Default how to change exhaust temp sensor?

CEL code leads me to exhaust temp sensor having gone bad.

I want to change it vs doing the resistor "fix". I have helix aftermarket up/down pipe.

Anybody have any suggestions on the easiest way to change it out? I can't quite get a 14mm wrench in there w/out removing anything i don't think, without stripping the nut...

the service manuals suggest you remove a whole BUNCH of stuff which i would rather avoid if anybody has any tips.

thanks

You can't get to it without removing all kinds of things.

Just do the resistor fix especially since you don't have a CAT in your uppipe anymore. The sole purpose of that EGT probe is to monitor the health of the CAT in the UP. Now that it is gone, that probe is useless. It helps nothing so all you will do is spend money on something that does not help you and will just cause you lots of aggrivation.

Like when it melts/breaks off and flies into your turbo. Not that it will but it could.

That's probably where this one went.

I'd bet a chili dog that when he removes it, all he'll find is a stub where the sensor used to be.

That is a good possibility. If the UP was replaced, chances are the probe was removed as well.

haha! no, i'm pretty sure that didn't happen. the CEL isn't on 100***37; of the time. it just comes on occasionally, under moderate load, so the sensor must stil lbe there. If it's not needed at all I wonder why they are left in at all by the guys who tuned my car...

What is the CEL?

Have you logged EGT's?

If they left it, it's probably because they are inattentive. Many/some tuners do not care to take the time to pay attention to small things such as the EGT sensor, rear O2 sensor CEL's, etc. They may have had a valid reason though, it might be worth asking.

I had this same thing happen on my '02. I had a TurboXS catless UP and left the sensor in. About 40k later, I started getting the codes periodically and then more regularly. I changed the sensor and I was able to do it without removing much. It is a little tricky but can be done. You do have to remove the bracket on the coil paks because the wire snaps into that. Use a brake line wrench so you do not round the nut off. It may also be easier if you remove the top turbo heat shield.

They probably left it in there so as not to be bothered finding a bolt/washer to plug off the hole. Either way, it is better for you to plug the hole with a bolt/washer and do the CEL fix, it is safer. As for getting a wrench on it, since it's being replaced by whatever you decide to do you can cut the wires so you can use the angled and enclosed end of the wrench which will probably give you more options for removal. As a last resort before actually pulling the UP off, you might be able to pick up a single ratcheting wrench in that size(14mm is it?) with a flex head or maybe use a stubby?
