Have to use the car tomorrow to go to a concert and have no choice but to put them back on tomorrow mid day. Now whether I finish them in the morning or when I get home is up to you guys!

Thanks for the help Btw I put 3 medium coats of clear on after 3 medium coats of VHT's Red.
I did my wet sanding and first polish while removed, then I gave it a final polish by hand after installing them. 3 medium coats should be fine, just be careful while wet sanding, and only do the 2000 grit to ensure you don't remove too much.

I'm not saying they won't buy them, just that people will think about it based on price and because of this thread...

you have to remember that OEM tails are worth money too, you can sell your OEMs or you can sell the aftermarket tails when you get rid of the car.

On the other hand you can paint them and risk damaging them or messing up and having weird looking tails.

Obviously they won't be for everyone...

Just did this, after screwing up by adding the clear to soon I got it all figured out. My tip is to wait for 48 hours before clearing.

I did it all the same day. Depends on the color/clear combo you choose, weather conditions, etc...

I'm planning on using brake clean and acetone as suggested to clean off the old paint this weekend. Any other methods of removal to consider? I really don't want to mess them up.

Thanks guys.

just be extremely careful with the brake clean...it made little cracks in my light. You have to spray it on a cloth first and keep it off the other plastics

In my experiences working with lights, abs, and acrylic, acetone is a no no. I've always used lacquer thinner. The acetone reacts poorly with some plastics, and I got a ton of little crows feet cracks on my taillights of my old car from it. Just my .02.

Thanks for the help guys! I picked up some lacquer thinner this weekend and will be getting VHT red and Krylon clear this week. For those of you who have used Krylon, which model did you get? I'm finding clear for glass, for plastic, matte finish, etc.

Thanks again everyone!

Same boat here. Going to pull my failed overlays and paint with the VHT. I have the paint, just haven't bought the clear yet.

Krylon Fusion clear. I think the label has some plastic and metal chairs in the front.

I am insanely jealous of all of you with red tail lights. I am too nervous to mess this up since I have bad luck with aesthetic projects due to a near complete lack of artistic ability. Never done any polishing work with 2000 grit sandpaper either. Guess I am stuck admiring all of you guys' awesome red tail lights for now.

Where did you to get your tint done? I'll be looking for a place whenever my car comes in.

You most likely wont get my price as I have known the owner for a decade and have had him do 10 cars of mine. I also only have my back windows done, as I don't want to be bothered by the cops in jersey. I'd say 170 if you want all windows and 130 for the tails is probably about right.

But they are by far the best tint shop around.

Thanks for the (honest) info, dsn! I will definitely check them out.

I am out of Central Jersey but am in and out of Philly on a weekly basis.
