Hey look at this Justy a fancy turbo RS! Subaru had to spread costs of that badge out somehow.

But seriously. Why not do a turbo RS hatchback here? Missed opportunity in the end days of petrol cars.

Oh. I've always agreed on "why don't we get....." with everyone on here. I was like "why why why" when I visited a few dealerships in Japan seeing soooooooooooooooo much that we don't get over here.

Japan? Australia is getting a WRX wagon. With a manual. Japan doesn't get that. Why is Australia somehow getting bespoke products while the US sits out?

Also instead of a Legacy XT, Canada gets a Legacy GT that combines US XT Sport and XT Limited.

They must've figured that Americans would've side-eyed a Legacy GT without a manual.

Where'd you see that the Sportwagen is getting a manual?

No manual, CVT only. It's essentially just a rebranded levorg.

To be fair, that's all it ever was (next part not aimed at you, just in general): Legacy wagon buyers wanted a new Legacy, and Subaru saw an opportunity to sell a WRX wagon as a replacement. Only Americans are confused by this. I wish Americans purchased wagons when they were more prevalent, but they steadily decreased in popularity in favor of CUVs/SUVs. Australia still likes wagons, so they get their Levorg rebadged as a WRX sportwagen.

I can't deny that I was part of the decline of wagons. I had an opportunity to purchase a Legacy wagon or a Forester XT, and I went with the Forester XT because I knew it was basically a GD WRX and there was lots of support for it. Little did I know that the GV/GR WRX/STI would just be restructured Legacy sedans and that very few enthusiasts at that time would familiarize themselves with the "new" chassis. At least back in Alaska, once the GD chassis was done then the enthusiasm for Subaru waned quite a bit. I was somewhat on my own after I sold the Forester XT for a 2011 WRX. Fortunately for me the BRZ was a mix of Legacy/WRX/STI from GD to GV and I enjoyed modding that using parts from several generations of Subies.

The WRX Sportswagon will have the FA24 and the Levorg gets the CB18. I see now Subaru dropped the manual on the 11th hour like they did with the STI (hadn't paid attention since the initial report that it would get a manual). Bummer, but they would likely do the same with a turbo Impreza hatchback.

Regardless, they get a more functional WRX wagon with the FA24. Something both Japan and the US don't get. Weird.

Count me in as hoping beyond hope for the Levorg/WRX Sportwagon with at least the 1.8T and initially disappointed with this but at 2nd glance this doesn't strike me as a bad car.

Super stiff chassis, more responsive AWD, torque (brake) vectoring, torque is available 700rpm sooner, no cladding, better seats and interior though I could do without the tablet instead of switches. I'm a wagon guy and with even the Germans raising their fine performance estates to CUV height (not that I could afford the very desirable screaming AMG and RS from abroad) there really isn't any to be had so a sporty hatchback is what's left. I drive the 5-speed bugeyes in SoCa traffic without thinking about it and my knees are still fine so the CVT doesn't excite me but nor does it completely count it out - I've driven Subaru CVTs and when not really romping on it they are mostly fine.

I was lucky to actually go on a week long road trip driving a brand new 1999 Rally Blue original Impreza RS (friend owned a dealership) and its solid, planted feel and quirky looks are what sold me on the brand but it was no screamer with its (I think) 165 hp. This similar weight with much stiffer platform seems like it has some promise - again, I'm 61 so I'm not looking for a track car these days.

I'll definitely be watching the reviews and test drive one to see if this is the vehicle to bring me into the modern age and sell my all original bugeyes to a kid to mod to his or her hearts delight.

Stay tuned.

Interesting you mention weight. It's 300+lbs heavier without much of the HP bump.

The '00 2.5RS (Manual) was 2810lbs, Auto was 2840 iirc (may had been north of 2900). The 2023 Sport Hatch CVT is 3145lbs, and that has the 2.0L. Going to add at least 40-50lbs over the nose for that extra 1/2L.

350lbs for 20 more HP? Hope the gearing in the CVT makes up for it.

Don't think it will matter anyway. It's a larger car and everyone will complain it's a "boat" and not as "raw" as the old one. I'll be highly surprised of any positive comments from any of the "enthusiasts".

... it's not a coupe either.

Seriously either bring a coupe (for some enthusiasts) or a wagon (for other enthusiasts). A four door with hatch is only marginally better than a four door sedan (the only two options).

Man where's HipToBeSquare when you need him. Or WRXHillclimb.

My Impreza is about to have its fourth oil pan replacement. I'm sitting at 125k miles. Not sure if new Impreza would be an upgrade or if it's time to venture elsewhere.

The STI is dead, and the WRX is as good as it will get...
Trimmed it for everyone to save you a click, just some BS "STI-line" accessories.

Are you not excited for that center exhaust screaming with the help of a 2.0NA hybrid CVT combo?

Honestly, toss the WRX drivetrain in there, add the hoodscoop, and sell it here. FFS Subaru!
