Porsche 914-6
I'm getting interested in Porsche 914-6s after browsing through a book about them at the bookstore. At first, the the 914-6 seemed like a relatively inexpensive and fun car, but my searching on the web in the last half hour has not backed that up! Do any of you have any experience of info to share? Good web resources, classsified to check, warnings, etc.? Any discussion would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

you might try searching for them by the name "916"
most of the 914's with 6cyl engines i've heard of were called 916's so you might find a lot more that way. |

I good condition 914-6 is a relativley rare and collectable car. I think a decent one will run quite a few bucks. Also, watch out for rust, early porshes love to rust!!! That said, they are great cars have never driven a 914 but would love to. My personal pride and joy is my 930

914-6 was made for only 2, maybe three years within the production run of 914's (i think 70-72). theres no "offical" moniker 916, they are fairly rare in good shape. your best bet, if you wish to pursue this is to buy a later model 914-4 and swap in a same year 911-e motor (which is essentially all a 914-6 is) the cool thing is that mechanical parts are cheap the later model 914's use mostly VW fox suspension parts, as in the everywhere but the US they were sold as VW 914's. What aschen said is also something to consider all porsches prior to 1974 were non-galvanized so they love to rust!

First off Silvia - You have obviously never driven one and are an ignoramus.
Back on topic - A friend of mine had a 914 and managed to put in a modded 2.0L and the car was awesome! No huge quick 0-60 but it handled like a go kart. I can only imagine what the 6 cyl. must go like. He was thinking of doing a 6 cyl. conversion but was lacking the funds and eventually had to sell the car after 3 years because he needed reliable all season transportation. It was a blast at autocross too. Nothing like a 1973 914 beating out newer model MR2's!! The targa top is nice too. Like it has been said previously, rust is a huge problem though. |

Had a buddy who had one with a 327 CI Vette motor, so it was more of an 914-8.
I think it made the car too heavy so it did not have that legendary agility, but that car was fast as lightning. My basic point is that the engine bay will accept well neigh anything. |

Thanks for the responses guys. I've found a couple of place for info on the web. Looks like this would have the potential to turn into the project from hell. Finding the appropriate specimen looks like a long-term project.

The 914-6 and the 916 are two different cars. (Most noticeably that the 916 was a coupe, not a targa top!) The 916 was never officially launched. Of the 11 prototypes built, only one was brought to North America. Its true that often people call a 914-6 a "916", but that's an error. Check here for one good breakdown: http://www.sierratel.com/randyl/9146hist.htm The specifics of the 916 are covered on the bottom of the page. EDIT: Here's another good page that shows the actual serial numbers for the eleven 916 prototypes that were built: http://www.porschedecals.com/history914w.htm Note that they begin with "914", which means that the serial numbers were generated for factory 914s and then converted to the 916 by welding on the steel roof panel in place of the plastic targa, etc. |

There was a light blue 916 on ebay a few years ago, I believe it sold for around $200,000. Such a sweet looking car, love the nice oversized flares.

I'd love to have one. My dad decided he could not afford one back in the 70s, so he got an MGB instead (a decent car if you drop an aluminum Buick V8 small block and rear jag suspension). He says that was the funnest test drive he ever took. |

It seems like owners who took their 914s to the track invariably used some sort of flare to accomodate wider tires. Some flares look better than others! I worry that I'm not mechanically inclined enough to make this idea a reality - especially because I'd like to drive it daily (can't be stuck in a garage 99% of the time).

I've been tinkering with the idea of an EJ swap into a 914 for an autocross car. I just need to find a beat to hell 914 w/o a motor and a 916 style transmission.

I was dyin for a 914 a while back, easier to find a 914 and do a 914-6 conversion than to actually find a factory 914-6. Mostly because you are not going to show the car, 914's are only respected by auto-xers and hippies. They aren't exactly revered in the porsche world.
All into getting the 914.. until I used the cash to put the downpayment on the sti. -- Steve |
