JC Sports Torque Chip, MY98/99?
Heya folks....
I was just reading through the "speed limiter" post ( here ), and I've seen alot of talk about the JC Sports Torque Chip I and II for the 98/99s. Who's running these, and does it make that big of a power difference?

With mods like Intake/Exhaust/Headers etc... it optimizes your ECU into learning the best fuel/power curve for the car. I have the TC1 (modified version) on my '98L, and will have the TC2 on my '99GT soon

I beleive they are around $200, and require soldering into the wiring harness. I spoke to JC about these and they sound pretty good. They enrich 6% across the board fuel wise, and the rest is really untouched. But for us '99 guys thats an easy way to cure high end lean problems with tube style intkaes.

Also ignition timing is optimized. Give the guys @ JC Sports a shout... talk w/ Kevin 720-898-0948. or you could email them. The TC2 is ~ $250USD

Which one is better for me? The TC 1 or TC 2? I've heard that, if you plan to add a turbo, get the TC2. While I want a turbo, I surely don't see one for a few more years.
My extent on mods will be Intake (waitin on Larry or Cobb for the 98), Exhaust (toying with the idea of the MRT if it's CARB legal), then whatever carb legal mods I can do. I might do nitrous later down the road, but I need to get my base done first. |

If you're staying N/A for awhile, just get the TC1... otherwise, you can get the TC2 and just wait till you go turbo.

The Torque Chip II is the only one they make now, for $250. I thought they originally planned to sell the TC1 for $250 and TC2 for $350, but they dropped the price so my understanding is the TC1 is discontinued.
For MY00+ turbo's it includes the optional MAP voltage clamp, but I don't know if that feature costs extra. It will help flatten the torque curve of any modified or stock impreza, and installs with 10 wires going in and out. I used to run my turbo with an AFC that was only good for midrange enrichment (since I had a plain MAP voltage clamp), and was it up to +18% between 3K - 4K rpm, and only +11% at 2K and at 5K rpm for best acceleration. The TCII replaced the AFC and the car has lost NO midrange power at all. Hope this helps, Larry www.ImprezaRS.com [edit] NOTE above says any impreza, I am not sure sure if it works on the auto tranny suabru yet, but does work with MAF and MAP models. Larry - have you run this without the turbo? Well, what I'm asking is, is it worth it for me to get it, based on my mods/future mods? The exhaust and full intake will be done before the summer.
Whatcha think? OT - any word yet on the adapters? |

When I talked to them 3 weeks ago they told me both the Torque Chip 1 and 2 were still for sale, and yes, both were $250 (I found my notes).....TC1 is for NA applications while the TC2 is for forced induction.

I just spoke to them today and asked them if it worked well with a MY98, they said it works very well. I had them throw one in with my turbo kit. It is supposed to go out today so I will post how it goes with it tomorrow.

Does the TCII work for Legacy...I have a MY99 2.5 GT limited with (A/T)...A S-AFC doesn't work in my car because the ECU has two banks of slots not three displayed in the diagram from Apexi...So if it will work, who has the ECU diagram for my car to make it work...If need be I can take it out and take a pic of it to show you guys...even though it's a pain!!!
Thanks for your insight, CRAZY KEN |

I don't have all the answers, especially about the legacy applications - email [email protected] and see. Apparently the only diff between the TC1 and TCII is the MAP voltage clamp and extra enrichment setting on the TCII for turbos.
It is easy to install, as I believe it comes with a description of what wire to connect where, taped to the side of the box. According to the inventor that I spoke with, it is supposed to yield as much as 12ft lbs from an NA car, dyno tested. Larry www.ImprezaRS.com |

It would be an easier solution as compared to the SAFC( fool proof as there is no user input), but as for tunning potential the SAFC is MUCH more versatile.

Actually the torque chip allows for more finite adjustments in both fuel and ignition. This is b/c it's constantly monitoring the different sensors. The AFC will only control fuel in increments, not over the whole band in minute increments.

Yes the TC's work on the Legacys (I have them on mine). As well, TC2 works on Autos, I have a modified version of the TC1 on my '98 Legacy L auto.

hacman - I have ridden in Gary's car (burninrubber) before and after the TC1, and his car performs better now. Not like a 5 psi turbo though

Larry, where do you putthe box it self in the car once you have hooked up the wires? I am supposed to get mine tomorrow. Is it fairly easy to install?

I have read on the board that using these "chips" on a MY00+ it is pointless because the ECU "relearns". Will i still see gains even if i have to reset the ECU every 3 weeks or so??
Thanks, ~Frank |
