Mate bought a Turbo 2000 (UK spec GC8) about 15 years ago and it was a lot of fun and I was looking for something as an upgrade from my Peugeot 205 1.9 GTI.
Garage that I hat serviced my car started importing JDM cars and they was a nice black mica 1993 WRX for sale ,took it for a test drive and realised I needed AWD and a turbo in my life (plus it was more practical than the 205)

It was '02 and my son was stationed at station Portage in Houghton/Hancock Michigan, in the U.P. He told me about these little cars that Subaru made that ran like stink. They used to run a rally up there (maybe they still do) much like the WRC. The followinng year I was hunting up there when the rally was on and there were Subaru's every where. After that I test drove a WRX and as they say, the rest is history. (3 subies later) RP

I wrecked my 2004 Civic Si, and the $14k insurance gave me turned out to be enough to buy a 2005 WRX. Looking back, why I bought a Civic Si over a WRX to begin with, I have no idea...

Some douchenozzle in a ford focus totalled my first car(02 Cavalier). I had money saved up so I looked new.

I test drove:

Genesis 2.0T Coupe
Mini-S
VW GTI
MazdaSpeed3
RX-8
Lancer(dealer wouldn't put us in an Evo to test drive, lost that sale)
WRX

It was then down to the WRX and MS3. We went with the WRX because of the AWD.

My Father bought a 98 Outback in 02. Since then, he's owned 9 Subaru's since. But at about his 3rd one, I got attached. The first thing that caught my eye was the snow drive. It amazed the hell out of me when I was around 15. And now I'm here, on my 3rd Subaru!

Don't know if a thread has been made about this or not so pardon me if there is one.
We've been around the amateur motorsport world for a few years. As we've progressed, the cars we track/autocross (which are still street legal) have become less and less practical on the street. The one that used to carry the "big stuff" now has a half-cage in the back. The Houston streets are also extremely rough and no fun. So... we figured it was time for a more practical car.

With so much time in the motorsport world, we'd driven countless more practical cars. A 3 series wagon would have been nice, but they're rare around here and more expensive. Similarly, an Audi Avant would have been nice, but it's similarly expensive. A Speed3 is FWD... I can't stand the torque steer. A standard 3 would be ok, but it doesn't have the acceleration he wanted.

And Evo or an STI is too much - we want a car that's nice over the bumps here, so the stiffer suspension is a downside. While a few other cars were looked at, the WRX seemed to provide the best combination of our price point, our needs - practicality and more pleasant ride - and wants - fun to drive, entertaining, "fast enough".

I go to the Pittsburgh vintage grand prix every year with my 300zx, saw a ton of STi's there and had to have one.

I've owned over two dozen SAABs, so I like "non-mainstream, form follows function" thinking in an automobile. I tried a '04 Forester XT and sold it to go back to a '02 SAAB 9-5 wagon.

This time around, SAAB as a company is gone and the Legacy has grown up for 2013. I like that Subaru improves their cars. Really, Subaru was the only choice for me.

started working for subaru in 2001. spoiled friend in high school had a 99 RS when everyone else had hondas and mustangs. i was into mustangs but subarus grabbed my attention on the import side because they werent popular in the car scene back in the late 90's. he was the one that told everyone the wrx was coming to the US but most car people (high school kids) couldnt care less lol. man times have changed

My first Subaru was a used 93 impreza L (FWD 1.8L automatic). I bought it when I was looking for a super cheap car when I was super poor in college, doesn't really count since I havent' driven a ru since then until now. I was impressed with how well it did in the snow, granted it had no power & I put studded snows on it, but the chassis communicated very well, something I always look for in a car.
Fast forward nearly a decade and I need a "family car" so something with four doors. I absolutely hate FWD (having previously owned an SVT focus and having test driven FWD cars ranging from eco-boxes up to the MS3 and GTi) wanted a manual transmission, didn't want a "large" vehicle, I needed a tow rating, and I wanted something that was actually fun to drive; my choices were very limited.
It was either a subaru (05-09 LGT, 06-08 FXT, 06-07 WRX) or a 2007 Infiniti G37 S sedan. I think I would have enjoyed the G37 more (RWD, 6spd) but it would have cost me about 5-6k more for the Infiniti than the limited wrx wagon I picked up.

There were some other options, but the price was too high and they were bigger cars than I wanted on a daily basis (Cadillac CTS-V, Pontiac G8 GXP).

So I guess I landed in a Subaru because I'm a picky & cheap SOB, and I have a wife (hence the "family car"); if there were no wife I'd be driving a mustang, corvette, miata or S2k; obviously the wife is more important than the sheet-metal I drive to work every day.

Edit: I'm going to be screwed when it comes time to replace this car though, cars+tow ratings are only becoming more rare; not to mention the manual transmission requirement.

Owned 3 subie wagons starting with a 1987 GL wagon, through a 1995 Legacy, all went past 150k running strong when I sold them. Great for skiing, hauling and kids.

Couldn't resist the WRX -- bought a 2006 WRX new. 115,000 miles now and no consideration of selling it -- with my motor and tranny refresh I'm going to keep it a long time.

Buddy bought a new 2005 STi. Took me out for a drive after he'd stage 2'ed it. Wanted one since that day. Couldn't justify it until 2010 and wanted a sedan. Here I am.

My 99 Altima kept getting broken into because of the $4k custom system, though no one ever got anything. Finally someone tried prying my passenger door off, you could fit your entire arm in from the top, then 2 days later a big rock cracked my windshield.

I said enough is enough, started searching for cheap leases and found an 06 Impreza 2.5i for under $200/mo. I loved the car except for the A/T, lack of turbo, and crappy OBP paint.

2013 DGM WRX Hatch inbound ~8 days.

Sorry to hear that. My father was in the Navy and stationed there. They were told at the time to avoid RK. They didn't have Subaru at the time, but I just stopped by there on a trip back there(to see mom) during Christmas and saw that things hadn't changed. The sales person was clueless when I asked to see an Outback with the SAP package.

Anyway, my father(in the Navy) was getting stationed in Iceland back in 1980. He wanted to take a car over instead of trying to get one there. He heard of a family station wagon that had 4WD and was being used by the U.S. Ski team. We went down to the dealer(that I now work at) and test drove. He took it into a field(with my mother screaming) and got it stuck in 2WD. So, he pulled the 4WD lever and it came out as if it wasn't stuck. SOLD!!! We have had one in the family ever since. Ended up NOT going to Iceland, but instead, went to Japan. Didn't take that car. Had a couple Subies over there. I learned to drive on the right side of the car at 9 years old in a Subaru Sambar minivan. Came back to the states and got an '85 GL wagon 4WD that I "officially" learned to drive on. He got sent back to Japan in '90 and I was 16. He found an '85 Justy GL 4WD and that is what I spent my first 2 driving years in. More story after that, but I can see ya'll are alseep. Needless to say, I have never owned anything but a Subaru as I have not found anything that can sway me away.

Current list
Me 05 Turbo Baja
Wife 09 WRX(88K trouble free miles)
Dad 09 Forester
Mom 06 Forester
Sis 06 Forester
Aunt 10 Forester
Granny 08 Tribeca

Not counting the fellow firefighters I've convinced to get one(and the ones I didn't have to).

I started working at a jeep dealership parts dept that also did subaru back in '97. Then the 2.5 rs came out and I had to have one. I bought one brand new 99 2dr RS white with a 5spd. Best car I have ever owned I had it for 3 1/2 years and put 130,000 miles on it. Fast foward 16 years I'm now a parts manager for a subaru dealership and now own a 06 wrx limited wagon. I will probably always have a subie. Next one probably STI but who knows.

Saw a brand new 2001 white 2.5RS 2 door 5 speed on the showroom floor at the Subaru Dealership and just about talked myself into buying it. It was badass looking. But I went home. A friend of mine actually bought it instead. No biggy. I then found out that the WRX was due in any day. I then waited and waited. I bought the first 2002 Aspen White WRX 5speed sedan that arrived. I was HOOKED.

i got a 2007 vw rabbit awhile back, then traded it on a 2008 gti. traded that in for a routan (so i could fit a motorcycle inside to take to track days) and HATED it. was all set to get another gti, but kept looking at my neighbor's 2010 wrb wrx 5-door and wondered why i never considered one. he let me take it for a drive one day and i started looking at the 2013s the very next day.

i promised myself i'd never fall in love with a car ever again, so i will be trading it in after 2-3 years, but if i like this one still, i'll probably get another. maybe the 2016 wrx will be on my short list?

I went to trade in my old Scion and there was only one WRX in the parking lot, and they haven't had one in a while so I swooped it up before another person was going to take it.

Was looking for:
1) Sedan/More "Grown Up" (than a Toyota Matrix)
2) Sporty
3) Standard
4) 25-30k

Not a lot of options with those requirements. Over 30k you've got the Audi's ($ maintenance), Infinity G, Evo X, R32... Around or below the WRX you've got the GTI, Si... The WRX really is a unique car at it's price point, there's nothing else that's quite like it.

Default An old Ad

There was an old tv ad for Michelin Tires i think, back when the WRC STI was the GD body. How it went was there was a guy walking along a muddy road somewhere in the middle of nowhere while carrying a white board. He then just stops and stands around waiting for something and then when he saw a car approaching, he holds the board up but theres nothing on it, it was totally blank. Then the car zooms by and splatters him and the board with mud. Turns out he was waiting for an "autograph" in the form of the mud splatter. Thats when the camera shows the WRC STI and thats what did it for me.

As a kid, whether it be the first gran turismo, need for speed, whatever, I would always drive the Subaru. I never knew why I did, just did. My father, at the time was a owner of a 2wd Tundra. His job required him to drive very often and sometimes very far; and in northern Arizona it snows, so he would have to drive through that and he was afraid the Tundra would get stuck. He loves to weave traffic and the tundra was too big.

I always told him to buy an STi and sometimes we would go look at them back in 2005. It took him 2 years, a couple test drives, many videos and research on the STi for him to finally say that he wanted one. When the time came for him to go out and buy one, before the hatchback came out, there were two silver ones left on the lot.

He called around to see if any dealer had white and nobody did and the dealership that had one wanted almost 7k more than the dealership trying to get rid of the silver ones. So he bought the silver one that he drove for three years and put on 90k miles.

Though he loved the car so much, it became that time for him to get a new car, but I couldn't let it go, so I picked up the payments of it, and he bought a 2011 WRB STi limited. My mom is hopefully selling her car for a BRZ. We love Subarus.

I was raised on muscle cars my whole life with my family being V8 Ford Mustang fans (I still am). So my first car in high school was a 1988 Mustang GT of course. I loved that car. My friend in high schools parents bought him a brand new STi in 2004 and he gave me a ride in it. Ever since that day I was immediately sold on 4 cyl turbo AWD cars. I ended up picking up an 03 evo in 2006 and made that car pretty quick. I had to sell it in 2010 for a down payment on my house and missed the AWD turbo cars so much. Once I got promoted at work in 2011 I started saving/looking at 2011 STi. I ended up picking up a slightly used 2011 LR STi almost a year ago and absolutely love it. I am glad to be back in an AWD turbo car again.
