Track 1/4 mile results
Sorry I didn't include these before. I'll include a few of the results. These are from Infineon Raceway (aka. Sears Point). It is pretty close to sea level. These are for my 2004 Subaru Forester 2.5 XT Manual. 5200 miles on the clock.
1st Run: 18:04 10 Sept 2003 88 F 41% Relative Humidity 30.15 Absolute Barometer Reaction: .562 60 Ft: 2.071 330 Ft: 6.145 1/8 Mile: 9.536 @ 72.63 MPH 1000 Ft: 12.471 1/4 Mile: 14.983 @ 89.52 MPH 6th Run: 21:06 10 Sept 2003 (no track conditions were printed, though my car's thermometer said 76F) Reaction: .913 (yuck) 60 Ft: 2.026 330 Ft: 5.987 1/8 Mile: 9.351 @ 73.21 1000 Ft: 12.264 1/4 Mile: 14.754 @ 90.36 Weight: Nothing was taken out. I had my laptop, camcorder, GPS, and normal assortment of items in the care (tie down straps, spare tire, a few blankets). The only thing I took out were some dog toys in the back so they wouldn't rattle around. Fuel level was 1/4 tank. Tire Pressure: 32 psi on all four tires. My goal for this first time out was to see how fast the Forester is as I drive it down the road, with the exception of having the dogs with me. Next time I may fool around with the tire pressure if I go out before I do any mods.

I know this is alittle off subject but i have some promising news. I have been g-teching my forester and generally run about a 6.3 0-60. I have never run lower than 6.6. The great thing is, my car is an automatic premium and i don't do any special launching at all. Eventually i will try to brake torque and try to get a faster launch. Not to bad for not even trying hard.

Is that 1/4 mile typical for the XT, I thought I heard that it was supposed to be slightly faster. Either way, nice run!!!

Don't take this the wrong way but do you know how to launch properly ? I'm just curious to see if these results are from the "average" driver or a seasoned drag racer. Post launch RPMS's shift points if you got 'em !

My best launch was probably with a 2500 RPM start. Any suggestions or pointers on how to launch better would be appricated. |

Launching
Launching a 4wd vehicle is a violent and awesome thing.
To get the fastest times you have to rev it pretty high and then do a very-quick clutch release. Be careful! I've heard the tranny (same as WRX) isn't as strong as some. In my 95 Mitsu Eclipse, because of the mods I'd done (lighter flywheel and bigger turbo), there was a narrow window between bogging and spinning the tires. I would launch with a 6000 rpm stutter box, which would produce 10 psi on the line. I was able to get low 1.8 to high 1.7 60 foot times. Without a stutterbox, some people will hold the rpms at 2000 rpm or so, then when the lights start turning, they will floor it. This not only raises your RPMs, but also loads the engine and can produce some positive boost. If you bog, then start at a higher rpm. If you spin, then a lower one. In all this, you want your clutch to save your tranny. Again, it's a fine line. If you slip it too much, you burn your clutch. Not enough, bog or break. An all out awd launch is a beautiful thing. But it can also be ugly. If you have an automatic (I forget), then never mind all of this. Mark. |

I certainly don't know how to launch an AWD car, I just know the launch can make a huge difference in times. Last time I dragged I owned a Supra Turbo, I'd hold the RPM's @ 6000 and just drop the clutch and floor it. Lil wheelspin as I built boost and I'd rocket off. Those trannies are solid past 600 HP .

Just wait
Just wait until Easystreet Motorsports finishes with their Forester XT given to them by SOA to tune.
If it's anything like the turbo Baja, then 300+ WHP will take it down the track at dizzying speeds. |

My brothers XT smokes my WRX
I work for Subaru, so I have been hooking up my brother with parts for his XT.
So far he has STi intercooler, STi air filter, STi carbon fiber hood scoop, upgraded air diffuser, Aluminum Y pipe, turbo back Random Technologies, and he replaced all of the stock plastic toobing with ceramic.... Anyways I ran a 14 flat 1/4 at Irwindale in my slightly modified 03 WRX and he can smoke me even without launching. You do the math. Mitch |
