Cool Hot off the press. More news about Subaru in the US

I just got this off of a news site. Read it and think what you will. It verifies the new STi Impreza for the US......

Subaru Aims for Boost in United States
August 23, 2000 2:58 am EST

TOKYO (Reuters) - Subaru, the auto division of Japan''s Fuji Heavy Industries Co., unveiled new versions of its Impreza wagon and sedan that it hopes will boost its presence in the United States.
"Sales in the U.S. have been strong and we expect the new Impreza, to be launched there early next year, to give us further momentum," Takeshi Tanaka, president of the niche maker of four-wheel drive vehicles, told reporters.

U.S. sales for Fuji Heavy, 20 percent owned by auto giant General Motors Corp., have risen 15 percent for the year to date to more than 98,000 vehicles, compared with an industry average of a five percent increase.

Tanaka was not too concerned the white-hot pace of U.S. auto sales was showing signs of cooling, saying he still expected annual industry-wide sales close to last-year''s record 16.9 million vehicles, while most of the fall-off was seen in the minivan and light-truck segments.

"We have less than one percent of the U.S. market and lots of room to grow," he said.

Fuji Heavy executives were less confident, however, of a strong recovery in the Japanese market.

Although robust numbers in May and June had fueled hopes of a healthy pick-up, they said figures for July and August had failed to meet expectations.

"There will be some recovery in sales because manufacturers are launching many new vehicles but it will still be a tough market," said Fukuji Inada, head of Subaru''s domestic division.

Subaru expects to sell 3,000 Imprezas -- 2,200 sports wagons and 800 sedans -- per month in Japan. Prices will range from 1.36 million to 2.58 million yen ($12,550-$23,820).

Sales are expected to receive a boost to between 3,000 and 4,000 units per month when the Impreza series is rounded out in October with the STI sedan -- which will more closely resemble the vehicle used in world rally championships.

Fuji Heavy''s shares were up slightly by seven yen at 747 in Wednesday afternoon trade.

I don't see where the article says the Sti will come to the US, it just says that the Impreza line will be "rounded out in October with the STI sedan". I think that means for the JDM, since the car won't be in the US in October. It could happen later, though.

I think that they mean that the STi will be released in Japan at this time.....but I hope that I am wrong.

It says sales of 3,000 per month in Japan with a boost to 3,000 - 4,000 with the STI in October, clearly they're referring to the Japan sales only.

IMHO, this helps explain why the new Impreza looks best in wagon form. I bet it was designed primarily as a wagon, since they sell nearly three wagons for every sedan in the JDM.
