Default Have no idea what 6.5 comps to get...

If you've been following some of my threads, you know I've been trying to find a decent set of comps that are not way expensive, are built well, and can work within the confines of the impreza door (I'll prolly get a spacer kit from IAperformance). I took some peoples' advice and went to actually listen to some speakers at Frys and Ultimate Electronics. I was kinda surprised. Between the two stores, I liked the Polk DB 6500 and the Infinity Kappa. I actually liked the Kappa better than the Perfect but was told that adjusting the xover settings would allow the perfects to sound like or better than the kappas. I also listned to the newer stuff from Alpine and Diamond Audio...liked the Infinitys better.

I am finding that I like a 'bright' sounding speaker set. A friend of mine has some older (~2 years) Alpine 5.25"s, and I liked the way those sounded...the new stuff is terrible. It sounds muffled. Was considering MBQuart...nix that one due to poor quality.

Some other stuff I have been considering but don't know how they sound or if they are built well are the Arc Audio 265's, and some from CDT Audio. I've also been considering a set of Focals but don't know if I can justify the price, nor do I know what they sound like.

all comps come with a passive crossover, which are factory settings that will dictate what frequency the speaker(s) play.... if you are looking to modify that then you are going to need an active crossover, at the very least.

My thought is unless you dont seem like you are doing something like this and getting really involved with your stereo, but instead you want something that sounds good...

I would go with a comp set that you like right out the box. The kappa's are nice, infact they probably are the best set that infinity makes.

Just to warn you...listening at the "big box" retail stores isn't very representative of the speakers' abilities. Most stores' setups(big and small) will be steered towards volume and bass reproduction only. So take that into account.

I'd try and hit up the independents. The guys there will probably give you a fairly honest review amongst the brands they carry and you might actually get to hear some of the product in a car.

Unless you have a really finely tuned ear, what you hear in the store will be decieving. If your trying to pick out the best speaker by hopping from store to store make sure you do a few things:

1. Bring your own CDs that you are very familiar with
2. Bring a cheap spl meter (I have one from my home theater days)
3. Have them turn off all tone controls & bypass all EQs
4. Have them turn off all auxiliary speakers including subs

Make sure you listen to the speakers at the same spl...as loud as you would like in your car. Have the salesman use the best amp they have in the store. Now listen for 10 minuetes. This should give you a decent idea how the speakers will sound in your car over a bit time. The salesman might get pissed your making so much noise for so long but it's your money.

Most people like "bright" speakers for the first 5 minuetes they listen to them. The highs really seem to pop. If the salesman is doing the "Push button A" - "Push button B" comparison the bright speaker almost always wins. You need to listen to 1 set for a while with music familar to you to get any idea if you really will like that speaker.

Is there a question here?

There's no such thing as making a horrible mistake and choosing the "wrong" comps. If you like the sound, the features, and the price, just go with it.

Remember that Installation and sound deadening are JUST as important as the drivers you choose. If the speakers aren't prepared and placed properly, even the most expensive sets can sound like poo.

Regarding the MBQuart...many people I talk to about the MBQuart have said they used to be good, but no longer. Apparently they were bought by one company (maybe rockford?) and used for their technology, then sold off to another company and they are basically just selling the name now.

Good call on that tang.

I haven't been into car audio in many, many years so I have no idea what's good or not anymore. I did like the way they sounded but I liked the eclipse speakers also.

This does not change my original point. "good" and "bad" speakers should be primarily judged by YOU, not what some shmo on NASIOC says.

I understand that you are just coming here for ideas, but it still seems you are in fear of making some sort of mistake...

This is an irrational fear, because your ears should come first.

I agree with Tang... dont always listen to what the majority of people say because people think differently...

On many audio forums people swear by the old RE XXX sub, so I decided to upgrade to it from 2 RE SE's.... well I perfer the other subs over my current XXX. But everyone thinks they were the ****.

On the otherhand I will probably go with an Alpine type R, because I was originally looking at them and once again everyone says they are good...

Got it. Just making sure it wasn't maybe a durability issues or short lifespan.

i'm wondering what components to use as far as fitting a tweeter behind the door panel.

i'd prefer everything as stock looking as possible.. and it seems that my a/d/s tweeters won't fit behind the door

Maxxsonics owns MB Quart now... they make hifonics amps. The current product line of P's and Q's and other speakers are still the same excellent quality MB Quart has been known for. The amps may have been a by-product of the short stint with rockford though.
