![]() Best concert I ever saw was The Roots at the House Of Blues. Simply amazing, even more so when you consider they play all their own instruments....and play well.
I miss A Tribe Called Quest. Wish they hadn't broken up. I do like Dilated and Blackalicious though.... Grant |

![]() I always visit this site, but never post. But
since the subject is hip hop, dayum, glad to see other socal subie owners who appreciate the real stuff. I saw the Roots at the House of Blues in Anaheim a couple months ago and it was awesome. Although Black Thought is not my favorite emcee, he can rock a crowd. I think the group that puts on the best show is Jurassic 5. Saw them twice (Glass House in Pomona and HOB Anaheim). I went to the Dr. Dre Chronic 2001 tour, and I was bored out of my mind. Hip Hop was not made for a large venue, and that music is better left for the dance floor. Here's an idea, how bout a subie meet at Project Blowed? ![]() Right now, I'm tripping off of Aesop Rock's Labor album. Very good stuff. YoungWilliams: you like Tribe? I'll go out on a limb. Low End Theory, the best Hip Hop album. Ever. |

![]() Kooya-You caught Jurassic 5? Well, color me insanely jealous!!!
![]() As for The Roots, their encore was great...I loved when Hub went off. I'm not sure if it was actually music, but it was damn impressive. And the guitarist (can't remember his name) busting out some Ozzy was just perfect... Tribe may get back together? Nice.... And kooya, you may just be right on Low End Theory... Cheers, Grant |

![]() Low End Theory? Nah i'd have to say Midnight Marauders myself, then Illmatic and Low End in a close third. See you all at Coachella and Audiotistic.

![]() Numerik, you'd put midnight marauders and illmatic ahead of low end theory? i ain't mad atcha! very good albums. i'll try some other categories, see what ya'll think:
Best Hip Hop compilation ever: Soundbombing 2. Most Lyrically Gifted emcee: Mos Def (Check out his verse on "thieves in the night" off of the black star album) To everybody going to audiotistic: :monkey: (I can't go) |

![]() Best compilation, that is a hard one. But its betwen Sound Bombing 2 (sound bombin 3 sucked) and Lyricisits Lounge.
And the most gifted mc, Mos Def is up there but not the most gifted, i'd say KRS-One and in a close second i'd go with Nas, he maybe mainstream but his older stuff is still classic. Now how about best Hip-Hop group, and best Stage show. Best Hip-Hop group ill say its a 3-way tie between The Roots, J5, ATCQ. Black Star, Dialated, are in second. Best show, no doubt about it The Roots. FYI I do some promotions for a lot of the venues in So Cal, used to work part time at Phat Beats so its helps to know people in the biz. |

![]() This would have been a good i-Club Hip Hop meet:
![]() heheheheheheeeeeeeeeee ![]() Kooyaa, its nice to see you come out from the shadows. I had thought every other i-Clubber was just into Trance, KROQ, and all that other stuff. I like that too, but its hard to run into true heads on this board. So far the only two I knew were Subie Newbie and maybe Codemunky. ;p You guys mentioned some great MC's: Chali 2na, Mos Def, Nas (Illmatic era)...very well skilled.....and even nicer when paired up with DJ Premier, one of my all-time favorite artists. This is the only guy that can save Canibus from falling off completely IMO. Numerik, never seen you post either. I haven't been to Fat Beats since I bought my Jedi Mind Tricks tix. I've got to see whats up there, they're still on Melrose? I hope we can get a meet at an upcoming event we can all attend. Audiotistic is kind of expensive and might be oversold, so I'll check out other options. Late. -OLMEK ![]() |

![]() You guys are pretty well versed in you Hip Hop. Haven't had time to keep up with the underground scene, so I don't know too much about the newer emcees and groups. I would consider myself a novice re: knowledge of the genre, but I do know what I like: lyricism. Can't beat Mos Def, KRS-1 (although I haven't peeped his "religious" album yet--I'm a little skeptical) Dilated (I am one of the few that thinks Evidence is more gifted lyrically than Rakaa) Nas (his automatic guns at nuns verse in back to the grill still trips me out), El-P and the other Quannum peeps. And I ain't hating on the mainstream emcees that are skilled in the art; though those are few and far between--eminiem comes to mind.
I too come from a filipino family of hip hop heads . . . I used to D.J. but then again, what filipino kid from cerritos did not belong to a D. J. crew at one time or another. In fact, if you are a filipino male and from cerritos, I know two things about you: you have a pair of 1200's stowed away somewhere, and you drive or used to drive a lowered honda/acura. ![]() ![]() Yeah, I hope to meet other SCIC Hip Hop heads at upcoming meets, but I just don't have the time to make it out them right now. I can't even make it to the Rim becuase I have finals on Fri. and Sat. of that week ![]() D.J. ![]() Soundbombing 2 is probably the best complilation album ive heard. I can listen to it from start to finish. i used to laugh when ever i heard eminem on "any man" "ill smash into your Honda Accord with a 4 door Ford", haha and "America(?)"(i forgot who was on this, its been a while since i listened to the album) "my favorite flavor of gas is mustard, im f**king a blond hermaphrodite...(yea, you know how it goes haha). Ive havent been up to date with the underground lately, i didnt even know soundbombing 3 came out Mos Def/Talib Kweli/Hi Tek is a good combo too. The Black on both sides was the 1st and only album i "bumped" when i got my drivers license a few years back. As for the Roots, ive been a fan of them since i 1st heard "what they do" and i still have their "things fall apart" album in the CD changer. |

But I have a copy of Lyricist Lounge: Underground Airplay and I am not too impressed. Though there's an awesome battle cut between Masta Ace and Boogie Man. |

![]() Good thing you never heard about SB3. It was really commercial, Nate Dogg was on it, along with some other guys who are not underground and i found that album everywhere, even at my local k-mart and target.

![]() Just thought I'd bump this up top for all you SCIC hip-hoppers....
I'm reading this book right now I think you all'd probably enjoy. It's called "Bomb the Suburbs." It's really interesting, talks about the origin of hip-hop, coming from the break-dancing, b-boy, graffiti crowd. Basically says how Dre and all that gangster rap ish ruined rap as an art form and a political force. He also rants about how the suburbs are evil. Makes a pretty good argument for it too.... Oh yeah, the author is William Upski Wimsatt. Check it out. I think you'll like it. It's a good bathroom read.... Cheers, Grant |

![]() So I guess this is now the official SCIC Hip Hop thread. (I hope it doesn't get bumped to OT!) I will definitely check out that book. Thanks for the tip Grant.
I would have to partially disagree with the statement that Dre is ruining hip hop. There is plenty of good hip hop out there, but it's not being played on the radio. There is music out there that resembles hip hop (Ludacris, P.Ditty, Nelly) but it is meant for a different audience. Most people aren't looking for artistry or political statements in their music. True hip hop heads will always covet the real ish, on cassette and on wax. And I like freaking girls to the mainstream stuff at clubs. Oh, and to keep this on the SCIC tip, I heard Blackalicious is performing tomorrow. Anyone going? I wish I could, but I'm in the middle of finals. MTV2 is totally blowing Blackalicious up, there's a commercial for the album and everything. What's up with that? Thanks for the suggestion. I'm always down to read some perspectives of our Hip Hop Culture. So far, the best two books I've read on the subject had to be Chuck D's "Fight The Power: Rap, Race, and Reality", and the "Droppin' Science" collection of essays. As for Aesop, its funny that someone mentioned him, because I'm going to the Fantastic Damage Tour event at the El Rey Theatre on the 22nd. I might also be at the Glass House tonight for Blackalicious, but I was wondering if I should just save it for De La Soul's arrival. ![]() Later! -OLMEK |
