Default Lexus UX concept revealed in Paris

Lexus UX concept revealed in Paris

The Lexus UX concept has made its world debut at the Paris motor show, offering a glimpse of Lexus’s future design direction.

The concept is expected to influence a production SUV model that will replace the CT 200h hatchback in Lexus’s future line-up.

The UX concept has been designed by Lexus’s European design centre, ED2, and outside it has muscular wheel arches with sharp, angular lines on its five-door body.

“This UX concept is all about anticipation and Lexus’ unparalleled knowledge in the SUV market,” said Dr Johan Van Zyl, President and CEO of Toyota and Lexus in Europe. “We are ready for the next chapter of a bolder and more emotion in a Lexus SUV – the UX concept.”

The bold-looking concept’s two rear doors curve out with the swollen wheel arches, and the door handles are all housed in the car’s middle due to the rear-hinged back doors.

At the back, there’s a coupé-like roofline and sharp tail-lights with LED internals. The overall body looks smaller than those of the Lexus NX and RX, supporting information from sources that it previews a production car that'll sit below them.

Mounted on the front of the doors are rear-facing cameras, which link to interior rear view screens.

Lexus describes the cabin as featuring “imaginative technologies for an immersive driver experience”, and that the interior mixes traditional craftsmanship with high-tech manufacturing techniques.

The seats use Lexus’s Kinetic Seat Concept technology, which uses spider web-like fabric that makes them both light and slim.

The concept also gets dual-screen infotainment with HMI technology, a wrap-around dash and striking colour scheme.

While Lexus hasn’t revealed what powers its UX concept, there appear to be steering-wheel mounted shift paddles and gear selector buttons on the centre console, suggesting this model features a combustion engine of some sort.

A pair of rear tailpipe surrounds add weight to this suggestion, but given recent trends in the motor industry, it seems highly likely the concept would also use some kind of electrified power.

The US market will just love this. Even "toned down" for production, I bet it will still be fugly.

Default Production Lexus UX Rumored to Debut in March

Lexus UX crossover to break cover in Geneva?

British media outlets report the Lexus UX crossover will make its debut in early March at the Geneva Auto Show. The soft-roader will slot in at the bottom of the company's line-up.
Lexus previewed the UX's design in 2016 with the UX concept (pictured). It quickly confirmed plans to turn the design study into a production model, a sensible decision considering the crossover segment's immense popularity.

"We are doing [the UX]. It's not so far away," Yoshihiro Sawa, Lexus' executive vice president, said last year.

The UX is an important model because it will steer Lexus into an expanding segment that it has never competed in before. However, Sawa explained it's not just looking to satisfy its dealers by launching more crossovers. Cars like the UX are needed in order to lure younger buyers into the company's showrooms.

"Except IS and CT, Lexus owners are aged," he explained, adding the company wants to become more youth-focused.

The UX's imminent arrival, reported by Car, could spell the end of the CT. Lexus dropped the model in the United States last year but it carries on with minor updates in other markets. Developing a successor on Toyota's modular platform is possible, but the CT's problem is a global one.

As a four-door hatchback, it should appeal to buyers in Europe. The problem is that Lexus suffers from a near-complete lack of an image across the pond; rivals like the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, the BMW 1 Series and the Audi A3 outsell the CT by a substantial margin. Buyers in Lexus' biggest markets, America and China, have traditionally shunned hatchbacks in favor of crossovers.

In that light, it's difficult for decision-makers to put together a business case for a next-generation CT. It's also easy for them to justify adding another crossover to the Lexus catalog. If the rumors are accurate, we'll see the first-ever Lexus UX in the metal on March 6th, the Geneva show's opening day.

Default Lexus UX previewed officially ahead of Geneva

Quote:

The first official pictures and information about the road-going UX sport utility vehicle have arrived courtesy of Lexus, ready to spark a polarizing debate on the Japanese automaker’s take of the immensely fought subcompact crossover segment.

While the styling is significantly “milder” than what the official previewing concept came up with, the production-ready UX is still among the more striking entries in the segment, and we’re not just talking about the odd exterior, but also about the multi-layered dashboard setup. The exterior is a statement on itself – huge spindle grille, squarish wheel arches, a bespoke design for the side mirror caps, integrated LED daytime running lights into the headlights and huge vertical trim pieces housing the fog lights get plastered on the front bumper. We haven’t seen the rear in its entirety yet, but there’s a hint of the taillights spanning the entire width of the car.

Lexus has previewed the UX in the 250h version, complete with the stylish and sporty F Sport trim, and moving inside we can see the new entry in the SUV segment has decided to even up the ante on its bigger brother – the NX – by sporting a fully digital instrument cluster. Lexus will take the entire wrap off the urban UX crossover on March 6 at the Geneva Motor Show and we’ll be there to give you all the hot details and fresh live pictures.

For me that's a good thing. The concept had way too much flair IMHO. Does Lexus have an identity crisis? Their design doesn't really scream premium luxury, yet their cars don't seem aggressively sporty either.

i'm on the fence... it looks like a lexus'ed up corolla in some ways. And it probably is.

I'm assuming this will be a hybrid only model to replace the ct.

Default Lexus Shows Off New “Urban Explorer” at NYIAS

Lexus Shows Off New “Urban Explorer” at NYIAS

The new Lexus UX is being billed as an "urban explorer" because of its utility and ability for city adventures.

Americans are often seen as thinking that bigger is always better. However, the hottest new sellers in the U.S. are small, luxury utes, which could be seen as “bigger” in terms of style, technology and performance, and one might say that is always better.

The new Lexus UX, which is making its North American debut at the New York International Auto show, certainly lives up to that bill. The new “urban explorer” of utility vehicles, the UX fills a gap in the luxury brand’s line-up at the right time.

“The first-ever Lexus UX is designed for the modern urban explorer seeking a fresh, contemporary and dynamic take on luxury driving,” said Chika Kako, executive vice president of Lexus International and chief engineer of the UX.

“We designed the UX to appeal to buyers in their 30s who seek not only what is new and exciting, but what is also relevant to their lifestyles.”

The Lexus UX provides a mix of style and function perfect for city dwellers.
The UX, which made its debut Geneva, is the first vehicle to uses the brand’s new GA-C, or Global Architecture – Compact, platform. The new base is extremely rigid and has a low center of gravity improving the ride and handling of the new UX.

Having the ability to move in-and-out of spaces quickly and authoritatively while being easy to park makes it ideal for a city commuter, hence the “urban” crossover.

The 2019 Lexus UX will be available in two versions: a gasoline-powered model and a hybrid. The UX 200 introduces a new 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine paired with a new Direct-Shift continuously variable transmission (CVT).

The UX 250h pairs the same 2.0-liter gas engine with a new fourth generation hybrid-drive system. New technology that networks with navigation allows the UX 250h to proactively optimize hybrid operation by learning, and adapting to the driver’s routes and driving habits.

Those driving habits can be improved with a vehicle whose proportions allow for easy maneuverability. The UX boasts a best-in-segment 34-foot turning circle. A 103.9-in. wheelbase contributes to a smooth, stable ride and cabin roominess, while the 177-inch length lets the Lexus UX easily slip into convenient “compact only” parking spaces.

The upscale, two-tone leather interior of the new UX is matched only by the soft-touch finishes as well as technology.

The new UX can also be equipped with the brand’s F Sport suspension system and can be combined with a UX-tailored version of the high-response Adaptive Variable Suspension system that increases damping force to minimize roll when cornering or changing lanes and reduces damping force in straight line driving to preserve ride quality. When AVS is fitted, it is linked to the Sport S+ mode in the vehicle’s Drive Mode Select system.

The new model borrows is exterior styling from the new RX and the brand’s new styling directive, which is to be less staid and more aggressive. Featuring the newest iteration of the spindle grille, the vehicle’s front and rear fenders are flared to give it a dramatic presence.

The aforementioned spindle grille uses a new block-shape mesh pattern with individual elements that gradually change in shape as they radiate out from the central Lexus emblem, almost providing a 3-D effect, according to the maker.

Entering and exiting the UX is made easier through optimal placing of the hip-point and unique shaping of the seat cushion. The “human-centered” approach continues behind the steering wheel. The instrument panel’s low design and slim A-pillar moldings improve visibility, giving the driver a “commanding view” of the road, which is expected from a crossover, but a driving position more like that in a hatchback.

A “seat-in-control” concept focuses operation of all key vehicle functions and technology around the driver’s side of the cabin. There’s plenty of technology in the Lexus UX, and here again, the human-centered design approach makes it all easily accessible. One example is the integration of audio switches into a palm rest on the center console.

Another is that each of the UX’s air vents uses a new single-knob control for airflow direction and volume while the vents themselves are illuminated using a new wireless system. By combining the two functions in a single control, the vents could be made larger, improving their effectiveness. Each control’s LED light source is wirelessly powered using electromagnetic resonance between two coils vibrating at the same frequency.

The UX 200 and UX 250h will start production this fall and go on sale in the U.S. in December. Pricing will be announced closer to the on-sale date.

Default Lexus to reveal first production EV at Chinese show

Quote:
Lexus will reveal its first series production electric car, which will be an electric version of the UX crossover, at the Guangzhou motor show in China later this month.

The Japanese firm hasn’t given any firm details of the car ahead of the 22 November reveal, but says it is “specifically crafted to suit the needs of audiences in China and in Europe”. But it will be based on the electric Toyota C-HR, a sister crossover to the UX that is currently offered in the Chinese market. The car is likely to be named the UX Electric.

Lexus and parent firm Toyota are due to launch three electric models by the end of 2021. Lexus showcased a dramatic EV concept called the LF-30 at the Tokyo motor show recently, which was intended to preview the general style of its future battery-electric cars.

The LF-30, which is similar in size to the Jaguar I-Pace, uses a new EV architecture being developed by Lexus and Toyota, which is planned to be introduced from 2022.
