Tire Pressures
Ok, I have Kumho Ecsta ASX with a 'max' pressure rating of 51 PSI. I regularly check my tire pressure about once every one or two weeks when I wash the car. I've had them set at 35 PSI front and 32 PSI rear.
If you're not familiar with Kumho Ecsta ASXs, they have a soft sidewall. At 35 or even 37 PSI sometimes, the front tires still are wearing on the outsides. I had the alignment done, and it wasn't off my much, but is corrected now to factory specs. I filled up to 40 PSI front and 35 PSI rear tonight with the local gas station's air pump which is digital. Apparently my tire pressure gauge has been reading wrong (it's no digital)... when I started filling them, the front had about 32 PSI and the rear had 28 PSI. I found this odd since I did drive on them a little to get to the gas station, so I figured they'd be a little higher. Now I can see why they might be wearing... My main question: is 40 PSI 'safe'? I know they're rated for 51 PSI... but that doesn't specifiy hot or cold. I know it might be a bit high for most of you - I just want the tires to no wear on the outside as much. I do understand it could reduce overall grip a little, but I don't drive hard at all really, this is just my daily driver. Thanks... and sorry for the long write-up on such a simple matter. The max tire pressure rating on the sidewall of the tire is cold PSI. Running 40 is perfectly safe. Some tires perform MUCH better with higher than average pressures, the ASX may be one of those tires. Your ride will be much firmer though, maybe even uncomfortable over bumps.

I did notice it being firmer. Not uncomfortable though... I actually liked it being non-squishy when going over bumps and whatnot.
Thanks for the response. |

You are fine running them at 40psi.
I have the same tires on my Wagon and I've have them at 40psi all the way around. It helps a little, but the ride is harsher. On a different note: I'm never going to run Kumho's on any of my cars ever again. They handle like crap and have very poor feedback. |
