EJ22T / EJ207 hybrid timing belt question
I'm putting together a v9 EJ207 with EJ22T block and I noticed there's an additional idler pulley on the EJ207 on the upper driver side beside the tensioner. It looks like it adds a little more wrap to the driver side intake cam sprocket.
There's no bolt hole in the EJ22T block to add it. Is it ok to run without this? I think without it the intake cam would be off a degree or two. Does anyone make a conversion bracket to add it? Here's a pic of the newer setup.

The bracket the tensioner (and the small pulley) bolts to will swap between the blocks, it is held on by three bolts. The purpose of the extra pulley isn’t to introduce more wrap but to make up the difference in thickness between the phase 1 (thick) and phase 2 (thin) head gaskets while still using a timing belt with the same length and number of teeth. The stock EJ22T tensioner is of a completely different design than the phase 2 setup you have pictured. You will need the setup you have pictured as the tensioner bracket for DOHC equipped engines also has an extra ear for the inner timing belt cover.
Weather you use the extra pulley or not really depends on what head gasket you use, which is also dependent on what pistons you use in the block. The stock EJ22T pistons protrude above the deck about 0.3mm, so be careful. Most of this has been covered over and over here on NASIOC, so please take the time to read carefully, HTH, Kaz |
