This week-end I tried swapping the head units without any rewiring.
My goal was to see if this was a simple bolt on.

First of all, all plugs from my 2015 dash harness had the equivalent socket in the 2019 radio.
2 sockets where left unplugged in the 2019 radio as I do not have these plugs.

Results:
- Radio turned on and was playing, CD was working
- USB plug was not working (I could see popup on phone going on and off)
- Backup camera was not working
- Radio would not power off when turning the car off

I've put back the 2015 radio in the car for now as I need the backup camera to go to work.

If any of you have the 2015 and 2019 radio wiring harness I'm convinced this could work by swaping around some wires.

here is a picture of the 2 radios back next to each other

I am hoping you can get this to work but some things I notice are that I don't think the 2015 Impreza has a telematics unit and in the 2019 WRX telematics unit intercepts the signal of the front 2 speakers while the rear speakers are directly connected to the head unit I believe. Also the satellite switch works on certain resistances for different models so that might require some modding. For example Vol"+ on my 2017 forester requires less than 1 ohm but on the 2019 WRX that command would be Seek forward as that is less than one ohm. The backup camera could be wired differently but the voltage for the 2019 backup camera is 6V(I have the wiring diagram for the 2019 WRX with resistances).

I currently have a base 2018 STI with the dual climate zone and back up camera. Does the base 2019 radio unit fit in the 2018? Lots of post about the unknown of the HK unit but has anyone tried the base unit. Attempting to retain the stock look and obtain Apple Car Play.

Non-Nav (Phone button) bigger screen Unit just listed on eBay for a reasonable price.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/283666512028?ul_noapp=true

I myself am still holding out for one with the MAP button.

Default Seicane android head unit 08-14 wrx

I have everything working on my head unit but my steering wheel controls. I was wondering so one has had this same problem before.

Do I I need another harness to make it work?

After checking the service manual for the 2015 impreza, the steering wheel switch should not work in your car so to get it to work you would either have to hardmod the resistors in it or get something like a arduino and a wire that up to a digital potentiometer and since the switch has 2 circuits you would need 2. For me and my forester that's not worth all the work so I will probably buy a seicane android auto unit or a pioneer, thats just too much work.

I think you would need to get the buttons to have the resistance itís expecting. So like it was said, soldering on the right resistors to accomplish it. Alternatively I would think swapping the steering wheel buttons for a 2019ís might work and is easier imo. Though I wouldnít know, or if itís even a direct swap with the connectors.

Not sure if it's already been provided or not but here goes... Downloaded/subscribed to the Subaru technical info site and got the diagrams for the Base 6.5" model (which is what i have) the audio good straight from the radio to the speakers. If anyone wants a PDF version of it let me know. Going to be doing a full system but keep the stock head unit (at least for now) as i actually like the way it looks and honestly haven't had issues with it using Android Auto.

I'll take a copy if you dont mind. Currently installing a full system--only got the two front doors done so far...sound deadening installation took forever.

Just purchased a used 2019 WRX radio to try and swap into a 2018 STI. Ill let you all know how things go when I receive it. Swapping the headunit and also the USB plugs to the 2.1 version which I hope will allow Apple CarPlay (from what I can tell these are plug and play)

Do you have the "premium" Harmon Kardon system in your STI?

What radio do you have now (6" Base, 7" Phone button, 7" Nav button) and which one did you buy?

So I've got a 2017 WRX base that I upgraded to the 7in 2016 Forester radio. I have an iPhone now and I would love to have the new 2019 WRX radio to use the long awaited Apple Carplay. I imagine the conversion is a lot more straight forward for going from a 2017 to 2019, no?

I will do just about whatever it takes to upgrade. This new radio looks significantly better than the 7in Premium radio.

Nice, i think you'll have the same radio staying on after the car is off unless you add the door wire, and needing a camera voltage regulator unless you plan to replace the camera assembly, but overall it should be easier than dealing with the MAP HK Amp radios.

You'll probably have the same issues I mentioned above but shouldn't be bad if you grab a PHONE radio.

Right, I don't want the Nav system, actually. I just want the "base" 7in radio with carplay. No point in nav when you have carplay or android auto.

Isn't the powering off feature just a simple tap to the door lights? Anybody know of someone who has invested in making some wiring harnesses for this swap? I tried reaching to to Brian? at AutoHarnessHouse, but no response yet

So I was able to install the radio yesterday to see what results I would have. I purchased a 2019 WRX radio with phone button and was installing it in a 2018 with the same phone button radio 7Ē.

I ran into trouble with the harness not matching for the one input, the pink wire I believe is used for Starlink. The backup camera worked, along with XM radio. The radio does not turn off when the car is turned off as the 2019s are wired to turn off when door opens. The Apple car play logo was on the unit but did not function with the current USB ports in the car.

Hope this helps. Iím going to continue research to add to door wires but looking more like Iíll go the aftermarket route with a simple plug and play unit to get CarPlay.

Hope this helps others looking for some answers.

Hmm good to know. I think you should give up and sell that radio to me

In all seriousness, though, contact Brian at AutoHarnessHouse and ask if he can supply you with the USB cable you need. I asked him about this and got this response:

"The cabling should all be the same for these two headunits. I'm assuming you used the cable that we build to retain the backup camera.

For the USB hub, the problem is probably that there isn't power routed to the USB Hub/Port. I can build an adapter that will fix this that will connect under the port. cost is $44 and you'll need to find a place to tap in the +12V. If you like, we can do this behind the headunit with a jumper like this:
https://www.autoharnesshouse.com/76297.html"

Easy peazy lemon squeezy

Default 2019 WRX and STi get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto... BUT

Hi guys, i tried the radio again to verify the steering wheel controls

My steering wheel control are as follow ( 2015 impreza sport tech with eye sight)

Menu is now volume up
Back is. Ow volume down
Vol up is next song
Vol down is next song
Prevuous song is previous song
Next song is previous song
Mute is source
Source is now phone
Talk is now source
2 phone button not working

The reverse camera is still not working
Usb connection still not working

The unit is still not shutting down.
I tried manually shutting it down but the screen i lighted up and black when the car is off as you can see in the pic

Bluetooth connection was working a1

I put 1 cd in and noticed the sound quality is improved by a lot! A lot more bass and now i hear the tweeters a lot more.
Now that iíve heard this improved sound quality I really want to make it work!
Another good point is that sirius seems to be unlocked on that radio. Maybe because the car is less than 1 year old but my 2011 elantra back in the time never got itís sirius blocked after 5 years and i never paid anything so Iím hopefull.

Iíll try to talk to the Ben the harness guy as iíd like to work with him to prepare a plug n play adapter.

Hi guys. I just installed a 19 Wrx radio to my 17 Wrx sti non karmon unit 7". Everything went smooth and I did change the starlink pink wire to that of a 19 Wrx....same pin location. Everything works including USB mic and aux. Only 2 minor issues is it does not turn off. It only turn off after 3 mins and I timed it many times on gps/Android auto/music Pandora and it always turns off. So if it is not a biggie you can just let it sit for 3 mins. I also tested starlink and it worked fyi. 2nd issue is the steering wheel controls. I already purchased those from Subaru for about 100 bucks. They call y cruise switch part #83154VA300. I will test those when they come in

If you travel to remote parts of the country with no cell service that Android Auto Map will be useless unless you preemptively download every offline map you need prior. MAP button radios will still work.

The backup camera worked without any adapters? Any pics from the back of the radio showing how you have everything plugged in?

Thanks for the switch part number, please let us know if that fixes the steering wheel mounted controls. Which radio did you swap in? Base or 7 "Phone" button? Any pics from the back of the radio showing how you have everything plugged in?

What did you have to do to get the android auto/ Apple CarPlay to work. Did you swap out the USB ports? Also any ideas for the door switch to allow the unit to turn off when driver door is opened after turning car off.

So if I'm reading this right, it sounds like if I want to go 18 7" phone button head unit => 19+ phone button head unit, it looks like it should be a pretty straightforward as long as I swap out the steering wheel controls?

That, and I may need to wire up the door so that the HU shuts off when it should.

Yea it's probably the same as my forester, like I said earlier Vol Up should be seek forward with the new radio. If you can find a 2019 satellite switch that can fit your car it should work but you need to find one that fits and there are a few styles for the 19's. After checking there might be one that fits my forester so If I can find a radio cheap I might try it for the increase in audio quality because I have Kenwood Excelons and as you know the rear speakers are ruined by the stock head unit.

For the Power issue go to the entertainment section of the manual and then check page 39 for the pinout of the i87 connector. If you look at it. It has IGN ON and I know that the older WRX's and Forester's don't have that in their pinouts(it could still be used though), there are some other differences in the wiring of the can bus and uart also but that one stands out.
