Power Door lock Rapid Clicking
Hello, I have a 2003 WRX and I'm have problems with my front passenger door lock. It just began clicking repeatedly when you go to lock the door. The door still locks and unlocks fine, just keeps making this rapid clicking noise for a few seconds. This happens with both the keyless remote or either lock switch up front. I would assume the actuator is malfunctioning but I just wanted to get some opinions before I order the part from the dealer. An actuator from the dealer is about $100.
Thanks, Aaron

First of all do you have an aftermarket alarm? If so it could just be a faulty brain becuase our lock systems run on a negative trigger.

Yes, I have a Clifford alarm. The alarm has been installed for about 6 months. Prior to that, there was an Alpine alarm installed in the car by the original owner.
I don't know much about electrical issues so any advice anyone can offer would be helpful. If it was the brain, would it not cause a problem with all the locks instead of just one? What would be the best way to diagnose if it is the actuator or the alarm that is causing the problem? I called the dealer and they want $240 for the actuator! Genuinesubarupats.com has them for $90. We get ripped off up here for parts! Thanks, Aaron |

Aftermarket alarms use a negative trigger pulse to emulate the operation of the switch.... This doesn't sound like the alarm but I have a few questions....
a. Does it also stutter when you press the door switch to lock and unlock the doors? b. Does it only stutter when you lock the door (unlock operates normal) c. Do you have factory keyless entry.... if so, do you still have the remote fobs? Try the system with the factory remotes... then does it chatter? I think I've seen subies do this before, but I think it was only under low voltage situations (car battery was dead)..... not that your is, but maybe for some reason the actuator isn't seeing enough voltage/current for it to work correctly. |

b) Yes, only does it when the door locks, it unlocks normally. c) I do have the factory fobs, I'll dig them up and try them when I get home tonight. Quote:
Thanks again, Aaron |

To bring this back from the dead, I just got around to replacing the power lock actuator last night. I had never taken a door panel apart before so I was a little nervous about breaking a tab or something.
I couldn't find any directions on how to go about doing this so I just followed some instructions for replacing speakers to take the door apart. Once you have all the trim parts and door panel off, plug the power window switch back in and roll the window back up. You can't get the door lock parts out otherwise. From there I unscrewed the one screw that holds the actuator to the door and the three screws on the side of the door where the door latch is. Now you just need to disconnect the 4 rods that are attached to the latch assembly. I had never done this before so it took me minute to figure out that the pink plastic things on the ends of the rods just pop off and swivel out of the way, allowing you to remove the rods easily. Now the old actuator and latch assembly will come out of the door. The actuator is held on to the latch with two screws, remove those and replace with the new actuator. Reverse the steps by re-connecting the rods, installing the three screws for the latch and the one screw for the actuator. Then roll the window back down and re-install the door panel and the rest of the trim. Everything snaps back into place pretty easily. Everything works fine now and I'm glad I did it myself. I'm sure I saved myself a few hundred dollars the dealer would have charged. Not to mention the part was half the price through a dealer in Upstate NY over the Canadian dealer ($120 vs. $240). Cheers. |
