I would think the FWD bias of the Ascent is the advantage.

WRX CVT VTD = 19/25
Ascent CVT Active = 21/27

I don***8217;t think the WRX power is based on torque limits. It already has more power than the competition, so they don***8217;t need more. It***8217;s still the highest output of any WRX. Plus more would just get even worse MPG. Golf R isn***8217;t Subaru***8217;s benchmark. GTI/Si are.

And the Legacy XT has less power than the competition. I don't think that plays into anything at Subaru.

It's the 6MT. Subaru has made a hard stop at that torque for the non STI 6MT no matter what market and what powertrain. The diesel was also limited 258 lbs/ft torque with the 6MT.

If the drivetrains don't change, won't care

If they put in the 2.4 or 2.5 with the CVT, still won't care

If they put in the 2.4 or 2.5 with the manual, I might get one.

If they put in a regular hybrid, won't care.

If they put in a PHEV, probably get one in 2024 with the rebates.

If its a full EV, which I highly doubt, it will depend on the range but will be a maybe.

I think it will look quite OK.
But I also think the engine bay will be full of yawns

I think a sport trim with a 6 speed manual and FA24 with 220 hp or so would be really nice.

Subaru should hire you. I imagine you spent five minutes, tops, turning a crosstrek into an impreza, which means you could easily fix the WRX styling for them in half that time!

The real question though, will the rumored forthcoming 2.5/2.4RS or whatever they're going to call it gap the 2022 WRX, and by how much?

Who/where started rumors of this? The return of the Impreza RS? Was it the road and track article? Or just the fact that Bucky and Paris are introducing it?

Impreza RS FB25 CVT seems like a step backwards to me. And if it's a hatchback then it'll just be confusing.

Of course, Subaru has probably realized that they can do whatever they want. The WRX has cladding. Ford has mislabeled their EVs and the Maverick. Things just be crazy.

How so? Are Subaru buyers so stupid they are easily confused with their offerings?

Impreza 2.5 RS was a sedan/coupe. Making it a hatchback just adds confusion to the nostalgia. But I guess if the Acura Integra can be a lift back sedan despite being remembered as a coupe then anything is possible!

I mean it's as confusing as offering a tS when the GG was called the TS which was eventually called the 2.5RS again until they went with the 2.5i. So three names for the non turbo wagon in a single generation. Par the course for Subaru.

I'm curious to how many of this new car's(actual) customers would care about 20 year old nostalgia. What I'd like to see is a 3 engine option again. 2.0 for base. Option for a 2.0 or 2.5 in premium. 2.5 for Limited and then detuned 2.4 or tuned(or is it tooned?) up 2.5 for the Sport.

2024 Subaru Impreza de-t00ned.4 RS has a nice ring to it.

Also, 4S, you're right about the numerous name changes back in the day. It confused me because I had my 01 RS in 2006/2007 and knew nothing of Subarus then. My coworker had a GD RS, but I could tell it really wasn't anything special like my coupe (GM9 or whatever). 2.5i made more sense to me.

Not for nothing, but my '17 Impreza Sport handles 10x better than my '99 2.5RS did. Just doesn't have the same power/torque, but handling? I can take corners 5-10mph faster than I ever could in the RS, even with the right tires (and I have all weather Vredesteins on my Imp).

How do you like the Vredsteins? I see them a lot for winter tires. I'm just concerned with an Indian tire company who owns an old Dutch name.

Never heard of them until now. Looks like some interesting tread designs. I went with Michelin Cross Climate 2 A/S tires after Engineering Explained did a whole video review of them. I've been very satisfied with them. I had 17" tires on my 2011 WRX wheels that I used for a cross-country road trip last year, then I went down to one set of wheels and got 18" CC2s in Spring of this year.

They obviously don't have the aggressive grip as Continental Extreme Contact tires that I typically get for the summer, but I recently took them up to New Hampshire around Mt. Washington and White Mountain and they gripped very well. I think it's Bear Mountain Rd that has lots of twisties and blind corners. My buddy was following me in his GT-R and he was impressed with how composed the Impreza was. I'm also riding on BC Racing coilovers and they were set to maximum stiffness at that time.

Anyway, I'm somewhat interested in the new Impreza mostly because my current Impreza has over 120k miles and I'm pretty much spent on cross-continental road trips. So a proper Impreza RS hatchback with the FB25 would actually suit me just fine. If it comes with a manual I might consider it this time around, despite not being a big fan of Subaru manuals. Otherwise I'm content with my current Impreza. It's quirky and manageable. And, most importantly, it's been paid off.
