Yep. Although I'm *only* burning a quart per 1900-2500 miles. Summer may help out, hopefully.

Then the "engineers" should change their break-in procedures, IF that IS the cause of it.

Checked my dipstick last night at the gas station, read halfway between the two dots, was at the top dot when I did the oil change. Have checked it religiously up to this point every fill up and it has not gone down at all until now. Car has just over 4000 miles on this oil fill of Amsoil OE, and 7300 miles on the car. Im pretty sure the gas station was sitting on a slight incline so not sure if the reading was off based on this. Hard to fine level ground to get accurate reading. Keeping fingers crossed its not a burner. Will being doing a oil change tomorrow to Amsoil XL.

Broke my car in based on the recommended method, took the car up to 4000 rpm often once engine was up to temp, varied speed, load and rpm.

Being on an incline can make a huge difference in the reading. As much as possible, try to check your levels when the car is parked in the exact same location.

Agreed. Scared myself when I first bought the car with a low reading, but didnt realize how much thin 0w20 was and that incline/decline makes a big difference. Going back to my buddies shop tomorrow night to change the oil and will be able to see a more accurate measurment from the same spot. I was also considering capturing and measuring the used oil that comes out, but am not sure how accurate this will be. I know not all of the oil comes out during an oil change, and I have a fumoto which will leave a little oil in the pan since the threads protrude into the oil pan.

Sounds good. I suggest that you find a level spot that's more convenient than your buddy's shop. Then you can check your levels accurately without relying on your buddy.

For example, I check my oil in the same bay of my garage. I also only check the level when the engine is stone cold, so that I know all of the oil has drained into the pan.

@79, nope not in Florida. Ill try and measure what comes out tomorrow, just trying to figure out what the amount should be. 5.3 goes in, some oil will be in the pockets on the pan, some will still be in the lines. Around 5qt should come out if it didnt burn anything? Roughly.

I think you'll be loosing more than .3 qts in the drain. I think you're better off using the diptstick as a delta measurement from when you fill initially. Keep in mind that from low to high on the stick is ~1qt.

0w20 is very viscous, especially when hot.
You should get at least 4.75 quarts or more when you drain it, if it isnt burning oil.

Update after changing my oil tonight. Looks as though I dodged a bullet, for now, as the car appears to not be burning anything. Was able to verify with the dipstick on level ground, and also measured what came out of the car. Almost 5qt even came out of the car and filter, put exactly 5.3 in when I changed the oil previously; for those of you curious as to how much will come out. This fill was amsoil OE at 4600 miles, driving fairly spirited. 5.3qt of Amsoil XL went in tonight, we'll see how that works out. I will send the XL for UOA when the time comes.

Moral of the story, check the dipstick on level ground as it makes a huge difference. It amazes me how just a little elevation change can skew the dipstick reading by 1/2qt!

I noticed that a few months ago. Car appeared level but was just a little bit off. I ended up over filling by 6-8oz. In reality I didn't need more than 2oz.

I'm curious how xl works for you, my car didn't like it, but I changed to it add 1200 miles so it was still breaking in. My car really liked signature and I will be changing back to that in the future

@flyboy, I remember you mentioning that your car burned a bit more with the XL. My initial though process with the xl was that running it to 7500 miles should be no problem as its rated for 10,000. Thought it would be a little less prone to burning at a 7500 mile interval vs OE. I guess I will find out.

I'm curious as to what exactly your car said to you for you to know that it didn't like XL but really liked signature! Haha

Oil light came on at just under 700 miles after my last top off. Not going to even check the level till 1000 miles. If its not dangerously low at 1000 miles, I'll let it go to 1200 and check it again. If at 1200 miles the level is down to the bottom hole on the dipstick, I'll be calling the dealership and demanding a consumption test.

I'll keep you guys updated.

So I understand we can discontinue the maintenance agreement? I would like to start using Amsoil Signature in my Impreza as well, but can't justify it since I blew it and my oil changes are free now... How do I get my money back so I can start using Amsoil Signature without continuing to pay for the Dealer changes?

I'm not under the impression that using a specific brand of oil is going to stop your car from burning oil if that is going to happen. just something to consider in case that was your reasoning...

Actually no, and this is probably the wrong place to post that since the people here are having problems with oil consumption...

So- I pull into the company lot this morning and there sat a shiny blue Audi A3 Quattro. Turns out a co-worker's wife let him drive her car. 78k they have on it and apparently they really love it. I'm gonna finagle a test drive out of him...
