just a reminder...i have an 06 OBS with the premium sound system 6 disc cd changer radio. It has "P-133" on the front and looks identical to the original pictures in the post. I ordered the DIN plug, got it today, took apart the radio, and there's no DIN connection! Doh!

unfortunately, we don't have the luxury that the legacy and legacy based outback do with the separate amplifier... i would really like to keep the oem headunit like a lot of us (i've had 3 systems stolen from me on previous cars and only factory looks factory)... if someone has the balls to open up the factory HU and splice one of the lines on the factory cd changer inputs and do some circuit work i think they'd have a nice integrated solution. considering i'll have my bachelors in electrical engineering in 2 months i probably should give it a shot, but i'm not willing to fry my headunit...

instead i'm saving up my pennies for the JL Audio CleanSweep ... pricey, yes. worth it? debatable.

When I picked up my 9-2x, I was sort of pissed that that little door stays open when you have something in the power socket- which (with an iPod and radar detector) is pretty much all of the time . Here's what I did-

Pull everything apart- NASIOC has good photos & info, so I'll skip it here...

Cut my RadioShack power splitter in half, and solder the (+) and (GND) from each female connector to one another. See the rubber band (actually strip of bike inner tube)? I pulled one apart to figure out which was which- the ribbed one goes to the outside (GND?) and the smooth to the center (+?)

Use little snap-on jumpers to connect them to the REAR of the cigarette lighter adaptor.

Fish the Radar detector up behind the stereo and out the rear corner of the clock panel:

Connect everything, use twist ties for cable management, and stuff it into the center console- there's loads of room:

You can see the iPod charger/line in cable coming out under the trim into the passenger footwell... haven't figured that bit out yet (don't feel like having a big Velcor disc on the back of my iPod), so it sits in a cup holder (too far back, IMHO).

Call it good!

You can get a DIN pocket that matches the center console EXACTLY from www.genuinesubaruparts.com, it runs about $18 and is better than the gaping hole you see above.

What did everyone else do?

That does not look right, since you don't have auto dimming mirrow just run the wire for the detector there and eliminate that thing going across your windshield.

Default Any tips for getting top of faceplate off?

Seduce

Many thanks for the tips on how to get to the HU. I'm just doing it myself and I wonder if you can add any tips for getting the faceplate off the radio unit.

The boot assembly popped off with no trouble, then I took the two screws out of the bottom of the faceplate and the sides popped out of their catches quite easily. However I can't get the top of the faceplate loose so I can get to the HU.

What's holding the top in there? Are there more plastic catches to pop? I'm reluctant to tug on it too hard for obvious reasons. - it doesn't seem that strong. I tried gentle pressure from a knife inserted into the top seam, but it still didn't want to come off. The sides are free, it's just the top that need to come free (without breaking) and I'm there!

Thanks for any extra tips you might have.

The upper part of the face plate pops off similar to the bottom. It is held in by clips. I suggest you move your hand up the backside of the face plate as high as you can get it then push outward to apply force to move the plate off. Then use your other hand to pull up/off the upper right side. That should get out the right corner, then move to the top middle for the left.

It's a pretty sturdy piece, I'd say. You'll have to get pretty jiggy wid it to break it.

Good luck,

ya, there has to be a better solution for the radar detector then running the wire infront of your line of view... i've seen clean installs of V1's that no wire was visable...
