Oh yea, I got one of those too!

That sounds like a good number. My car has 155k miles and it's been driven hard; lots of rust. I'm not sure how well the old turbo is holding up. We will see!

Had it tuned and it did well on the dyno then started leaking oil. Has some old lines crack and leak. It's being worked on now. Hopefully will have the Baja back in the coming days and some dyno sheets for y'all.

The first run was immediately when I arrived at the shop after a 3 hour highway drive so it was plenty hot. I wanted to see exactly what it was putting down for power after a long drive and heavy use. They said a stock STi puts down about 275whp. So about 10% loss on the dyno sounds about right.

It's now tuned to hit a peak of 16.5 lbs of boost. IDC around 85% and slightly rich AFR. Conservatively tuned I was told and that's what I wanted. For the short time I drove it (began to leak oil from a cracked PCV line), it was surprisingly quick. If converted to bhp it's probably around 260hp/330tq (on the dyno it had water sprayed on the radiator and intercooler and an open downpipe, so likely less power on the street). Probably not quite as quick as a modern WRX but close enough. Now, I just need it to be reliable and not explode/leak

I'm going to keep it for now. I wasn't comfortable selling it for $10k.

Cheers,

Yea it just felt like more than $10k worth of car to me. It's very well sorted now. I know that if anyone wants a Baja Turbo, and buys one, they will need to put another $8k into it just to get it where mine is now.

As as typical car enthusiast, I'm always wanting new toys and projects. I'll be okay for now. I'm eyeing a new Ram 1500, Wrangler, or Bronco. I reckon it'll be a couple of years before I get serious about buying one of those and then I'll probably be ready to part with the Baja Turbo.

I'll probably end up asking the same price for it then. These things don't depreciate.

Until then it's STi truck shenanigans!

I wouldn't even sell my 198K N/A for 10K. Good plan to hold onto yours!

I think they're future collectibles. They might not be worth a lot but they will be ultra rare and special in 20 years.

Thanks Greg. I wanted to make a clean example of the Baja Turbo and I think I accomplished it nicely. The ones I've seen for sale online these days at dealers look nice but probably need $10k in engine and drive line repairs to get them where mine is.

Default Modding

Yea,
Since the Subaru Geneses designed the Baja Turbo in a Bastard form with it's tiny Turbo, and delicate Tranny, modding is way too expensive.
Thanks Subaru, You are a bunch of Jack-asses !!

From what I understand the Baja has a beefed up 5-speed transmission for heavy duty high-torque use. It's seemed fine to me. It has the same TD04 as the WRX. Mine's turned up a bunch and it's going well. I prefer quicker spool to big top end power anyways.

Default Spool

Yea, I like the quicker Spool of the TD-04 also. The torque is nice as well, I Just wish it flowed a little more air. I thought we shared the same tranny as the WRX?
And our ECU sucks too, gotta do a 2004 STI Wiring harness swap if I want to install a 6-speed. Thanx Subaru, you are a bunch of Jack-asses !!!

From what I understand it's a unique heavy-duty transmission built for light truck duty and high torque.

I see no reason to install a 6-speed transmission. You'd need to upgrade so many other components for it to potentially be worth it. I suppose I never planned on making it insane and am happy with a clean stage 1 build.

I would like to hope that the Baja tranny is stronger then the WRX, I'm not doubting u; but this is the first I've heard of it.

Long Live the Bratmobile

I heard the transmission is stronger, same as the one used in the Legacy GT.

But if you want an easy 6 speed swap, they sold some JDM imprezas with 6 speeds and no DCCD, just a normal 50/50 center diff. No wiring or controller needed. Just find the right axles and driveline and 3.90 rear diff. They go for about $2000 on ebay.

Thanks Bobjr,
I didn't know that. Gonna check on that ASAP. Greg.

Truck is for sale indefinitely but won't keep bumping it up. Great fun to drive. Just email me if interested.
