Default Do I have to change my brake pads to get rid of this brake squeak?

Hey Everyone,

I got the brake pads on my Impreza changed late last year. With the old (stock) pad the brakes would squeak for the first few stops and after that everything would be fine, with the new pads installed however the brakes squeak constantly (when i press them). I took the car back to the guy that changed the pads and he said nothing was wrong with the pads and that the brake discs needed to be resurfaced, this sounded weird to me because brake squeak was minimal with the old pads. Anyway, I got the brake discs resurfaced and the squeaks did go away for about a day, after that they returned and seem to have gotten worse as time has passed. Was my earlier assumption that the pads were the source of the squeak correct? I'm guessing that the guy used cheap pads, do I have to change the pads to reduce/eliminate the brake squeak or could something else be causing the squeaks?

Thanks for any help.

He may have used cheap pads and/or did not install the pad shims/silencers. I only use factory brake pads on all of my cars. I have also re-done many 'professional' brake jobs for friends who have experienced the dreaded squealing from cheap pads. If you live near north central CT, just buy the Subaru pads & hardware and stop by. I will change them for a small beverage donation.

I wish i did, i'm no where near there.

So get the stock pads and make sure the pad shims/silencers are installed.

Thanks.

apply some anti-squeal greese to the back of the pads. it's a common issue with a simple solution.

If you get new pads, they should be greased. If you stick with the old pads that are squeaking, then grease those too. Although, cheaper (semi-metallic) brake pads will tend to squeak intermittently because of their properties. Ceramic pads tend to eliminate the squeaking due to cheaper pads and tend to create less dust. Nothing to worry about though, just turn the radio up

the squealling is actually the pad rocking back in forth, like a bell, hitting the disc, very fast, high frequency. the goo applied to the back of the pad keeps it from resonating. if your old pads are worn out, then buy new ones (??) ...

If you buy new factory pads, buy the hardware kit that includes the silencer shims. Do not grease them. They were not greased from the factory.

question for the specialists or those that have had similar experiences....

just installed ebc redstuff. all around good pressure from all corners. fronts are silent no issues. my rears have a low resonation almost 'drooning' sound when my brakes are very lightly pressed and the pads are just grazing the rotors.

i was pretty anal when installing not to get grease or crap on the pads. screamer bits were installed too. checked since, nothing is loose, good fluid level...

any suggestions. i'm going to install my new suspension on friday, so while i have all the wheels off i'm going to re-check. just wondering if there's something specific i could look for and have in my mind before starting to pinpoint it more accurately. someone suggested cleaner and a bit of brake grease, not sure i want to grease right away. will clean though.

thanks!
