Shop Relations and Deadlines
Keep getting the go around about the deadline of my build, but don't want to step on toes or disgruntle the shop.
Time line: Car dropped off: OCT 11th (dead line at that time was first full week of NOV and the latest! Second week of NOV. Visited: OCT 25th all parts were in, engine was pulled, and owner (engine builder) said that everything should be done the first week of NOV. Checked in: NOV 14th (second week of nov) engine has not yet been built, but the shop said this week was wide open and didn't see why my car shouldn't be done before thanksgiving. Check in: Touched based this week, engine still isnt build but im "top of the list" and should have my car back now be the end of Next week (last week of NOV) Im starting to get frustrated because I haven't been called to be updated once nor received any pics like promised. How would you guys handle this scenario?

time to give them a hard deadline. sounds like they just dont care and cant be bothered to do your work. how can they say they have a full week wide open and then not even start on your engine build.
go somewhere that will actually do the work when you want it done. Last edited by legacy2005; 11-21-2017 at 02:22 PM. |

Exactly and I just don't want to lose my cool or even get to that point and have the shop not put 100% into the build and tune.
Side note: I can see what goes on at the shop daily via numerous social media accounts so I know there is valuable time that could be spent working on customers cars. |

You say they are building your engine.
What exactly do you mean by that? Is this a full rebuild of your current motor? Expecting 5 - 6 weeks for a shop to completely rebuild your motor is not out of the ordinary If that is what being done, what you don't see is any machine shop work that has to be done, which typically means engine block, heads, etc. would need to be shipped out, worked on, and then shipped back. The builder, and you, are at the mercy of the machine shop if this is really what is going on. Have you asked specific questions of the builder as to why this is taking longer that he originally stated? |

They received he decked heads back from the machine shop on the 25th when I visited the shop ~3.5 weeks ago .
Yes this is a full build, new case halves w/forged internals ect. |

I would also factor in the price they quoted and if they gave you a really good deal. Who knows, maybe they didn't think you're in a much of a rush so they're bumping you down the list to take on more profitable projects?
If I were you I'd gently ask an ETA on specific steps of the build and if there are any foreseen delays. Also check in with them regularly on the status of things. You know, approach it like project management. I don't think I'd give them a hard deadline considering they already have the car torn apart since you can't easily go somewhere else. Not a good idea to rush something that requires meticulous attention to detail... |

Make sure you get specific answers, not just another run around. Just be polite, but firm. Remember, they are still putting your motor together. Pissing them off now would be like pissing off the Chef at your restaurant. You don't won't to know what they could be doing to your food if you did piss them off. |

Thats the time frame the shop expressed in person. 1 day to build and 1 to install.

Are you saying that when you originally talked with this shop that they told you it would only take 1 day to build the motor and only 1 day to install the motor?
I have to presume that's 1 day to build after they received all necessary parts and the engine/heads back from the machine shop. It's going to take longer that that. Something's clearly not right here. |

I've del with this personally in the past month.
Long block drop off: June 22 Long block pick-up: Nov 21 I was not happy with the consistent running around and getting the same old answers; we just sent out the heads, we are assembling the heads, seating valves, sorry my phone is down. The best thing I did was visit the builder face to face and explain to him why I chose him and not a bigger shop (i have a hybrid build). Explain to you builder a define time frame you want to pick it up, no if, and's or buts. And get it across that if he wants the full price for his services, he must have it done in time. Anyone with a responsible head on his shoulders will get his shot done. Looking back on my personal experience I would have rather spent $1,000 more and 3 months less to go buy a ej207 and do it myself and had larger HP gains to my liking. If you loose your cool you've already become that F* guy. Stay cool and be the bigger man. |

I mean, it's not an uncommon sentiment for engine shops to call out the old "1k mile" break-in as unnecessary. Most of the cam and piston ring wear-in happens well, well before that. One could easily make the argument that due to the dyno time, most engines leave the factory already broken in. Rest assured, even with 0 miles on the ODO, your engine has been run (and run hard) before you took delivery. |

So now what? Hope to god that there are no issues after the warranty is up? or Disregard their break in procedures?

If it were mine I wouldn't want them taking it up to high rpm that fresh. There's really no benefit and only potential problems to going anywhere near peak rpm on something new. |

Yup, the way it was explained there is no break in tune. They run it on the dyno before tuning and I will pick the car up with the final tune and already "broke-in."

I would be concerned if it was me. Suggest you talk with your tuner and ask why they do it that way and express your concerns about long term issues with such a fast break-in procedure. Remember, this is YOUR motor. What warranty are they giving you? |
