Machine shop damaged main #5, decisions
I had the mains honed and this is how I got the block back
This is most likely the last time I am getting the block machined in this god forsaken country, but regardless, I need to figure out what to do now option 1 is use as is - as there is no burrs sticking out which would interfere with bearing seating, but I am concerned that oil will get in that "new passage" and will be pushing on the bearing option 2 is bore the mains to oversize and use king 0.005" oversize bearings, but not sure it would still clear that rip in the main, plus the only set of bearings in that size I have is the extra clearance, and still no word from king when they will release the standard size (backordered for a while, I have the info in my other thread)

How about option #3...have the shop buy you a good used case. Why should they not have to pay for their mistake?

We ought to look into sending you a machined block or get your own equipment from China. It's gotta be better than your piss bad luck with machine shops over there.

I'm just curious how it only happened on the one half, was it really THAT difficult to get the old bearing out??? It may be totally ok, but seeing that makes me question whether or not the clearance will be correct. Can you bolt the halves together to torque, then check the clearances and see if they are out of round?

for one, how do you know that wasn't already there?
Honing won't clean up something like that. but second, why are you that worried about it? Who cares if some oil flows into that passage. That minuscule pressure isn't going to distort the bearing out by any amount that will matter. |

I'm sorta with rtv900 on this. If the surface is not raised, most I would do is degrease the crap out of it, mix up some JBweld (or similar), wipe into the spot, squeegee with an old credit card to smooth, let set, finish the job. The JBweld will fill the gap, hot oil won't hurt it, keeps oil where it belongs, back of bearing keeps it in place. Just my thoughts. Would be different if that was the bearing surface like a cam bearing. |

I know it wasn't there, because when I was picking the shortblock out of several, I measured depth of each main on the block halves, I am very anal when it comes to this stuff hence my concern
I would rather not jb weld it though, so if its ok to run as is this is what I am going to do, appreciate the input |

Chips were still in the block when they honed it. A chip got into the notch and the hone stone drug it into the bore where it finally existed out into the oil groove.
I don't see an issue with it as long as everything is round and straight. I wouldn't jb weld that either, just leave it. |

I will have to hone it again, guess that will make sure its round and straight
its still super tight even with ACL HX bearings, only 0.0006" |

1-Oil pressure isn't going anywhere, that scratch is still contained within the oil channel behind the bearing. So long as there aren't any raised edges that affect bearing clearance, it's your call on whether or not it takes away any appreciable strength of that cradle.
2-Please don't put jbweld (or any other epoxy or filler) inside the oil system of your engine. 3-Please don't put jbweld (or any other epoxy or filler) inside the oil system of your engine. C'mon, Charlie, really? |

what about brazing or welding some aluminium into the area to fill in the gash, and then re-machining/re-honing afterwards?
Seems to be a common technique for repairing defects in engine blocks that have taken damage.. |

I left as is, the journal is straight and has no problem seating the bearing
