Yes the mic works. I tested it through AA and made a call. AA responded to my commands and the person on the other end of the call could hear me. Dimmer works. GPS is working. HD radio looks like its working and picking up a signal, just no sound. How else can i test the aux in with the audio being an issue right now?

Exactly this, the TYTO-02 I imagine would be designed to take in actual audio signals from an aftermarket HU and translate that to the data signals that the HK AMP needs. The 2019 NAV radio is already sending data signals out so I'm not sure the TYTO-02 would be getting the input it expects.

I've said it a couple times but I would test all of them at the AMP end. Plug the 2018 radio in, take and note readings. Plug the 2019 radio in, do the same and then compare results. You might get lucky and figure out what wire isn't be sent the same way to the amp.

Looking at the 2019 amp I stand corrected, it is certainly different which is very odd that Subaru would change this drastically between the 2018 & 2019 model years. It looks like your next step would be to try building an adapter harness / splice between your 2018's wires and the 2019 amp assuming you can't find a complete 2019 radio harness from a donor. I have to say, at that point though, unless you REALLY want to maintain the factory MAP button functionality, it might be easier to grab a 2019 PHONE button radio seen here with the carplay, and bypass the amp all together. I assume your desire for Android Auto is to use Google Maps / Waze anyhow.

I grabbed the Amp pinout sections from both the 2019 WRX FSM and the 2018 WRX FSM . At a glance I see three extra wires on the 2018 but it looks like it's only used for Shield Ground & Vehicle Speed Sensor. The third addl wire on the 2018 (A1 B/W) seems to come directly from the radio yet on the AMP Pinout it says Pin 1 on Connector A is Not Used. However, if you follow this to the radio side it's Pin 16 on Connector C which is "N.C./MUTE*1". So looks like it possibly controls MUTE.

I don't know if you took my earlier suggestion but taking a multimeter to the harness would tell you a lot. You could determine if in fact the amp is receiving power and perhaps even monitor if data is being sent. Take some readings hooked up to the 2018 radio, then take some hooked up to the 2019 and try to look for any differences.

If you ever get tired of all this and chose to sell the radio please let us know before throwing it on ebay. I as well as some other members in here would probably appreciate the ability to take a wack at it themselves.

It is true the HK unit talks to the amp in a specific way. But if I have read the pinout correctly the 10-pin connector has front left and right signals that may be the same as the non-HK unit (not sure). Once I get the TYTO I will experiment with my 2016 HK headunit and report back.

This is the official 2018 FSM from Subaru. If it's not in that PDF then it probably means subaru didn't provide that information in the manual. If you think pages were cut from it by the original uploader then $35 gets you 3-day access to TechNet where you can download a fresh copy of the manual.

I finally got my hands on a 2019 headunit so I will start playing around with it. The first thing I noticed was that it would not let me update the firmware over the air. Does anyone have access to the USB files to do it?

Which one did you grab and where did you have luck sourcing it?

I bought the non-HK as that is the only thing I can find. I am going to try to figure out a way to mate it with my amp (or bypass it).

I am pretty sure Technet is just service literature and doesn't have firmware files. Per the service bulletin they are on subarunet.com but as of a few years ago those files are no longer public.

Unfortunately, whoever owned this salvaged car never updated the firmware from the initial release so it is really laggy which I think is better with recent updates.

I signed up for technet a year ago and was able to get the update files for my 2016. It took a little digging but they are there

I was able to connect to my WiFi and updated the HU successfully.

Interesting! I got a message that said "software download failed". The service bulletin made mention of VIN/serial number mismatch being a problem. I wonder if it is a US/Canada thing. Anybody else try to update firmware over the air? Thanks.

Okay, so I had some time to play around with everything over the weekend, and I think I figured out a way to make this all work for those with HK/Nav.

The Axxess TYTO-2 DOES work with the HK amp in my limited testing so far. It is able to take a 4 channels and convert that into two channels pre-amp plus the proper balance and fade signals to communicate with the HK amp (2016-2018).

My next step is to take a non-HK OEM headunit (which outputs 4 channels) and splice a custom harness to allow it to work in 2016-2018 subies with HK amps. The challenge is that the 28 pin connector has leads that the headunit needs (reverse, SW controls, mic) and leads the amp needs (amp communication). So I have been working with Brian at AutoHarnessHouse.com (who is awesome) to make a custom harness for me. It will take a few weeks to get everything I need, but I will let the group know if it works and will include detailed instructions.

The upside of using a non-hk radio is they are MUCH easier to find. I spent months looking for an HK headunit and came up with nothing. Non-HKs are all over the place. The down side is you will lose OEM nav. But with carplay, I don't really care. The other downside is added cost of the TYTO and the harness. But this is offset by a cheaper headunit.

I will keep everyone up to date on the progress.

Just wanted to note that CarPlay works perfectly fine on the 2020 Forester Limited I got with the standard 8" (?) HU last weekend. I've yet to take my 2019 WRX Limited in to get the HK HU replaced or something. Still drops out after 5-10min of use.

I'm kind of suspecting it's the USB jack in the center console to be the culprit..not enough resolution or something. will look into it one of these days.

Do you know what firmware version you are running on the WRX? You can check by going to settings and then system information towards the bottom.

I lose USB daily. It comes back, but it drops way more than I would like it to. Don't worry though, the dealership cannot replicate my problem. Trust me, I've tried. As soon as iDatalink comes out with a solution for the 2019 HK system, the radio comes out!

You and me both. I’m still waiting for iDatalink to come out with a solution for the 2018 HK amp. Last one they have is for a 2017 to keep the HK amp. 2018+ no joy. It’s a little surprising since the 2018s have been around for a while now. But hey, if you want to sell your 2019 NAV+HK head unit let me know

The 2017 and 2018 HK hardware is identical. Most likely the RR firmware for 2017 will work with a 2018. It won't work with a 2019-20, but the 2018 should work.

My bad, that was a typo. I have a 2019 Limited with the HK system.

I'm fairly certain I am on the latest firmware, but this has been an issue since I purchased the car a year ago. I'm thinking the wire going to the console usb is pinched somewhere by the way it is acting.

It matter not if it is a Samsung USB drive loaded with music, an iPhone, or a Galaxy. I just lose USB randomly. Going further, it doesn't matter if I am driving, or sitting still. I keep threatening to set up a Go Pro to capture it so I can show evidence to the dealership, but I'd rather just scrap the HK system all together.

On my stock 2019 base head unit i randomly have to unplug and plug my phone back in to get Android auto to work. I usually start up my car and plug the phone in or even wait to get to the corner before plugging in initially. The phone charges but doesn't go into Android Auto mode when this occurs, like it's not recognizing the software maybe? Maybe there's a newer version software but i haven't looked into it yet, included mine in case it helps anyone else.

That is the launch firmware for that headunit. The newest is Rel_UA.19.36.70. Try updating it and see if that helps. Not sure if that headunit has wifi, but if so, you can do it over the air if you get a good wifi signal in your garage.

If you don't have wifi then it does have to be updated via USB. I think technically the dealer is suppose to do it. It is silly, because the maps on the nav unit can be updated by the user via USB, but not the firmware. Not sure if the dealer charges for it or not.

I did it myself with my salvaged headunit using the service bulletin and the firmware file from a forum user. It worked fine for me. If you do do it, make sure the engine is running (not in a closed space) because if the power fails during the update it could a big problem. Note that the firmware does check to make sure the USB contains the correct firmware before it uploads it. That made me feel better about it. I personally think this is pretty safe to do yourself, but anyone who tries is doing so at their own risk.
