Calling all Legacy guys! There's now another choice of bolt on exhaust's for us!
Here's a link
http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/Foru...ML/002067.html For the '95-up Legacys styles availible are single 4", dual 3" & 3.5" as well as dual DTM style. These are FULL T-304 Stainless Steel Cat-back exhaust systems. If you have a Legacy that doesn't have a rear valance (ie. L) then the dual tips will work for you. Dual tips will also work for the '00-up Legacys [This message has been edited by GTBGUY (edited March 17, 2001).]

Bolt-on rear sections will be offered later, but if you think about it, the cat-back is only a little more expensive than a bolt on rear section in stainless steel from stromung! Plus, your stock exhaust pipes aren't stainless steel.

Speaking of cat-back exhaust systesm, does any1 here have the Borla Stainless steel cat-back exhaust??? I'm planning on getting one from SPO! I have a 95 sedan, and the one the SPO offers is for Wagon only. So, the exhast still fits fine, but the tip sticks out about 3 inches. So, i'm planning on getting it installed and then take it to Midas and have them cut the tip 3 inches.
Has any1 else installed the Borla on a sedan (other than a GT)? |

Well, FYI, the Borla systems are only 2" ID, and would only be marginally larger in diameter compared to the stock exhaust. Why not get a perfect fitting catback for your car? If you cut the tips to shorten it, you'll have an area prone to rust. And since you have a L sedan, I believe you don't have a rear valence, hence you can go with either the single 4", dual 3"/3.5" or dual DTM style tips. Definately alot more choices in comparison to the Borla unit.

I was just reading the latest issue of Super Street. An ad from www.stylincompacts.com lists mufflers from Brullen Racing from $89.00. Why not offer these with the correct hangers from the Legs without having to have them welded on at a muffler shop. To me $90-100 seems alot more affordable than a complete cat-back for $400+

Well, most often, people change out their exhaust systems for either one of the following reasons :
1) Rust/and or Damage 2) For Performance 3) For looks. Going with a full stainless steel cat-back allows for performance as well as durablility. I think what you were suggesting is a "bolt-on" rear section. This is a feasible idea, but doesn't make much sense, since if you're replacing your exhuast b/c of damage/rust, then it makes sense to do the whole thing. Doing just a bolt-on rear section only provides marginal improvements. As well the Brullen mufflers that will be used for our Subarus are especially made, not the same "universal" mufflers that they sell. |

Thanks for the advice GTBGUY! The reason why I wanted to get Borla is because is stainless steel, its a cat-back system, its life-time warranteed by Borla, and it would give me better performance. The main reason is because I already have the Borla stainless steel header, the pullet and the intake, so now with the cat-back exhaust the system will be complete. SPO was saying that I can take the exhaust to MIDAS and have them cut the muffler 3" and then weld it. So, SPO was saying that this way I won't loose anything and there won't be any place where the exhause can rust!
I don't want to get just a muffler! I want performance, not just sound and look. I can definatelly tell the difference since I put the pulley, intake and header, and I know if i add a cat-back exhaust i'll set(for now )! I'm also planning on getting the back bumper lip and the front bumper lip(like the one the 2.5 GT have, its $50 at the dealer). So, the Borla cat-back shouldn't be a problem. I'm open to any suggestions. I just want to get an exhaust that is gonna make a performance difference! I think JC Sports is offering a cat-back exhaust, but its a more expensive!! |

Kucheto,
Personally, I would say that the Borla is perfectly fine for your car. A 2" exhaust is plenty for the 2.2L (there are some that would argue that a 2" exhaust is plenty even for the 2.5L). If I were you I'd get the Borla exhaust, and maybe when you have your local exhaust shop trim it 3", you could also have them make you a 2" diameter stainless steel midpipe with a resonator. Shouldn't be too expensive at all. I just think the smaller diameter is better suited to your smaller displacement, lower output engine. Pat Olsen '97 Legacy 2.5GT sedan |

Hi All,
Brullen now has a template for all Y2K Legacy GT's and above. He used my car as a template and now has various mufflers with hangers ready to bolt on. We are experimenting with various setups. My Y2K GT has 2.25" cat back exhaust with 14" resonator and Dual tip muffler. The sound is awsome and deep. But in my line of work I kinda need a little more stealth, we are going to try adding another resonator to the assy (just like stock). Resonators do not detract from performance at all, they are straight through construction the same diameter as the id of the tubing. Soon he will have various offerings as to tonal quality as well as how quiet or loud you want your system. Just an FYI... |

Patrick - Actually running the 2.25" w/ a 2.2L is quite normal. On my Accord EXR (2.2L SOHC VTEC) I run a 2.25" ID and it's perfect! I tried the 2" and it didn't really flow enough. As well, I have 2.25" on my '98 Legacy L and it's totally fine (I bolted up my '99 Legacy GT's 2.5" exhaust one day, and that made a difference (less bottom end, but more top).
If you're going to go turbo down the road get the 2.5", other wise get a 2.25" and you'll have space to grow if you're staying N/A. |

Thanks for the advice every1. I think I'm gonna go with a cat-back 2.25" stainless steel exhaust! I'll have to check and see where do I want to get it from!
Thanks again! |

I've heard very good things about Brullen!! I live in Oregon, so I guess I have to call them and customer order it, otherwise the only Brullen dealer in Oregon is in Seaside, Seaside Muffler & Radiator. That's 2 hours from Portland. I may actually go there on the weekend and talk to them in person!

Kucheto - just wanted to tell you, that these exhaust systems manufactured by Brullen are exclusively done for JC Sports and TRi Tuning. So you won't be able to get them from any other dealer. If you want first dibs, I can get you hooked up... otherwise if you try to get it from either Brullen or a local Brullen dealer, it's going to cost you at least $600USD, and that's only if they will sell it.

Weren't other people also saying you can get a Stainless Magnaflow (Rallispec uses these) for less than $100 as well? Get it put on at a muffler shop w/ resonater, total should be less than $300, I would think. Magnaflow makes some pretty good stainless stuff.
