Default Project Wagon Fender Rolling

Car: '02 WRX Wagon
Wheel: 17x7.5 Rota Tarmac, ET48 (offset)
Tire: 225/45/17 Kumho 712

After tons of research looking at wagon wheel offsets and tire widths, I finally rolled the fenders after picking up the above wheels/tires from Turbo9000. I had executed some moderate sweepers and moderate hairpins without any rubbing on this set. I decided to go ahead and roll in the fenders as I want to go with a 235/40 tire next and future suspension plans may lower 1-1.5".

I was frightened by the prospect of having a body shop roll the fenders after hearing of some people paying $200-$400. Looked up David ("Salaki" on Nasioc) at RollYourFender.com and got the necessary tools (fender roller and industrial heat gun) for $50. Tools were in great condition and apparently in high demand (there always seems to be a bit of a waiting list so if you did this it might be a good idea to think ahead maybe 1-2 weeks to play it safe).

The directions on the site are very helpful and really the job is not too hard. Patience and a second person to use the heat gun are valuable so that the fender lip area that you are working on is ready to bend (and so the paint goes with it instead of cracking).

I post this so that wagon people can stop worrying about this or that offset, suspension, or tire and just run what would be best.

I will follow up this post with more down the line when I mount the 235's and/or any strut/spring that might affect fitment.

Here are a couple of pics to show what the finished product looks like. (I didn't take any during the work). The first picture is an unrolled front fender and the second picture is a rolled rear fender.

Total time with two people taking their time was ~2.5 hours. I still think its funny I did this considering I haven't gotten the car to rub on the road (and the wagon will most likely not be raced). However, it'll be fun to go with wider tires next time and also have the peace of mind that I won't have to worry about the crazy Wagon World of wheel offsets and the terrible number "225."

I did this w/ my wagon and am now running really wide 225's (like 245 wide ). Pretty easy, like you said take your time and use the heat gun.

Hey Big Sky! What tire? (S03, Azenis?)

I think I will go with a 235/40/17 Falken 451. I've heard good things about the tire and am really just looking for a higher performance tire for street...although putting these tires on would really encourage me to do some HPDE's and autoxes...

It's a S02- the oem Honda S2000 rear fitment. Great tire thus far- it's really wide for a 225- here's a pic of it compared to 245/45/16 T1S (S02 on
the left).

235/40 would be a good choice- lot's of good tires to choose from these days

Yeah be very careful of the autox/track bug

Wow...those really are wide. Kind of like some 205 Azenis that I used to run on another car that actually measured like 225.

17x8.5 Rota Slipstreams (+48 offset), but they would work just as well on 17x8 as well.

yup...the only reason i was thinking 235 for my car is because i like the tire width not to bow out too much from the wheel (i'm on 17x7.5)

Do you happen to know your fender/tire clearance with this combo?

thanks,
chad

PS I never thought just rolling the fenders would add so much room.

Will be installing some prodrive springs soon and will post back with any fitment/rubbing issues with the tires. I bet I will still be able to run the 235/40/17.

That's cool. When you post the results, will you let us know how much you're lowered?

I will be putting on the 02-03 Prodrive Springs which supposedly lower 20mm (.787 inches).

I will intially test out a 225/45/17 tire on a 17x7.5 wheel. Then later down the line, I will try a 235/40/17.

I'm running 17x7.5 ET48 Rotas with 225/45x17 FK451's - no fender rolling, no rubbing. I am running pretty agressive street alignment with -2F/-1.5 rear however.

with fenders rolled, I'd be willing to try 17x8.5 ET48 or higher with 235/40x17. good luck with your ride...

Yeah, it seems like stiff springs/struts + aggressive alignment = 225 fitting on wagon.

What do you think of those tires? Could you imagine a 235/40 FK451 on that 7.5" wheel or do you think there would be a lot of the shoulder bulging out? Also, what kind of driving do you do (autox, hpde, etc.)? Do you get even tire wear with that much camber?

Why I ask: I bet my rear camber will be about -1.5 after the springs, and I am hoping to get a bit more camber than that out of the front (-1.8 or so) after alignment. This is on a street car that will be at least 90-95% street driven. Is this too much camber, you think?

Definatly tell us whats up with the prodrives. I just got mine in the mail and i am going to put them on soon. Right now i am running 225/45/17s on 17by7s with a 50 offset. I want to go bigger though for autox.

Alright, Prodrives no problem. Actually, they work very well with the stock struts--definitely don't feel underdamped.
