FYI - when my coil packs were intermittently going out, I would get random misfires - but only when I was boosting the car - it always threw a code though, and told me which cylinder was misfiring if I remember right. In my case, I just rotated the coils to the different cylinders and kept track of where the new codes were showing the misfire...changed out those coils, and haven't had an issue since. In your case, it seems like more trial and error - but sounds exactly like my issue minus the no codes. Not sure if your ECU is flashed, but maybe that is hiding the codes by chance? Just thinking out loud...sure there is someone on here with better understanding than me. Good luck!

Just read through some of the other posts on your thread - if you have that many miles on your stock coilpacks, I'd definitely bet that it is the coils going out and your tune is hiding the codes from the CEL - mine never completely went out, they would just go out when I was on the throttle and I got the bucking/hesitation at higher boost, then would go back to working again. If I remember right, they aren't super cheap, so you may just want to do two at a time and see if it helps the issue. If it doesnt, then rotate those over to the other two cylinders and test it again. That's my .02.

I had an issue with my O2 sensor.
Usually went off when I was going about 80-100kph and flooring it.
The CEL would come on, then sometimes disappear while driving and would go off and stay off if I turned the car off.
When I took it in they couldn't figure it out at first as there was no code, but they tracked it to the O2 sensor which they replaced and all good again.
Also if you can count the number of short and long flashes with the light (if there is) as I know the older models would flash a certain way for different codes.

i believe the flashing light was OBD1 which is super old school. any USDM wrx is OBD2.

My next step is to replace my coil packs, wish someone in my area was generous to come over have a beer and test it out with their packs but looks like I'm out of luck

So, where would you recommend getting new coil packs? Or which packs would you recommend? Think I'll just swap all 4 see what's going on

You could try and buy from the dealer - but if you're like me, I hate paying the dealer prices so I go to RockAuto.com or Ebay for parts. You could always go to local autozone/o'riley's/NAPA to pick up the parts too. If you were located in Idaho, I'd be more than happy to help you out with the coil packs. I doubt you live out here though. LOL

RockAuto shows prices per coil pack of roughly $35 through $69 (2003 WRX).

Born and raised in the Bay Area...moved out here a couple years ago to buy some land and raise my kids with farm life values. Plus CA was just killing me financially. I was a bit more towards Sacramento though, and much less crowded than good ol' San Ho. Glad you found some coils - hope that is what will fix your problem. I know how much I hate it when the Subie starts actin up!

I moved out here last November for work, I'm originally from New Haven CT. The weather here is much nicer but way too many people I understand why you moved out.

Ok update, replaced old coil packs, replaced starter that blew up afterwards..... Still hear a misfire, and a little of a backfire. Hard to tell in a parking garage. Does anybody have any other ideas on what to try next?

Another update, checked fuel pressure. 40 psi at idle and goes up to about 50 when I blip the throttle a bit. Still backfiring, now it sounds like it's backfiring a bit too. Just looking for things to check

Next update, did a live data with my buddies Innova. No code exept the maf code from when I unplugged the maf to see if it was working properly. But I took pictures of my live data, currently trying to figure how to imbed them my 02s b1 s1 (mA) reading was -127, idk if that's right or what I'm supposed to be reading on anything but that's the only thing that stood out

Update. Cleaned iacv, was actually bound up a bit, smoothed it out feels allot smoother. Cleaned crank sensor, had some **** on the bottom of it, nice and clean now. Next step is I'm going to take injectors out and have them professionally cleaned. Think these were put in about 160 miles ago.

Found a clogged injector. 1 was feeding half the amount of the other 3. Just ordered 4 new, Deathchwerks 21s-01-0650-4, I'll post an update if it works.
