Default 2017 Imprezs Bluetooth will not pair

I've owned my 2017 Impreza for just over a year and over that time I have had to reconnect my Android Smartphone several times... that just causes the delay of stopping so I can set up pairing. Don't remember what steps, rather intuitive, then too sometimes I have to reload the phone directory. And, sometimes, just the phone directory is lost. But this time the unit will not pair at all.

When I go to the step of connecting a new/first phone my smartphone sees the Subaru BT on the BT search and displays the connect id number that the Subaru display also shows. I click connect to the Subaru BT and accept the connect on the Subaru screen, then both time-out without a pairing. I powered down my smartphone to get a "clean" boot and still the same problem. Do I need to "reboot" the Subaru or is such even possible? I can take it back to the dealer, the location is close but thought I'd ask here first.

Moved to the proper forum.
You have to follow the procedure in the owners manual and pair the phone through the voice commands from the steering wheel controls. Otherwise it wont' "stick" the next time the radio is powered on.

Consulting my manual I find what I had used many times is how one registers a new device. in the past I was successful if only temporarily. There is no mention of using the voice command, assume accessed by pressing the activation call on the steering wheel. When I first tried this the voice noted I don't have any voice activated device connected.. or similar. I have used this steering wheel switch over the year to activate the voice and I used the key words "call mom home" (for example) to place a call... of course assuming Sub hadn't yet forgotten my Phone book previously downloaded. In the absence of any voice devices Sub simply refused to "talk". In the manual I am told to register my phone, as I have tried and indeed observed the steps shown in the paper owner document. However a pairing (registration?) never takes place. Not to drag this thread down, Looking back again at the manual I see I should have used the "home" then "settings" to select "phone" I will try these steps next trip to the car when I also have time. I'll try this next, but post this to show the ongoing confusion on what had been easy to do in the past, what was done by the salesman when I took ownership of the car, and which was never permanent - had to be redone, often just the repeated download of Phonebook.

As noted, I think, I took the "factory reset" and now am having trouble setting the time. The + and - buttons are not active. Seems here too I have to go "home" "settings" etc, just to set the clock. The computer boys have just gone overboard in recent user interface design. I think the clock must have automatically reset for the daylight saving time ... but I do recall in the past I could adjust time simply by using the suggestively placed + and - buttons on the center clock display.

That voice pairing crap only applies to the old Clarion head units. You have the "new" Harman head.
Subaru TSB 15-211-17R for 2017 - 2018 Impreza, 18 Crosstrek.
Touch Home>Settings> scroll down, click System Information. If the software is not version REL12.17.43.20 take it to a Subaru dealer for an update.

Regarding setting time: When you did the factory reset it switched the clock to use GPS time. I forget exactly where the setting is, but it is in the head unit.

Thanks, there is no doubt the Sub has a problem, has forgotten how to BT to a smartphone, never mind it working for over a year. I know my smartphone is okay as my mobile On the Visor speakerphone works fine with it when driving. Yes, the factory default was the problem with setting time, don't know what GPS time is, but the factory default is "automatic" for time, this disables the manual push buttons next to the clock display. I changed to manual and set my clock, working fine now. I have a service due coming up and will discuss with the shop, I will check on your great advice on the software version. Maybe Sub will give me service credit if it is a factor fault they didn't call me in for. I had one recall, dealing with the review camera. Sub gave me a $150 service credit in their apology. I used over half of it for the first oil change, filter, tire rotate. Boy Sub is high cost on oil change, I get my 2016 Colorado V6 pickup done by the dealer for under $50. I had been changing my own oil for the last 60 years, but think I am about too old for continuing that and the truck is really big, not sure my ramps will hold it. The Impreza of course is not so big, still I like sitting in the waiting room better than doing the work myself. Old and lazy is my excuse.

Automatic setting is GPS time.
Even if you have had the older camera update done (WTN-71) there is a later one they should install. If you are in warranty there will be no charge, the second update was not a recall so you would not have been notified as you were with WTN-71.

Bass, thanks I have yet to check on the software version: REL12.17.43.20 as my Android smartphone also quit working with my Bluetooth speakerphone I use in my 2016 Colorado pickup. It had been working even after the 2017 Impreza lost any record of its past pairing with my Android LG phone. However, that too stopped working and checking the web I find we have another Android deficiency (I am sad Windows has given up on Smartphone software, that was the first phone I hooked up to my Impreza). I cleared the cash on the Android Bluetooth application and did a reset involving removing the battery when the smartphone was on... the hardest "soft reset" one can do. The phone now works with my speakerphone in my Colorado, but not yet in the Impreza. In the case of the BT speakerphone it just paired automatically when I got into the truck. On getting home this morning I did a BT pairing attempt in the Impreza and it failed, however result in my smartphone pairing found Subaru BT, but the Impreza did not recognize the phone. I'll get out to check the Impreza software version today sometime. I share this Android flaky behavior just FYI. Thanks.

Update, back from dealer and got the software update (under warranty) and set with tech to pair my 5.1.1 Android Smartphone (an LG Regel). I looked good at the start, both the car and the phone recognized each other and the car asked and accepted a download of the phone's directory. Then the car went into a "endless" (well waited only a few minutes) to "download" I think it was "handsfree ***8230;" something. That surely referred to the car not the phone. We tried several times with various failures. The tech then tried his Android phone, not an LG, and it paired easily. I assume it is my phone and I'll try again after a soft reboot and cache clearing of both Bluetooth application listings under "Apps in Settings" in my Android phone. Next I may try after reconnecting my old Windows Smartphone to a service provider the Windows phone. Both the Window phone and the Android phone have worked on my Impreza. I replaced my Windows phone a few months after purchase of the Impreza. At that point the Android phone worded as well as did the Windows phone. Welcome any and all suggestions.

For what it is worth, if anything. My Android 5.1.1 LG Rebel Smartphone continues to be problematic on my 2017 Impreza Bluetooth (Subaru BT). That is, it sometimes pairs and will even make a voice command telephone call... but soon fails to remember the contact list downloaded and sometimes forgets the paired Android phone. When first installed on my then new vehicle I was not required to re-pair or install every time I got in the car. Again, some times even now, the Subaru is unable to pair to my Android.

New, I activated a 4+ year old Windows Phone (8.0 it seems Windows is no longer in the smartphone business) Nokia Lumia 635. It pairs and works on the Impreza, so far at least. I have no idea what's going on but welcome any advice on using Android Smartphone in the 2017 Impreza. Perhaps a newer version of Android, say Marsh Mellow 6, works on the Subaru. I do not think it is possible to upgrade my Android to a newer OS version - another disadvantage, among many, of Android. Any experience out there on using Android in BT mode?

Just fyi, my android 5.1.1 smartphone began working again on my Impreza. I don't know why. I now also have an android 7 smartphone and it paired and works without any faults so far, about a month. Assume that says the problem is smartphone OS related, no reason to believe Subaru would want to invest in developing a fix for older android phones. Just a guess, not a complaint.
