you are extremely lucky,...no cats is a $5000 epa fine, not to mention you are an ******* for driving a stinky ass car for no good reason. the up-pipe they proably won't notice unless you are a dick to the guy...the tune/turbo/injectors don't really matter as long as you have your turbo heat shield on unless you are running super rich. they will also look at seat belts, seats, headlights, third brake light, horn function, etc...if you have blue HID's, window tint, tinted lights, non-stock seatbelts, tire tread-depth, etc...they can reject you

I'd get it fixed. Because otherwise you'll have to get the car smogged at a STAR station. They will be a lot more thorough which will make getting a pass on it more of a headache.

i just went to a reff station today in LA. they are quite anal there. "modified exhaust ticket". To pass, you must clear a visual test and a sound test. 95db* max
I was hoping they would only do a sound test and i would be on my merry way, but no... they looked at everything and right away noticed my catless tbe. Failed. I did pass the sound test, 94.8dbs at 4500rpm... (he rev'd it way above the req'd "half of the rated rpm" which should have been like 3200rpm ish). i have a greddy sp2 btw. so it looks like the only way for me to pass is to put the stocker back on, and yadda yadda... which blows... |

^ An aftermarket catted down pipe is just as illegal as a catless one. You have tampered with/removed federally mandated smog equipment. So if you are that worried about it don't touch your stock DP.

However, technically you are correct about not tampering with oem smog equipment for full 100% compliance. My point is, if you are going to mod, do it smart. |

Get the ticket signed off for exhaust and pay state reff ticket be done with it and be on your way. You might get lucky and the clerk will think the state reff got signed off and it'll be like your just paying your 250 fix it ticket instead of paying the state reff ticket fine

I'm serriously thinking about buying a 2003 WRX out of state. It has a conservative tune by COBB Surgline in Portland. It has the following mods:
Cobb Intake Cobb Up Pipe Cobb BPV Tial 44mm Ewg Invidia Downpipe (I dunno id it's catted or not) JNA Performance Catback Agency Power UEL Header. VF39 Turbo STi Intercooler ***Question, if i buy a used stock downpipe, do I need to tune the car back to stock map? If so, how on earth do i do that? I just want to pass smog for the least amount of hastle 'cause the car is from out of state.**** |
