2020 Suburban Prototype Appears To Feature Independent Rear Suspension

Chevy’s all-new 2020 Suburban is on its way, and the latest spy shots of prototype models show some very interesting changes not outside, but rather underneath the full-size SUV.

The photos show that the new Suburban will have an independent rear suspension (IRS) design, which is a notable departure from the current model’s solid rear axle setup. GM made the effort to disguise the rear suspension setup on the prototype by hanging some bristle-like camouflage, but the photos still show clear evidence of independent rear suspenders.

An independent rear suspension configuration is known to deliver more nimble handling while also providing higher levels of comfort for vehicle occupants, since each wheel will be able to react to imperfections in a road surface independently of the other.

Expect to see the 2020 Suburban to make its global debut in the first half of 2019, and go on sale later that year as a 2020 model. An all-new, future Chevy Tahoe will also be derived from the new Suburban as a shorter variant for the 2020 model year (more on the 2020 Tahoe).

The Chevrolet Suburban is a full-size Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV). It is currently Chevrolet’s biggest SUV, slotting above the regular-length and also full-size Chevrolet Tahoe. Essentially, the Suburban is the extended-length Tahoe.

The current model was introduced for the 2015 model year and represents the 11th generation of the Suburban nameplate. The model rides on the GMT-K2 platform shared with the Chevrolet Silverado, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Sierra, GMC Yukon and Yukon XL as well as the Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV.

The 2018 Chevy Suburban represents the fourth model year of the eleventh-generation Suburban. The vehicle remains highly competitive in its segment and the 2018 model year brings various improvements, most notably the Suburban RST (Rally Sport Truck) appearance package.

The 2019 Chevy Suburban represents the 11th generation Suburban, and offers up a new exterior color, a new Premier badge on the tailgate, and new color availability for the Suburban RST as well as the introduction of the Suburban RST Performance Package.

The Chevrolet Suburban is built at the GM Arlington factory in Texas operated by GM USA.

All-New 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe And Suburban Will Be Revealed December 10

A slew of next-generation SUVs are headed down the pipe, with the all-new 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe and 2021 Chevrolet Suburban both slated to drop cover on December 10th.

The all-new models will ride on the GM T1 body-on-frame vehicle platform, the same architecture used by the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and 2019 GMC Sierra 1500. In addition, the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe and Chevrolet Suburban are expected to come equipped with aluminum swing panels (hood, trunk, doors, etc.), which will pair nicely with the T1 platform to help shed some serious weight compared to the current models.

As we reported previously, the new SUVs will both come equipped with a new independent rear suspension setup, either as standard equipment or as an available option. Not only will this give the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban significant improvements to both ride and handling, but it will provide the SUVs mechanical parity with rivals like the Ford Expedition.

As for what will be mounted under the hood, we expect the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban to offer the turbocharged 2.7L L3B inline four-cylinder, and/or the naturally aspirated 5.3L L84 V8. As for cog-swapping duties, we expect those to be handled exclusively by the new GM 10-speed automatic transmission.

Per usual, the next-gen models will also come with completely new designs for both the exterior and interior. As we covered previously, these will come with an “exceptional attention to detail” that includes new fascia and lighting treatments, plus improvements to third-row seating. What’s more, the front ends will come with front air curtains that will make the SUVs more efficient with the go-juice.

- plus GM discounts are like Rock Auto, just have to look for it before buying

For reference Expedition XLT Max is about $5k more.

None of the other 7 passenger SUV's on the market can touch these two's cargo room with 3 rows up; towing capacity; etc.

Eh, people shopping for the utmost person hauling, cargo holding, boat towing, LS powered, transfer-case equipped vehicle with 72 month, 0% loan after GM discount knocks the price down 15% justify it.

Subaru makes a $64k compact car (wow, just wow) and Honda makes a $36k Civic. $50k for a Suburban is a deal.

That's 2.7 turbo 4 is a thirsty engine in the Silverado so I can't imagine much better if it powers the Suburban.

The 2.7L isn't supposed to actually be fuel efficient in the real world. It's supposed to get a good EPA rating.
