Default Corvette C8.R previews new 5.5-liter V8 for production car

The Chevrolet Corvette C8.R race car has apparently confirmed rumors of a new 5.5-liter V8 that will be heading to the production car.

GM says the C8.R adopts a 5.5-liter engine to comply with IMSA engine displacement rules, which would prohibit the company from using the 6.2-liter LT2 V8 found in the street-legal car.

The engine produces 500 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque, representing a modest increase of five horses and 10 pound-feet over the LT2 V8.

The C8 Corvette's powertrains have been the subject of numerous rumors, some of which are contradictory, though most seem to agree that the 5.5-liter engine is of a new design and will make its way to the production car.
The Z06 edition is the most likely candidate to receive the new V8 in its naturally aspirated form. Rumors suggest it could be turbocharged for the ZR1 and add hybrid tech for the Zora flagship.

It looks great and sounds incredible. Hope it’s a high revving N/A in the Z06.

Z06 with this engine will be godly for looks and sound. I don't even care if it's slow relative to anything else.

If it's built for IMSA there's little need to "over due" the power plant. They'll BOP this thing to be running with the Porsches, BMW's, Mclaren's, and Benz.

Perhaps a Le'Mans version won't be so capped.

Until that body kit is headed to the production car ... no care.
