Default urgent help needed on install of factory sub

Please help!

Today I just received a factory sub I purchased through a fellow I-clubber and began the install on my 98 L wagon w/ factory CD player, which I was told should be easy. I've pulled everything out, followed the instructions from subaruparts.com, and ran a search on here, but I have a problem that I haven't found an answer to.

The sub I recieved came with a cord, one end plugs into the sub, the other end consists of 6 cut wires, one with some red plastic tube on it. Now I was told this was an easy install, just plug and play, but according to the directions I seem to be missing something, a part perhaps. I am in the process of contacting the seller, since I was told it came with the harness. Is there a way to wire these six wires into the 14 point connector that connects to the back of the radio or do I need this harness to plug everything in.

Is this a problem since I'm putting in into an L stereo? Can I simply connect these wires to the ones that plug in the harness (none are the same color though). Please Please help. I am quite frustrated and want to get this work. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much.

-Charles

well this has been bugging me all afternoon, and i've become obessed with gettin this to work and i think i may have it. I found wiring diagrams from northursalia.com, and coupled with info from scoobymods.com, i can match up wires. The big question is will this work, and how should i go about it? If anyone knows, I would love to find out.

Thanks,

Anyone? Assuming i know which wire match with each other, can i either try and fit the sub wires into the harness or cut the wires comming from the harness and splice them with the sub ones? Little help? Thanks.

I'll trey to see what goes to what on my harness and I'll get back to ya. I'm pretty sure it sounds like you're missing the connectors at the radio but i'm sure you can tap them into whats there thats all the harness does-james

James,

Thank you very much. Like i mentioned, I'm gonna wait an see if i hear from the guy i bought it off of on here. If he has the harness then I'll wait, if not then I'll try and do this. My question to you is how would i connect the wires, should i try and pull wires out of the connector, pair the wire from the connector with the correct one from the sub and put it back into the plastic connector? or should I leave the original wire in the connector in the back of the stereo, cut that wire further down, connect the correct sub wire and do it like that. If you have any clue on what I'm trying to say, I'd appreciate your advice. If not, no big deal, I want to wait and see what the seller has to say. Thanks again for your help.

you're best but would be to find connectors to tap into the wire without cutting it, i think you're local audio shop should have something close to what i'm talking about, I call them inlines, but i'm sure there are plenty of other names for them. This is what I used to connect my aftermarket sub via a Line output converter(LOC, basically takes the speaker wires and makes them RCAs). I don't think pulling them out of the harness would work, you would have a hell of a time getting them back in. Good Luck-James

Interesting. Yeah, electronics is not my forte, but they do make something that will allow me to tap into the wires so as to connect the sub wires to them....excellent. Just need to find a place that has them. Looks like this is gonna be a weekend project, especially if I don't get a hold of the seller. Thanks for all you help James.

Default Related Problem

I have a somewhat related problem. I have a wiring harness that goes to the subwoofer, however the wires were cut before the plug that goes into the sub. Could someone please tell me the correct location of the wires going into the sub? what I need is a picture of the wiring harness at the end that plugs into the subwoofer, I have the plug and all the 6 wires already connected to the radio harness, just have to assemble it.

heh heh.......yeah I forgot to update my situation here. I did get it all to work a while ago and it sounds great!
What I recomend is to find the wiring diagrams for the sub and the deck. I found the diagram for the sub at scoobymods.com, and the one for the head unit at northursalia.com (Also look further up in this thread). By looking at these two diagrams, you should be able to match the cut wires to the wires comming out of the head unit. Believe me, I am no electrical genius, and I managed to do it with little difficulty. You need to purchase connectors to tap into the wires. I hope this makes sense. Anything else feel free to PM me. Good luck.

i donno know about you guys, but next time when you run into problems like this, first try to find out what signals each of the wires are carrying. after that, just splice the wires and connect them together via new connectors or solder them together if you dont plan on taking it off soon. e-tape it or plastic wrap it and you're all set.

Default The guy who you bought it from cut the harness

I had the a OEM sub and when I sold it, I had to include the piggyback harness with it.

you have your main radio harness that goes to the radio. Well that main harness is plugged to the end of the sub harness in which the sub harness has the plugs to go in the back of the radio.

Hope this helps,
Kevin

Adding to what kenchan wrote:

In the future for whatever reason, if you dont have the lil plug on the subharness, you cat get the details of the wiring off the pcb of the sub amp. Crack it open, its rather easy. All the details you need are printed right there in nice white letters. Front L+R, and power/ground. 6 wires. Thats it, simple.

(I know that mtbmech has already wired up his subwoofer, but for anyone else who reads this thread...)

Nobody really spelled this out here, but you can buy after-market harnesses to reconstruct what was cut from the wire going to the subwoofer. Then you won't need to cut or splice into the factory wiring.

On cars without the factory subwoofer, there is a simple wiring harness for the radio -- the wires go back to the speakers and power. This harness plugs into the rear of the factory radio.

The factory subwoofer comes with a "T" cable -- it has a plug that connects to the factory radio, and another plug that mates with the car's radio wiring harness. These two plugs are wired straight through (pin 1 to pin 1, etc.), like a short extension cord. But a few of the pins are also sent down the long leg to the subwoofer.

Here's the T-harness wiring by pin number:
Code:
Forward Reverse Subw Function
(to car) (to HU)
-------- ------- ---- --------
   1 1 NC Illumination +
   2 2 NC Right Front +
   3 3 NC Left Front +
   4 4 1 Right Rear +
   5 5 2 Left Rear +
   6 6 7 +12V Battery (constant)
   7 7 NC Dimmer (Illum. -)
   8 8 NC Right Front -
   9 9 NC Left Front -
  10 10 NC +12V Accessory (switched)
  11 11 8 Ground
  12 12 4 Right Rear -
  13 13 5 Left Rear -
14 14 NC Antenna Remote control

NC = No Connection to subwoofer
Note that power goes through an inline fuseholder behind the HU.

Subwoofer pins (looking at rear of T-harness subwoofer plug -- wires pointing toward you):
Code:
3 ### 2 1
8 7 6 5 4
You can replace what was cut off your "T" harness by getting two pieces:
  1. A 'normal' or "forward" car stereo wiring harness (this connects to the car's harness), and
  2. A wiring harness that plugs into the back of the radio (called a "reverse" harness).
Reverse harness:

Wiring pin-out here.

The only reverse harness that people have found so far is made by Scosche, their SU03R. Its pin-out is for [CORRECTION] 1993 and newer Subarus (besides the SVX). However, it lacks the second dimmer wire (pin 7) that is needed for the factory radio's illumination to work correctly.

The "forward" harness should be fairly easy to find at car stereo stores and online, but make sure it has all 14 wires. UPDATE: Nobody else includes the dimmer wire (pin 7) on this harness.

I'm making reverse and forward harnesses that have all 14 wires. For purchase information, please see this page or this thread on the SVX forums, and e-mail me with any questions.

Default Aftermarket head unit with factory subwoofer

The way I got mine to work was by splicing the orange and violet wires (the only two wires it has) from the subwoofer specific plug into the orange and violet wires in the regular harness. It was already getting power and signal from the other four wires, but the violet and orange had to be connected in order for it work at all.

Question Factory Subwoofer - WRX 2009

Can anybody comment on the quality of the factory sub-woofer H630SFG000 and easiness of installation? Does it come with a T/Y-harness or needs to be spliced in the existing radio/navigation system harness??

Same question for the shock sensor H7110FG010 and the Bluetooth kit H0018FG300...

Thanks. Daniel
