Default 04-05 STI Headlights in 04-05 WRX - Need Relay?

I bought a wire harness from chaiofangimports.com so I can use 04 STI headlights in my 05 WRX and it works great, however I was reading that you need a relay or else you can cause serious damage to fuse boxes, ecu, etc. Or is the WRX Wiring good enough and I don't need a relay?

The important thing is to have the ballasts directly grounded and NOT use the factory switched ground from the original low beams.

^^ Yea the wire harness I bought from him directly grounds to the fender. So I should be okay? No relays needed?

I haven't looked at one of those harnesses so be sure that the ground is actually connected right to the ballast. As long as it is, you're good. A relay certainly won't hurt if you want to add one, but isn't absolutely necessary. The factory headlight power circuits should support the HIDs, I've had no problem with this in the 02.

How long have you been runing HID system on ur 02 on stock wires? I have ran S2000 and A6 ECE on my old car on my stock wiring, but really didn't have any problems.

Almost 4 years. Not all stock wiring, just the factory headlight power. The ballasts are directly grounded. The factory power circuits are adequate since each side has its own feed with a separate fuse and relay, it's the switched ground wiring that isn't up to the task of powering HIDs.

I have no additional relays. Not saying that's how you should do it, but that's what I did.

I also have several years experience running the 04 STi HIDs on both my 04 and 05 WRX. I directly grounded the ballasts and used the existing positive power wires. No problems at all. IIRC, the power supply routing is the same for both the STi and WRX, so there is a relay and 15A fuse for the power to each headlight. I figured if Subaru used the same power supply, so would I.

There's relays already in the circuit, and 15A fuses. Having the fender ground is the most important thing... and I've got that covered.

If the ballast is grounded directly to the fender, how does the switched ground from the car turn the light on and off? Is it connected to some other wire on the ballast?

It doesn't, and it doesn't need to. The headlight power is switched when you turn the headlight switch on and off, and that will control the power to the HIDs.
