I get you, and can't argue the perspective.

But as one who has never been nor inclined to be of the hive mind... all generalizations and averages are dumps to be sifted through as they rarely reflect my personal reality.

People with STIs who track/race their cars are also in a similar minority... but we all know the minds that imagine their doing so are in the majority. All things are possibilities in minds... and advertising feeds their dreams, like the exploits of the tiny 2 percenters.

Imagined vs reality. Otherwise, why all the damn SUVs and no more mainstream small zippy little lightweight two doors to choose from.

I imagine a 3 door turbo Crosstrek could be a possibility.

In reality I likely wouldn't buy it. Hive minders would jump aboard as it would be the cool new thing Subaru is offering and imagine their doing so is in the majority because they frequent car sites.

So which is it? Build it they will come? Or scrap that idea entirely it's too risky catering to and feeding 2%ers dreams or possible dreams?

I don't think a higher HP option is only wanted by 2%ers. I just think Subaru can't go off offering soo many options. They are stretched as it is. That's one of MY big complaints with them. I have been harking on them for a very long time they need to have a full other factory.

However, keep a keen eye on the horizon.

Which brings me to my point: Advertisers say they don't advertise to the fringes, but to the masses of their demographic. Yet, here they are, working the fringes... That's the PC part, when they ignore their demographic and go to the fringe to force an image that barely exists.

It was a Univega. EVERYTHING was XTR. It was a $3k bike back in '97. Loved that thing. Wish I didn't trade it for a lame commuter bike. BUT I say that about a lot of my cars so operandi modus regretimus.

Nice. Yea you can't hold on to everything. Doesn't sound like a bike you're likely to find in the wild unfortunately, else I'd say go get it back. I did that for the bike I most regret losing (destroying.)

It would be great if Subaru would just come off the details already, I'm moving to Georgia next year and rather than pay them 7% on a $65k-$70k value on a Super Duty I'm probably going to buy my last car.

My recollection from magazine reports back in the day is that the EJ257 was Subaru's response to the Evo. Mitsubishi brought the Evo over in 2003, and its 271 hp and 273 lb-ft blew away the WRX's 227 hp and 217 lb-ft. Subaru released the EJ257 the very next year, in 2004.

While I am hopeful for a well-tuned FA24 in the next STI, that history concerns me because Subaru has no competition in the segment. The Evo, Focus RS, and Golf R are all dead. Additionally, with the BRZ Subaru has shown a stubborn willingness to make a car not as good as it can be.

I love the short-stroke character of the EJ in my '18 STI.

But I just wanted to point out that the 4B11T in my old Evo X had the exact same square 86 mm bore and 86 mm stroke as the FA20, and the Evo powerplant was amazing to drive. It had less torque than the FA down low, but still pulled smoothly from 1500-ish rpm in around town driving. And once the power came on, it pulled like a train past its 7000 rpm redline all the way to fuel cutoff at like 7500 rpm.

So I think it is definitely possible for Subaru to do something magical with the FA24.

That "garbage tune" comment is fascinating to me because it sounds like a phenomenon I noticed multiple times in the 12 years I owned Evos and hung out with the Evo guys. I had multiple owners of Evo VIIIs and IXs swear that the 4G63 tune had a torque problem that their tune fixed. I finally took a couple of guys for a ride in my bone stock car and asked them to point out where the torque problem was. They could not do it, and one guy declared my car to be a "factory freak".

This wall of text was beautiful. And I totally get you. I'm fortunate enough that I was able to add a 4x4 Nissan Frontier to my stable. I'm taking the truck out to Big Bend National Park later this month to do some off-roading. When I return, the STI will be snug in the garage wating for me. And after 2000 miles in the truck, the STI will feel like a rocket.

I actually wanted to trade my Evo VIII in on a Legacy GT Wagon back in 2010, but found that Subaru had stopped making them the prior year. So I bought another Evo.

It depends on whether the new STI is any good. If they screw it up, the old ones will retain their value.

When the Evo X came out, a lot of guys still thought the Evo IX MR was the "best Evo ever" so they held their values. I think today a decent Evo VIII or IX can be sold for close to its original purchase price; the Evo IX MR might be over original sticker. Even my 6-year-old Evo X got me 62% of its original purchase price when I traded it on my the WRX.

This was the plan from the beginning. If the WRX was accepted well, they'd bring the EVO and then the STi would follow the following year. There was a report (and post here) on it circa 2000 that laid out the gentlemens agreement between the two. They decided within the 1st 2 months of WRX sales... which blew through projections.

The shocker was that Subaru put in the 2.5T, just for the USDM. No one really expected that one, since the 2.0 in Japan still put out the same HP.
