Fuel smell in cabin......

Whenever its really cold I get a fuel smell inside my car and it doesn't go away. I am pretty sure it is the problem that was reported on early WRXs a long time ago. I should have gotten it fixed then. I went to the dealership last year and they quoted me $600 to replace the fuel line. I thought that that was rediculous for just a little hose. So because I'm not an expert at all about my car I thought I'd ask you guys what my options are. I remember that they used to sell the hose but I can't find one for the life of me. I can't find fuel lines anywhere online, all I can find is fuel rail kits. Will that help to solve the problem and replace the faulty fuel hose? Thanks for the help!

Since the repair requires the removal of the intake manifold, you won't be doing it yourself.

a fuel rail kit will fix this problem. However, installing fuel rails means removing the existing rails and piping which means removing the intake manifold.

All Subaru actually does is shorten one fuel line by 30mm and lengthen a hose by 30mm.

what are the chances of this getting repaired at no cost? Ibought my 02 in March, and just last week started getting the smell. I emailed Subaru and asked how to go about gettig it fixed, and this is what they replied:

"Thank you for contacting the Customer/Dealer Services Department of Subaru of America, Inc. We regret the circumstances that prompted you to contact us.

In order for this concern to be properly reviewed, an Authorized Subaru dealership needs to inspect your vehicle. Once they have a chance to diagnose the issue, they then can verify whether or not it matches the bulletin that pertains to the fuel smell concern. If they determine that it does relate, then they can review to see if any financial assistance can be provided for the repair."

I read this as "go to the dealer, and if they want to fix it for free they will" ,which doesnt bode well for me.

Are there any tips out there for dealig with this in such a way that the repair is covered?

Dealers suck, if the warranty is expired( yours is 2002 so it would be) then you're probably screwed.
