you could try just an axleback so you keep the stock midpipe with its resonator and it won't be too loud..although even my apexi axleback which I though was too quiet at first has some amount of drone to it. Nothing unpleasant though.

My buddy installed his $150 used CNT quad tip this weekend, and while it is both bassier and quieter than I prefer, I think I will still end up buying one in the Spring. I think I will grow to prefer the lower volume over an N1.

I have to say though, this washer mod business has been entertaining. Here's a clip from tonight's snowstorm.

That's what I'm afraid of with a really deep and poppy CBE, but I'll take my chances.

"i actually went really ghetto and took off one of the whole mufflers. i'm just experimenting with it right now. either way, when at wot it puts a big smile on my face. boxer rumble!"

^this x 10000 lol

for me, this whole thing came down to an inability to dial it in. It either sounded horrible while idling with only a little bit of good rumble under load (small gap), or it was amazing but hissed like mad in the high revs (huge gap).
yeah, the first quote is mine. the magnaflow really put me off CBEs. if I were ever to buy another CBE I would want to sit in a car with it first. youtube clips are absolutely worthless.

also the hissing -- I found when I only had a two washer space, there was lots of hissing. I'm at I think 4 now and I can't hear any hissing at all for heavy throttle / high RPM.

I'm leaning towards buying a muffler delete from nameless performance, because I'm hoping that will sound like a perfect muffler space mod / hogzaust. My only worry is the hissing; I HOPE it doesn't exist.

I think the hissing is the air literally shearing over the sharp inside edges of the flange. (Same principle as a whistle, just a different resulting sound.)

So, you should be fine with a Nameless muffler delete, as the exhaust will exit smoothly, through a widening tip.

I decided to stick with my stock CBE. I kind of like the peace & quiet on my commute. A loud exhaust at idle and putting around town gets so insanely obnoxious.

reading through this thread reminds me of why i don't use NASIOC any longer. It is filled with a bunch of douche bags (most of you on this thread) that think they know everything about cars and bash on other members because they aren't doing things "the right way." we all know how expensive these cars are, and how high monthly payments can be. did you ever think maybe this guy cant afford a proper manufactured exhaust system right away? For gods sake, you know it alls and bashers should not be on a site like this. let members do as they please and don't blow up their posts with constant negativity. In reality nothing is getting damaged by putting washers in between the axel back, and nobody is expecting performance gains, its just to hear a little Boxer rumble until a legitimate exhaust system is affordable. The majority of you guys should spend a lot less time bashing on people, and more time giving positive and helpful input (DIRECTED TOWARDS THE GUYS WHO ACTUALLY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT)

your car budget shouldn't consume 100% of your money

+1 for nameless muffler delete. I have one, it's great. NO drone at all. Sounds tough, is well made, great customer service and looks the part too!

Same. Its cost effective and sounds great. Its really tasteful and you don't have to do ridiculous things like...this thread.

I have the cat back on the way though...I decided to upgrade.

For anyone that needs it, here is a short video on how to swap the stock axle back for the axle back muffler delete.

I used 1 washer on each bolt and love it. I get a nice throaty burble at anything below 4krpm. Above 4krpm it sounds pretty normal. Perfect for my DD. Anymore washers and it's too shouty braaahhhhh. Is it the most refined? No. But the 10 pack of washers cost $1.48. I know that sounds like a lot but they are the nice washers. Maybe I don't have a hissing problem because it's a NA 2.0?
Think I'll go buy a nice mountain bike with the saved cash.

Are you aware that exhaust leaks can cause fires? That's some really hot gasses that are no longer being routed out and away from your car.

Except this is an axle - back mod. People run cut - outs or straight pipe all the time.

It won't cause a fire as the exhaust gases aren't remotely hot enough. Carbon monoxide build-up is a non-issue as well. I've tested this with an expensive CO analzyer. There's absolutely no CO making it's way into the cabin with this mod. You'll get far more CO in your car simply sitting in traffic with the windows down.

The idiocy is deliberately creating exhaust leaks on a new car just for the sake of being annoying to everyone around you.

idk I drove around with an unbolted muffler for a few mins and it seemed like a lot more fumes were coming into the car..I have no cats though so its probably more noticeable. This whole thread reminds me of civic owners drilling holes in their mufflers..although those guys are probably WRX owners by now...

lighten up, francis. this is quieter than a straight pipe.

some of us did this a decade ago... it's called having fun for nearly no money.

How is an expensive annoying exhaust better than a cheap annoying exhaust? Is that really your argument? I could understand if money was being spent for power. But if a free option achieves the same result as a cost option then why spend?
If the argument is about the quality of the sound, fine but that's totally subjective.

Friend did this for a couple of months until he melted his gas tank. Was driving a gti though.

Your choice... If you're going to do something, do it right and you won't have problems later.
