Snow prep
Hey guys,
I'm thinking about taking my 93 gf8 wagon up to Tahoe cuz I'm tired of asking for rides and waiting others schedules to clear up. Right now my setup is just stock fwd manual transmission. Are there any mods you guys would recommend me getting other than snow tires and chains? Or should I be fine, I've only driven my buddies Ford Escape.

With proper tires, you'll be fine. The only thing I add to that is to assume that the car is going to die in the middle of nowhere. If you're heading up to ski, you likely have the clothing in the car to be able to be there long enough to not die.

along with a decent ice scraper and snow tires, i mounted a snow/recovery shovel inside my trunk lid for obvious reasons. i got stuck in really deep snow last year while playing around due to being lowered. luckily my buddy with his jeep pulled me out. also, my parking spot in my complex gets snowed in, so i needed something to clear it out with. $20 on amazon, well worth it.

Already been said, but bring a survival kit in the event you get stranded. This includes water and non-perishable food. All the other suggestions are good, too, such as a shovel, sleeping bag, and don't forget some kitty litter if you find yourself stuck and needing traction.
Obviously make sure your car is in good running condition. This includes all fluids being topped off, wipers in good condition, and a full tank of gas. Common sense goes a long way. |

I go one step further with the "survival kit" and bring along some camping cookware and a butane stove, and some packets of oatmeal and hot cocoa. Best case scenario, you can have a warm meal and cocoa for less than the $22 you'd pay at the lodge. Worst case, you can melt snow/boil water, and have some warm food to get through the night.
I also bring along an ATV whip flag in the event that I get stranded when it's dumping snow. If need be, I'll zip tie it to my roof rack or antenna so I don't get mowed over by a plow. As far as the car, get some good deicer spray (prestone), fill your washer reservoir with good deicer/windshield wash, and remember to lift your wiper blades and keep your parking brake off. |

If you stay with the car (which you generally should), warmth and fat calories are #1 and #2, pretty much everything else is optional if you have those met. Lack of either of those in a winter survival situation in a car will kill you. Snow is your water, and shivering will keep you warm, if you have some decent clothes. (hence the fat calories, shivering burns LOTS of calories!) |

Jumper cables and a tow strap. If you get stuck/stranded or you battery dies, these will help. Without them, another car (passer by) is useless except for a ride.

Overkill.. eh, maybe. The sleeping bag and ramen are from when I used to stay over in college at friends houses since I drove. I added tools and stuff later to accommodate it being a bag for the car. |

The Mayan calendar is cyclic, and doesn't end dec21 that is a myth, it is simply the beginning of a new cycle. I wish people would stop claiming the Mayans predicted the end of days when it was BS pop culture that did!!!
I carry a minimal kit in the car, one of those safety/warm blankets, matches w/paper, couple of powerbars and basic first aid kit. Definitely no water until spring depending on where you live(unless you just put it in at the beginning of a trip), you'd be better off melting snow than trying to melt a solid block of ice! |
