Question STi oil change procedure question - Car's on the ramps now!

Hi all,

I need help. I've got my STi up on ramps as I type. I want to change the oil myself, as I'm tired of not being able to get it done conveniently at the local Subaru dealership. I used to change the oil on my 2002 WRX... it was so easy.

Here's my question... How do I get that damned plastic undercover off my STi so I can get to the oil filter. They conveniently put a cut-out for access to the oil plug... but not the oil filter.

I found two bolts at the back end of the undercover and took them out. The rest of the undercover is connected to the car via some kind of fastener. I can't figure out how to get them out.

I searched the entire forum for info on this to no avail.

HELP!! Car's up on the ramps and ready to go!

Thanks! Mike

You use a small screwdriver to pop the center part of the fastener up (use the slots in the outer part to get under it), that releases it and you can pull it out. When putting them back in, leave the center pin out (released) or remove it altogether, push the outer part into the hole then push the center in all the way to lock it.

Mulder,

Thanks!! I would have cussed a lot more trying to figure that out without your help. Gotta love these online groups... It took 3 minutes to get an answer. How cool is that??

Is there a jack point in the front of the car? I can't seem to find any. Where should I jack the car up for an oil change if I only have a floor jack? This is for a WRX, but I think it's the same as the STI. Thanks.

Jack it up one side at a time using the jack points on the sides, and insert jack stands. Or alternately you can get some ramps and drive it up on those to get sufficient room underneath.
Under no circumstances get under the car if it's only supported by a jack, it must be on stands or ramps.

Yes, I meant I have jack stands after jacking it up too. Just wondering there was a jack point up front like some Honda cars. Thanks.

There is a front jacking point directly behind the oil pan at the center of the crossmember. Just make sure you're not jacking on the oil pan itself.

i just changed the oil in my 04 wrx. yeah that oil filter is kind of out of reach. but i was able to change it without taking out that plastic shield thing. the oil filter dripped a little on the plastic shield thing but that's ok. there wasn't too much mess since i had an old rag handy.
