Default 09 WRX Power Steering Leak. Anybody else?

It's under warranty and they're fixing it. It's leaking at the valve where the shaft goes down into the rack and pinion. When I was at the dealership they had an STi up on the rack replacing the steering rack. Just curious if this is/has been a problem for others.

Nothing but the SPT exhaust that the dealership put on when I bought it.

The rack has been replaced under warranty. It feels pretty good. Now to wait for the next problem to pop up...

Old post but I can't really find anything current. My rack just started leaking where the shaft goes in. 66,000 miles. Hopefully they won't deny my warranty (gold package) considering my swaybars, coilovers, etc.

Reviving an old thread as well.
Just turned 50K and my steering rack is leaking like a bitch. Same place as mentioned above...where the two lines come into the rack by the valve. 09 WRX with Whiteline Steering rack bushings
I was told my warranty will not cover it (steering rack isnt considered part of the powertrain warranty). How difficult is it to install a new rack and get the fluid bled?

bumping for this^ how much did it cost to fix? I know this isn't covered under power train.

Well, I contacted my dealer this morning and told them about the leak and where it's coming from. They told me they have to take a look to be certain, so I have to take the car in. They either service the rack or replace it, depending on the severity of the issue, and it's about a 2-3 day wait. I have a 2008 WRX with 22K miles, bought new in 2010. I know it's basically my fault since my neighborhood exit is right next to my garage, so I always tilt full and exit my house in a U turn. I found the leak by cleaning the whole rack with liquid mechanic, and driving it for 2 days to check for leaks. Everything was clean after that, but I went under the car and moved the shaft dust boot a little and oil started coming out.

I told the dealer about having lowering springs and sway bars, and they told me that suspension warranty is lost, but the steering rack is a completely different system and not related to suspension in terms of warranty. What I forgot to mention was wheels. Although they're 17x8, they sit on 235/45, so I don't know what they'll say about that... I'll update when I'm carless, bored out of my mind, with nothing else to do but browse the web...

Powertrain is engine and transmission... that's it.

There are plenty of guides to replace the rack. I know because I was planning on doing it myself until I decided to call the dealer. My recommendation... be sure about everything you'll need, check the OEM catalog from subarugenuineparts.com, and get some help. Also, check ebay item 170969343419... Full rack with joints, and only driven for 5K miles.

Well... Went to the dealer... They "re-sealed" the rack, and told me that it would need replcement if it happens a second time... Not because anything was wrong, but because it was policy. Everything seems fine now, so we'll see...

67k miles, several track days, and absolutely no maintenance on the power steering. No leaks.

Bump- third rack and lines just went in at 75K. Pathetic engineering. While SOA helped out with a few hundred bucks off its time to sell a lemon.

If I do decide to replace it with another STI I'll be forced to pay for the longest warranty.

my 2010 wrx started leaking at only 28k miles...My local dealership would no replace it under my factory or extended warranty due to my coilovers. They tried to hit me with a $1200 bill...after much fighting and hassling i just traded the car in. I was tired of dealing with them and was just pissed bout the whole situation, they kinda killed my love for that car...

Hey man get a o ring kit and replace the o ring that is on top of you PWR steering pump, i dont know what its called but there is a line that goes to the top of the pump if you replace the o ring i bet it will solve your whine problems. I have done it to my car, i was so close to buying a $500 power steering pump(only way to get the o rings for my year model, but i ended up usuing a o ring kit from advanced). But a 40 cent o ring fixed my problem and about 4 or 5 other WRX and STI's in our shop. With a Power steering whine.

2010 wrx started noticing my PS fluid disappearing at about 55k. Its a very slow leak and I think I'v pinned it down to turning the wheel to full lock
I'v been careful not to take turns at full lock for awhile now and haven't noticed any fluid loss. I really need to fix that **** though

My 08 wrx started leaking from the pinion valve at about 80k.

If this happens, just replace the entire rack, don't do what I did and just swap out the pinion valve, more trouble than what it is worth.

This appears to be a common theme, mine started to leak at around 48K miles, a bit annoying seeing this is very low miles IMHO. Ended up having the dealership fix it, did not replace the rack, they pulled it, fixed a $15 seal, threw it back and charged me about $400. I was happy with the dealer, they are great, but called Subaru and complained whined to them for a bit. I don't mistreat the car.

Steering components are clearly substandard in these cars or defective. I've never had a pump or rack go out in any car even 200K mile beaters. Hope the 2015s get an upgrade...
