I just ordered mine, hasnt come yet..

Does anyone use the Torqued Performance Stage 1 map w/Cobb intake map and can attest to improvement or dissatisfaction?

Stock intake on the WRX/STI is actually better than most aftermarket CAI's & Ram Airs.
Subaru designed the stock intake for low intake air temperature & and low turbulence which leads to higher air density and more accurate MAF readings.

Remove the snorkle from the stock unit if you want more noise. If you want better flow install a $40 hi-flow filter and put the $$$ you saved towards a downpipe/up-pipe.

I don't get peoples fascination with intakes... Sure its relatively cheap and easy to do but the fact is... sucking hot air from the engine bay does little to no good for a turbocharged car.

In my experience: The main restrictions on power and responsiveness are the stock tune, stock downpipe, and stock up-pipe (in that order).

yeah stock is best and most tuners agree, aluminum will dissipate heat almost as fast as plastic but absorbs it more than plastic, the sf box is just a hot box once the box gets hot then your sucking in hot air. Lower IAT's are key

I've often thought about modifying the stock airbox by applying heat reflective material to it and weatherstripping/silicone caulking all air infiltration points.

Could take it step further by removing the snorkle in the fender and in its place add a duct running to the foglight... cut out the plastic fake mesh and add real mesh with an intake inlet behind for a stealth look.

The real problem for an air intake on a daily driver is sitting in traffic and/or stop and go situations. The IAT will skyrocket in these situations especially with most aftermarket intakes. If I was tracking the car or cruising at high speed IAT barely matters with so much ambient air blowing into the engine bay.

Alright so, I tried the Cobb Stage 1 map with SF intake, and then flashed to the Torqued Performance with Cobb SF intake map.. rode each for about 60 miles now and the TP map is much better - not as smooth as cobb map, but maybe thats just because the TP map has a higher boost target and more power. I didnt do before and after readings for any proof, so its all butt dyno based here.

Both felt faster than stock stage 1 93oct. map with stock intake. The sound is a nice addition too, its actually not even present until 3500 with a lot of gas.

I live in Maine, its cold most of the year so i didnt buy the airbox and probably wont bother considering I rarely drive far. When I do plan to drive more than an hour ill be cruising on the highway not racing anyway.

This is almost exaclty what I did and it helped ALOT. I have a stage 2 setup going and originally after the protune the engine bay was significantly hotter to the point where the engine at idle would sound like its struggling after driving around a bit (esp w/ AC on). I covered the airbox with gold heat barrier & since I don't have foglights I used extra grillkraft grill material I had to "customize" the fog light area to allow air in to the wheel well where the intake is. Personally I think it looks nicer than that fake plastic grill looking crap on there originally haha.

If high temperature is an issue you really should evaluate the root cause. I put a thermo tec turbo cover on, wrapped my dp, & the uppipe (need to do headers). I will say all of the above improvements have my car reliably doing track days, road trips, and daily driving with no issues what so ever from hot air overwhelming the airbox...

you can not put an intake on an STi an expect it to increase performance unless you tune the car for the intake. Hook up a cobb ap with stg1 map for that intake and I bet you will notice it works very well

Old thread....

Big difference between the feel of the Cobb OTS and TP's map after Mr. Mineheart's tweaking. Map for 93 octane and cobb sf.

If you are running stage 2 with a protuned. They should have suggested one-step colder spark plugs. That should solve your issue.

Also. Are you running the stock TMIC? They heat soak really easy.

I'd be curious to know how that works for you.

I had my car retuned with the complete stage 2 Cobb kit installed. Great gains from it. If you love a loud intake this is the way to go. I am actually thinking of going to a Perrin intake now with a FMIC, and a larger turbo.

Thanks for the heads up about the Cobb box.

Fill out your profile so people know what car you have first, then do some research.

Just recently installed the SF intake on my 2011 WRX, haven't noticed any change in IATs while driving or sitting still. Good idea about modifying the plastic mesh where the fog lights would go (mine is without), could probably get more air flow with that.

I made a 6 to 10 degree drop in intake air temps as compared to ambient, especially when boosting. I watch the temp drop like a rock to 1 or 2 degrees above what the outside temp reads! The scoop feeds all the air, the fenderwell is blocked off. Next I'm going to work on feeding the scoop better through the grill. Clear Gorilla Tape gets two thumbs up!

2 years later and a bit of refining and this is still working great (see post above). I've done some work with a utility knife and tape on the stock scoop thingy to smooth out the flow into the box and added more reflective heat shielding. I have opened up the hole into the fender well, I was having some issues where the engine would stall if I pushed in the clutch or took the car out of gear while coasting at about 45 mph or above, opening the fender up completely eliminated the issue. I've also sealed up the box better around the ABS stuff. The intake temps do rise sitting in traffic but that's probably to be expected with any setup. As for performance, at an autocross a couple of weeks ago I logged IAT going from 124F to 99F during a 28 second run on a short but fast course with ambient temps in the low 90's.

I'm running the Cobb intake without a tune. Tuner told me no problems, only thing he said was keep an eye on AFR. What values are high and low. In short, what is safe

Cobb SF was fun at first. Lots of whooshing noises. But I'm so tired of it. And like everyone says, there's no real performance gain. Back with the OEM box I could actually hear the whine of the turbo during a quick acceleration. Now it just sounds like a vacuum in my engine bay. Probably selling the car soon, so I'm returning to stock. Too bad I threw out the OEM box. Should have saved it. I had to piece one together from eBay parts. Still should net a profit after I sell the Cobb SF and Access Port on classifieds.

I actually felt like the car performance was worse than the stock tune.

I'm useing maperformance stage 2 tune, atm. Alot better, but I'll get a custom tune. By spring.
