Tire choice for Redline Time Attack, street class
Just wondering what people are running for the street class in the time attacks. The rules, I belive, are that tires must have tread rating of 140 or greater - this eliminates most or all R compounds, no?
I was planning to just run with my hankook RS2 street tires. I wonder if something like the stock sti re70s would be a better track tire (in the dry).

Neova's, RE-01R's or rt-615's...
the 615's are the cheapest and you'll need to make sure you are on the ball and all warmed up as they may not last 3 laps at 10/10's. They dont have the grip that the Neova's do but they are 1/2 the price. Edit: hope to see you at the event, I hope to be driving my friends m3 that weekend |

I like the Neovas, they are very progressive at the limit. I've only run on the Bridgestones once and it wasn't for long.
I wouldn't do the RT-615s for the track, you need atleast one lap just to bring everything up to temp and I can fry the 615s in that one lap. |

RE-01R'S Ftw. Neova's are also a great tire, but not worth the extra cost in my opinion. 615's are better for autox, the loose grip quickly on a road course.

Cool, thanks guys.
I'll be at the St. Eustache event (just outside of Montreal) June 2/3. I already have my RS2s for street tires - debating between using those and these: - one friend has an old set of 16" azenis with not a lot of tread left that he can give me - another friend has a used set of RE70s to give me, decent tread left. Trying to decide which is the fastest. Definitely not buying tires for this one event... I already have mulitple sets of RA1s for the track solosprint events here, and V710s for auto-x. This is the only race event I'll do on street tires, and being competetive is always the goal, but for this one, not at the expense of yet another set of tires. Going to this one more for the fun and the experience. I'd love to just run my RA1s, but you can't in street class, and my car is definitley not prepped for any of the higher classes! I probably have my best chances in street. Either way I am fully expecting to get thoroughly spanked by lots of people, especially the big teams who come down with full out trailered race cars. Should be a blast though! |

Im going to St-eustache too for the redlinetime attack but my car is not ready, so I'll watch the show. At St-eustache I prefer my re070 over my rs2.

For those who want the RE01s remember B'stone has a special on them (if you have SCCA/BMWCCA/etc membership). Check out http://potenza.com. You have until Jul 31 I believe...
Have fun at the event! |

I'll second the re070's. They are a great tire they handle the heat pretty well (way better than the 615's) and have a better sidewall than....well almost any tire. The only thing holding them back is the limited size. That being said I've autocrossed and had track days on both 245 series rt-615's and the re070's back to back and would take the re070's for either anyday.

I am thinking RE70s as well. The free azenis are 16" and old, and I have been on the track with Azenis before and they get greasy real fast... kind of scary after a bunch of hot laps.
I have to see the re70s that my buddy offered me - he said two were pretty good and two were not so great, but on the rear should hold up for the time attack at least. Maybe I will use the RS2s for a bit the first day to learn the track, etc. and put the re70s on for some practice saturday, then for the day sunday. Will be good to have the RS2s there in case there is rain! Awesome rain tire! |

Update:
well, I ran my RS2s... in the end it came down to not having any time to pick up a set of tires from one guy, a set of rims from another, get them mounted, etc. Figured I would just run on my daily driver tires. Man - I was really impressed with the RS2s! Not the best street track tire around, but they really held their own, and delivered quite well for a inexpensive tire. Of course, I just took a whole summer of use off them in one weekend... I ended up 3rd in AWD street, and the two guys ahead of me (Robbispec evo, and STi from quebec city) were both on the RE-01s. Glad I didn't run my RA1s in modified, as the ONLY AWD modified car was the same Robbispec Evo, and he kicked my butt. I'd rather finish 3rd in a populated class than 2nd in a class of 2 cars. Anyway, thanks for the advice and comments guys! |
