59 with a non running 2005 Legacy wagon. Needs brakes, a tail light and a power steering pump. Plus a good clean. As soon as the snow goes away, the work begins. Just getting the parts together now.

Not as awesome as you'd be inclined to think. Leaving aside the total engineering disaster (on my car even the second shortblock failed), it wasn't a very satisfying dynamic experience, even when it performed according to spec:

1. you could always feel the extra weight hanging onto the nose of the car. It wasn't understeering, but - how should I put it? - as if it couldn't be bothered to turn.
2. gearing ratios optimised for fuel economy meant that in urban traffic you would struggle to find the right gear when you were slowing down and picking up again, without coming to a full stop - as if there was a gear missing between 1st and 2nd.
3. it wasn't an engine you would call elastic - you could feel the torque coming at about 1800 rpm and dissapearing at about 1500 rpm more; it would rev to 3500 or even 4000 but there was no point in doing that because there was no pulling power to be gained by approaching redline.
4. short distance winter driving (my work commute) in the city was torturous for both engine (not enough time and revs to warm up properly) and driver (not enough heat in the cabin - thank God for the heated seats!). And I was among the fortunate owners of the Euro4 engine fitted to BL/BP Legacies, that came with a very forgiving DPF system - the Impreza's and Forester's got the Euro5 engine, with a DPF that was pretty much guaranteed to fail in city driving.

On the plus side, there was fun to be had in overtaking (with the right gear changes you could ride the torque wave) and fuel economy was very good.
