Default The official music album review thread.

Artist: Avenged Sevenfold
Album: City of Evil
Genre: Metal
Rating: 9 / 10

This album kicks all manner of ass. I've been listening to it for about a month now and still can't get enough of it. It shows incredible musicianship with leanings toward "Appetite for Destruction" like lead guitar. Each song features catchy hooks and an average song legth of 6 min 41 seconds! Even with the length of the songs, you never find yourself getting bored, each song evolves as it progresses, thus shunning completely the canned music scene that seems to permeate radio waves today. Bottom line metalheads, this is new old school that hits you with emotions from back when headbanging was pure.

So let me get this right...

What to do
Pick a CD, any CD, and review it?

I like this game...I'll have to play more tomorrow.

this is going to be a bitch to find reviews if a search for a certain band brings up some huge multiple page thread.

Artist: The Riverboat Gamblers
Album: Something to Crow About, Riverboat Gamblers, and Backsides
Genre: Punk? Good-Times Rock-N-Roll? Garage Band?
Rating: 9/10

this band is basically a good-times garageband who plays punkish rock and roll. super lo-fi sounding recording (vocals occasionally overpower mics, you can hear the mic drums fall off the set from time to time). It makes for a super-warm sound... plus it doesn't hurt that its next to impossible not to tap your foot along. Unlike most "punk" (particularily the lo-fi garage style), this one has a lead guitar playing something most rednecks would twiddle their fingers in the air for the majority of most of the songs. the lyrics are better than most too (when you can understand them). not always the deepest, but entertaining none-the-less. "i wanna know your name and wanna get to know your mind, well i asked all my friends about you to find out if your my kind, well i want to let you know that i'm a real cool guy that wants to catch your eye". Another songs the only words I can understand are the chorus... "ooh yah, ooh yah, ooh yah, oooh yah" and "i think i'm wonderful, ooooOOOOoo".

songs to sample (if you can find them): cut-cut-cut-cut, ooh yeah, no no the girlfriend, save you, whatever whatever, out of my way

Artist: The Reverend Horton Heat
Album:The Full Custom Gospel Sounds
Genre:Rockabilly
Rating:7/10

It's hard to classify this album. TRHH is a shock to the system if you don't know thier sound, but it's always a satisfying one. This album has great lyrics and really cool twangin' riffs. The songs are well constructed musically and lyrically, with a good proportion of both that doesn't drown out either; which is common with Butthole Surfers, The Jesus Lizard, and others that could potentially get thrown in with this band. To listen to the CD in it's entirety get a little grating by the end, thus making it a hard listen from beginning to end, buyt how can you go wrong with songs touting, "bales of cocaine fallin' from a flyin' plane, don't know who it was, but I'll thank 'em just the same."
