News flash: If you guys want similar drivability of the twin scroll turbo on your GR/GV WRX for the cheap, simply swap out the larger VH52 for the smaller TD04 found in the 2008 WRX and then add a tune. That will give you quicker and lower rpm spool very similar to that TS in the new WRX. It will also make your GR/GV just as quick as the new WRX (low low 14s@98mph). LOL (jokes)

Since when is engine sound so unimportant?
The number of threads on this site alone that discuss engine sound, particularly in these cars, is crazy.

If not anything else, it is a marketing mistake(not an engineering one for sure), because at the end of the day, they need to sell cars, and that rumble does the job better than any poster.

just to put some context here - imagine a new amazing WRX (like the one in the NYC show)...and you hit the gas, rev up....and hear the "awesome" sound of a Civic.
Not saying that it will sound like one, but... you see what I am saying.

I know people have already said this, but. .. equal length headers? No rumble? Everything else, sure...ok. But to eliminate a sound unique to Subaru for the sake of a few horsepower that could've easily been gained somewhere else is a huge loss. It really does sound like a typical "4-Banger".

It's not that big of a loss, it still sounds a bit different than a regular 4 banger and the performance potential especially when bolting on larger turbos is insane.

My bigger question is why Subaru would skip the opportunity to put in a front mount intercooler as well? I mean, their previous strategy to have unequal length headers and the up-pipe was to mount the turbo as close as possible to the intercooler for the shortest intake tract possible. Now they've done the opposite while making the exhaust tract the shortest route possible but having an excessively long intake tract.

I do think that people love the boxer sound enough that there will be unequal length header kits for the car at some point (assuming the car sells like the old models). It actually would be helpful if going with a FMIC by offsetting the turbo and allowing the compressor to sit so you can do a 90degree elbow straight into the intercooler. Probably not worth it but I'm sure folks with try something if the story ends up being the same on the STI at least.

I have a big feeling the STI could have an FMIC. They've moved the engine back several inches by re-designing the transmission to put the front wheel drive axles in front of the clutch. That's pretty radical for subaru, much more radical than the equal length header setup. If there's equal length headers I bet there will be a bespoke inverted front facing intake with a FMIC. With the engine moved back they won't be fighting as much against front overhang weight and the performance gains of the FMIC would make for a more reliable and more powerful car.

You really can't have a twin scroll turbo with unequal length headers. People want improvement driveability and quicker spool and a smaller, twin-scroll turbo will deliver that. The Boxer rumble is gone for good. No way of getting that back with a twin-scroll.

The reason Subaru probably went with the top mount intercooler is because they didn't want to make another major change which could/would make the car look even less aggressive than the prior gen. The lack of the scoop would have really set people off and made the car look even more pedestrian.

Well they still kept a top mount in the forester even without the scoop, so I don't think it's so much about the appearance as it's just part of their design philosophy.

Yeah... I don't hate the new body style as much as some, but it definitely pales in comparison to the concept one.

Still torn between the 2015 and getting an earlier one with the hatchback option.

^^^agreed im saving judgement until i see it and drive it in person.... i personally love the exterior although i am curious to see what a hatch would look like IF they do bring it back. Also the performance improvements are amazing, 2-5k(rough numbers dont know off top of head) flat torque band??? impressive to me at least.

i think it has potential. get rid of those ugly ass fog inserts and it will look much better up front. they look really cheap, then put a nice lip on it and wheels and there you go.

So technically you cant compare it to the Lexus LFA DSG.

Equal Length Headers aren't so bad. Especially wide open they can sound quite great.

Funny though, all the people complaining of EL Headers yet then in the next breath saying how much better the EVO is over on Jalopnik. A Subaru Flat 4 will always sound better and more unique than a I4 if done right. The BRZ is a terrible example though.


Back when Subaru was making rumors of fully separating the WRX from the impreza and the STI would potentially be it's own car, I secretly wished they'd make the WRX what we now call the STI because with the BRZ in the lineup, the boy racer entry priced car niche is filled. Eliminate the 25k WRX, instead introduce an "Impreza XT" and just put in the turbo engine from the forester with the manual or CVT option on both the hatch and the sedan bodies.
THEN, you can go balls to the wall with the WRX. Give it the REAL 6MT rather than developing yet another all new 6 speed. Give it the nicer engine with 350+ hp and the STI can offer a turbocharged H6 with 400HP+ and can actually be worth over 40k.

Same development costs from Subaru's perspective just about. Same amount of new body panels, fewer transmission engineering projects and potentially the same number of all-new engines to develop. That is IF the 2015 STI is getting a new engine rather than sticking with the old EJ257.

Plenty of people would go for a regular boosted impreza with some nicer wheels, a sharper suspension and a turbo. Subaru has known that by always watering down the WRX's looks and performance to keep it soft enough for regular impreza shoppers who want a little more power and the boy racers looking for the aggressive looks. The end result is a car that doesn't perform as well as it should when being tested against the other hot-hatch 25k cars that are all FWD but purpose built with better sharper suspensions and a car that isn't as nice and anonymous as it could be when peple just want more ummph with their impreza DD.

Subaru should just commit to the fact that a properly developed AWD sportscar should always be more expensive than the FWD options out there and give us the Boosted BRZ, a properly designed and developed WRX and make the STI the halo car priced and powered to compete with the other cars in it's bracket. That means giving us 400hp+ and asking over 40k for a PROPERLY bad-ass STI.

You still didn't explain how they are turning their backs on the faithful. Do you believe in order to please people that a wrx should have 300hp and an Sti should have 400hp? I'm failing to see your comparison between this model and a 2008 wrx. Try harder. They are making slightly more hp with a smaller and going that has a twin scroll turbo with a direct injected engine. They are claiming it's the best handling wrx to date, that's another check in he new column. They are claiming up to 30 mpg's I'm sure highway. The interior is nicer then wrx's in the past. Power seats finally in an impreza is a nice step as well. Oh yeah lets not forget the 6 speed. I fail to see how any of this can be compared to an 08' model.

So now you see I made my point and have specific examples. You should try doing the same to actually have a valid point. Plus you drive an 03' wrx. This car is worlds better then your old box.

In Supraru's defense, "Subaru turning their backs on the faithful" is a completely subjective and generalized blanket statement based on your own perspective. Don't like the EJ? Get the FA. Pissed about the lack of the rumble? Get the EJ. Hate it all together? Peace the **** out. Problem solved!
