Corrected my earlier post - I had an '82 Supra, not '92. It had a whopping 145 hp! (then the '83 went to 155hp).

All speculation:

I believe the Impreza is just going to be called the "Impreza".

The WRX and STI are dropping the Impreza badging. They are going to be modeled as the Subaru WRX and Subaru STI.

They will alter the styling so they do no look like beefed up imprezas.

That's my $5 bet.

If they do that, then we'll never get a Forester STI, Legacy STI, or Tribeca STI. Not that we ever would have anyway...

Slight possibility we'll get Ts models though.

If they can't get 35 MPG then you're right, you won't be getting those STis.

Naming it "Subaru WRX" and "Subaru WRX STI" would keep the possibility of other STI models. Just drop "Impreza" from the name, as that's where the models seem to be diverging. STI would still be a trim of WRX.

That seems more reasonable than just calling the car an "STI". You don't see Benz making a car just called "AMG". It's (for all practical purposes) a trim level.

I've almost given up on getting info about the 2012 Impreza from this site, because I'm unwilling to wade through a 91 page thread of mostly useless banter. I wish the mods would allow new threads when new info comes out.

I know they tend to change some lines, but they look very similar in all the pictures people have posted of concept vs real. If Subaru keeps making the Impreza/WRX/STi look more and more like this:

http://www.automobilemag.com/auto_sh...ook/index.html

Then I'm leaving Subaru after my 07 dies (thankfully that's another 8+ years!). What happened to the rally inspired roots? In my opinion, there aren't any anymore. The '11 WRX/Sti is awesome, but the base impreza is getting way too much attention from grandma. Don't know what I'll do for awd after that.

My unwarranted opinion:

Impreza- as advertised sedan/wagon, sub-$20k

WRX- 2.0 (or smaller) ~250hp turbo. M/R mechanical LSD's, 6MT, light (sub-3000lb) rally-ready base model, upscale trims for those who want it, sedan/wagon on all trims, sub-$23k for base

WRX STi- halo car, all tech and wizardry, DCCD/torque vectoring/wide-body madness, 2.5T 325+hp, sedan only for torsional rigidity

XV/OBS- same as concept, but with available 6MT/2.0T/diesel, 16" wheels for beefier A/T tires, sub-$20k for NA, sub-$23K for 2.0T/diesel, wagon only (obviously)

As a lifted GD sedan owner, the 2.0T/diesel XV/OBS would without a doubt get my $$$. Ya hear me, SOA? Again, pipe dreams

BTW, I really like the new wagon body style much better than the 08-11 five door. It looks more like a real wagon than a 2-bubble hatch.

I'm not sure which part of the sedan makes you think it has more torsional rigidity... but unless they do away with the rear fold-down seats and install cross-bracing there, torsional rigidity will actually be better in a hatch/wagon than a sedan thanks to more structural rings (D-pillar/hatch frame).

The GD sedan had this advantage over the GD wagon.. but more importantly the Chapman struts on the old car were not supported laterally on the wagon which is why rear strut braces were so popular. The new cars do without rear struts so all lateral forces are transmitted directly into the rear floor rather than the middle of the vertical bracing.

Edit: That's not to say if they built it as a sedan only that they couldn't brace it and make it a better performer.

I think it's also the point of having to READ all the posts in those 91 pages. I agree. If I leave for 2 days, I have a lot of reading to do to catch up and a lot of times it is just nothing.

Not that I am complaining since I contribute to that on occasion. That is what my view of a forum is. People talking. It can get out of hand sometimes, but oh well.

...and knowing is half the battle. Still thinking of the hatch as a big wobbly cavern. Thanks for the enlightenment.

The order form for the WRX/STi is apparently now available. The only key change is the new Pioneer Media System is an available option. Does anyone know what the model number of that system might be?

Oh - and price sheets were included (I have not seen them) so I expect to get pricing from my dealer ASAP.

Just checked with a dealer, and that info is not up on the dealer access site yet (Subarunet.com). Where did you get it from?

If I knew how to link to a file, I would post it up. Otherwise go to the iwsti.com website and look for the "2012's are official" thread in their news & rumors section to see the shot. It's possible that I have been duped, but it looks legit. Can anyone verify that the two signatures at the bottom are really the VP and director at Subaru?
