Found out a short throw shifter wasn't installed in my WRX..

So... it turns out that the boys at Carlsen Subaru forgot to order and install the short throw shifter I had told them to for my WRX. Didn't notice it right away since the shifter in my RS used to be somewhat sloppy, and the shifter in the WRX is tighter. But upon investigation of the delivery invoice, I found it wasn't one of the options. Since now I'd probably be installing one with *cough cough* help during an InstallFest, I'm looking for your opinions... Is this a good thing or a bad thing that it didn't get installed? Is an aftermarket shifter like the Kartboy better than the STI shifter I had originally wanted installed, or should I order up an STI one from subaruparts.com (currently on backorder)? The Kartboy is obviously cheaper, but I don't know much about the performance/quality difference. I'm willing to sink my money into quality, but I'm dumb here and don't know which one is the 'quality' one. And of course, does installation of the Kartboy, (or STI for that matter) void the warranty?

And for those of you who don't know me or the nick, I'm the guy who ran home to grab the power drill for Necromancer and bobski so they could get their Hella's installed at the last InstallFest.

You can't go wrong with the Kartboy. Best bang-for-the-buck shifter. I had the shifter/bushing combo on my last car, and I loved it.

I hope the dealer didn't charge you for the shifter that they didn't install.

BTW, thanks for the drill. We couldn't have finished the install without it.

As far as I know they didn't charge me for it, as the invoice in my car doesn't have it on it, but it's something I've gotta check out nonetheless, just to make sure. Prolly head up there this weekend to talk to Greg and make sure they didn't charge me for it. That would suck. And it'd suck if I voided the warranty by installing one on my own simply because they forgot to include it in my order..

No problem on the drill man, it was a short drive home and I had it. I tend not to have so much car or powertool stuff, as I'm a computer geek, so I was happy to help out. Now if you ever need computer gear, lemme know, I've got oodles that just sits in boxes..

Just a "FYI"-The STI shifter is the same part as the short shifter sold by Subaru. The only warranty at risk by installing a part not sold by a Subaru dealer is the on the part itself, and any damage that happens from not installing it properly. If you buy the part from a dealer and install it yourself, the part comes with a warranty (the parts warranty is one year, unlimited mileage from when it was purchased-the labor would not be covered). If a dealer installs the part, it is covered to the end of the 3 year, 36,000 mile basic warranty, or 1 year, 12,000 miles from the installation(whichever is longer). Both the part and the labor would be covered. We have installed quite a few of the short shifters, and everyone has been very pleased with them so far.

Hey Bruce or anyone,

what if you buy the part from somewhere(eg. Subaruparts.com) and have the dealer install it for you. would the warranty still be the same as if you were to buy the part from the dealer and have them install it?

Actually, we have to submit the invoice number and the date the part was sold(from a subaru dealer),when we make the warranty claim. The shifter sells for $260.00, and we charge $82.00 to install it(unless you bought your car at Subaru of Santa Cruz, where we give a 10% discount on parts and labor on our "Customer For Life" program).
I don't know how much the other guys are selling the part for, but after the shipping etc. it must be close.
