Thinking about trading a car for this, looking for some input
So I have a turbo AE86 that I am about to trade for this legacy. From what I understand this was an automatic 97 legacy outback. There is an EJ20K in it now with a 5 speed swap. From what I understand all that is left to do is merge the wiring harnesses. He has a complete engine wiring harness for the EJ20K. I am worried about the OBD1 engine going into an OBD2 car. Emissions aside, what kind of obstacles am I going to run into with this swap? I know a 35R is way too big for the engine, so I am most likely going to downgrade to a stock mounted turbo no bigger than a 16g. I and a few of my friends have completed EJ20G swaps, but not in a OBD2 car. I am worried I am going to get in way over my head with this car and its going to be another unfinished project. I just want your thoughts and opinions on whether it is a good idea to take on this project.
Here is the car: Thanks for looking.

the wiring isn't that much different with a obd-2 car if at all
if the engine is in good shape and you have the o2 sensor in, with a stock usdm DP, it will pass sniffer tests with flying colors (mine does) what ecu does it have? wondering if its a ej20k or a ej20g from a forester or wagon that came with a tdo4? either way a cheep tdo4 would be a great place to start towards getting it running i wouldn't go bigger than a vf-39 or td05 small 16.. The stock injectors are only 480cc depending on the condition of the car i would rate the whole thing worth 2500 + value of the 35r if you do decide to go big i have a power fc +datalogit +650cc injector kit for sale in the classifieds Last edited by Jaxx; 08-18-2010 at 12:36 PM. Reason: add value for the 35R |

I'm not sure what ECU it has actually. Thats one thing I did not see laying around in the car, although I didn't search much for it. I saw a 5N ECU, but I'm pretty sure thats the stock outback ECU. On going to go back and take some more detailed shots. Is there anyway to verify whether its an EJ20K or an EJ20G besides the ECU? I may have a z4 ecu laying around my house, I would assume that would work with this engine whether its an EJ20G or EJ20K, correct? I would be a little happier if its an EJ20G as I hear they are a little stronger than the EJ20Ks. I saw another wiring harness in the back seat with a fuse box attached to it so I am assuming thats its the JDM harness, but I will take some pics and post them so maybe you can help verify its what I need to get this car running. The car has a lot of original miles, around 225k, but everything seems to be almost flawless inside and out. It has the black leather seats with no rips and very little wear. He is also going to give me a set of coilovers, wheels and tires too to help boost the value. I had my AE86 priced at around $4,500. So with everything he is giving me with the car, it seems like a pretty fair trade. I would just hate to get this car and have to dump a bunch of money into it to get it running. It seems like everything is there, but you just never know what kind of surprises you will run into when you jump into a half finished project. Thanks for the input! Its much appreciated!

I thought all EJ20Gs were a coil on plug type, not coil to spark plug wire, to plug. Please correct me if I am wrong. I would really like to get the real identity of this engine. Thanks

no the later ej20gs 9/97+ look the same as the ej20ks
Ks arn't weaker they just make more power out of the box (closer the the limit) no a 4s will not run it i would guess it needs another 1500-2000 or more worth of work really depends on the ecu status |
