Default Wanted to borrow/rent - Digital vid.cam.

I'd like to put an in-car camera into my car for the Maine Summer Rally, but right now most all my funds are tied up. Is there anyone willing to help a brother out? I'd pay cash to rent it if necessary

I wish I could say for certain that I'm going to be there. But I cannot, or I'd take stills. Hopefully with my new camera by then because my Olympus E-10 is trying to be sold right now.

Something a little more handheld that I don't have to lug around over my shoulder.

Kodak has one coming out in Aug that looks promising (DX6440) or something like that. The Pentax Optio 550, Canon S50, and the Olympus C50 zoom are top on the list right now. (All 5 megapixel cameras)

The Olympus C50 zoom had nice feel to it. I didnt even know Kodak was still around. We got a d100 its great but overkill most of the time.

Excellent! I'll stay in touch after the rally to get a copy of the video(s). I'll pay any shipping and tape costs...

I'd loan you my Canon ZR40 digital camera, except it's going to be in OUR car at Maine. We ran it at Sawmill, Dave was really impressed with the digital quality over his VHS-C. Plus, my camera is about half the size of his, so there's less camera shake. Ie., practically none.

Rather than a removable clamp for the camera, he welded a little "shelf" onto the roll cage, with a rubber mat to sit between the shelf and the camera. After bolting the camera to the shelf (screws into the standard tripod mount on the bottom), he tied a ratchet strap around the whole setup. Video was possibly the smoothest I've ever seen...

If anyone is interested, there will be a DVD released later this year (August) that has footage of all the cars at:
* Great North Woods 2002 (Berlin, NH)
* Maine Forest Winter 2002
* Sandhills Sandblast 2003
* Ski Sawmill 2003

Their web page is here, nothing yet but you can watch for it:

P.S. here are links to a couple stages from Sawmill, see for yourself how little camera shake there is:

http://homepage.mac.com/jeremyrowlan...mill03_ss1.mov (11 MB)
http://homepage.mac.com/jeremyrowlan...mill03_ss2.mov (19 MB)

The camera did "hiccup" a couple times, as digital camcorders are prone to do, but we didn't lose more than a second or so of video.

I paid about $400 for the camera (Canon ZR40) at B&H (http://www.bhphotovideo.com), and I recommend investing in a bigger battery as well. I don't think they make the camera anymore, so you might find it on clearance for dirt cheap somewhere.
