Toyota to introduce new, bigger hybrid cars (hybrid midsize sedan as early as 2008)

New hybrid system smaller and lower-priced

TOKYO -- Toyota Motor Corp., the world's leader in hybrid cars, plans to introduce a new hybrid-only model in 2009.

The model will be a midsize sedan with a 2.5- to 3-liter-engine, larger than that of the 1.5-liter Prius hatchback, Toyota's first hybrid, Japan's Asahi Shumbun reported Wednesday.

The new model is intended to serve U.S. car buyers, who like hybrids and prefer bigger engines.

Toyota is considering other hybrid-only models, such as a station wagon and a minivan, to spur sales of hybrid vehicles, the newspaper said.

The automaker is developing a new hybrid system that will be smaller and lower-priced than the current system. It will be installed on the Prius and the new hybrid midsize sedan as early as 2008.

The Prius, introduced in 1997 as the world's first hybrid-only model, is to be fully redesigned when it incorporates the new hybrid system, the newspaper said.

Glad to see them moving along. I think a hybrid car is definitely in my future in a few years.

so let me get this straight... they are reducing the size and capability of the current system, sticking it on larger engines, and placing them in larger cars? Doesn't the Honda Accord Hybrid not sell well? Why are they leaving the segment they rule solely?

I see this as being a nod to the future of Hybrids. With tax incentives going away, the economical edge the gas savings brings is lost to initial purchase price. Also, they are starting to get some bad press in thier eco-friendliness due to construction costs and recycling cost as far as energy use overall. A simpler system could be seen as more of a centralizing an electrical system and providing some power advantages.

What would be the differense between this "mid-size" sedan and the Toyota Camry Hybrid?

They also made the same engine combo in the Hybrid Highlander, not to mention the Lexus models with even bigger gas engines.

I am confizzled. The Prius already has almost the same interior space as the mid-sized Camry, and they already do have the Camry hybrid. Seems that they have that segment all wrapped up actually.

Or is Toyota gonna move the Camry into an even larger size in it's next redesign, and wedge in another smaller mid-size car in between it and the Corolla? Not unlike how Ford has the Focus, Fusion, 500 and Crown Vic - So then it would be Corolla, _____, Camry, Avalon??

 too soon to tell.

It is a little confusing since depending on who you talk to, the Prius is technically a midsize, but it's on the smaller end of things. But the Camry is not a hybrid-only car. It's not a purpose-built hybrid like the current gen Prius is. So it will never be as efficient as a car built from the ground-up to be a hybrid could be. So... I think this is just a nice sign that Toyota's not going to shoe-horn a hybrid drivetrain into every model in their lineup, and that's a good thing. The Prius is still the best real-world performer from a pure MPG standpoint, and considering that the 2009 Prius is rumored to be more in the neighborhood of 90MPG it would be great to see a bigger, more luxurious hybrid-only that still gets around 50MPG.
