Dyno/Exhaust Clip/Track Video

My original thread had stage 2 in the title that I couldn't change and had gotten pretty messy...so I thought I would start a clean one up to show the progress and keep from getting the same questions over and over again since the information was so hard to find in the thread...

This was a long road. We found out earlier in 2011 that we are pregnant so I was looking to drop the '07 Avalanche I was driving. With 2 Boxers and a kid...it was going to be a PITA and I was itching for something fast again anyway. When I settled on the WRX (thanks to Subaru giving the 2011's the STi body/width treatment), I had a hell of a time finding one and they were no longer taking orders.

Luckily, by pure chance, I stumbled upon almost exactly what I was looking for at a local dealer before they had a chance to list it on their website.

I get asked a lot why I went with the WRX over the STI...well this is why...

Quote:
Yeah it wasn't a money thing for me on which car I could afford. I traded in a car that was a lot more expensive to get this one. I wanted a four door car that could carry the son I had on the way, take me mountain biking and had all wheel drive. It was between the WRX, STI and EVO. I opened the trunk to the EVO and that got x'ed right away. The hatch Subaru is awesome for function that can still be tracked.

I actually made a spreadsheet on what each car had...the differences...and my plans on replacement aftermarket parts (which includes a new short block too by the way). I couldn't justify paying the 8 to 10 grand difference for just a 6 speed and differentials. Yes...you can get a base sedan for low 30's but you can not get the hatch with the options I wanted at that price so it was a true 8 to 10 thousand dollar difference for a lot of parts I would be taking off anyway.

So I instead put that money towards building the car I really wanted. The only PITA was the wheels...so custom drilled Works were the biggest headache but it all worked out.

Besides...there is nothing wrong with rocking a rear WRX badge and ignorant people thinking it is so much slower than a STI.

Kartboy STS

RaceComp Engineering adjustable front and rear sway bars installed. Set to the softer setting on both F&R for now.

Front (forgot to take a picture before I put everything back together)

Rear

JPM Coachworks (http://www.jpmcoachworks.com/jpm/) did an incredible job on the shift boot. I went with the leather with red stitching to match the rest of the interior of the car. The leather is incredible...actually makes me want to recover the rest and cover some of the plastic pieces throughout the car.

I added a Momo/Subaru shift knob at the same time to replace the stock one.

The Hertz HSK 165XL 6.5" components went in this week. Ryan at SladeAudio.com did the install and fiberglass work on the pillars to get the front sound stage forward some. The pillars came out even better than I had imagined.

A DLS RA30 is under the drivers seat to throw power to the components. It will be replaced with a twice as powerful Hertz HDP4 once it comes in.

Still waiting on my Dayton 10" and the Audio Integrations hatch box to round out the system...should all be here by next Monday.

Everything from a birds eye view.

The Pillar setup

The e-brake boot now matches the shift boot thanks to Alex at JPMCoachworks.com.

Thanks to Cicio and the guys at TopSpeed in Alpharetta, GA...I have a new part bolted up to the WRX today.

Stage 2 custom tune by Doug will be coming soon. For now it is the OTS Cobb map.

The Dynamat project has continued. The front doors are getting sealed today and the trunk is almost done.

Went ahead and decided to add the STI lip.

No more "Altezza Style" tail lights.

I went back and forth on whether or not to do this for a long time. I am pretty glad I did.

Some pictures from The Dragon this week. Sway bars are a must have for every WRX.

Photos shot by Killboy.com and then edited by me.

With cars, I have always believed that the addition of little changes that no one notices are what really make the difference. Simple de-badging...making items look like the should already be there (stock) but aren't...all of them add to the experience of the car without the onlooker even knowing the difference unless they had them side by side. This next mod was just another step in that direction.

JDM radio bezel.

New amp came in yesterday thanks to Ryan at SladeAudio.com and I had the chance to install it this morning.

The Hertz HDP 4 is running 150x2 at 4ohm to the front stage and 460x1 bridged at 4ohm to the sub. This is up from 70x2 and 265x1 that the DLS RA30 was putting out on a much smaller footprint thanks to the class D.

Hertz on the DLS as a size comparison

Installed the Whiteline Steering Rack Bushing kit yesterday.

Installation was pretty straight forward and easy to do on ramps. The provided Whiteline tool to remove the driver's side bushings made things much easier. I didn't end up taking any before and after pictures of the install due to trying not to melt in my garage in 95 degree Atlanta heat...but there isn't much to see any way as the only visual difference is the bushings changing from black to yellow.

When you hold the old vs. new in your hand, you can see why a lot of people do this mod. The original black rubber bushings allow for a lot of play in the steering rack under load. The new yellow bushings from Whiteline are much harder and they restrict that play.

How does it drive now?

It wasn't a "holy s#$t! This is awesome!" experience. I noticed better feel on turn in and less play in the steering wheel overall. The car only has 10,000 miles on it so I would suspect that cars with more wear and tear would feel a bigger benefit. This is part of an install that I am doing in conjunction with an Anti Lift Kit from Whiteline, so I was going for an overall effect that will be complete once that install is done.

I am glad I took the time to install these as I can see the stock bushings were only going to get worse with time. They also improved the steering feel of an otherwise really numb feeling that is known in Subaru's.

Every now and then...you get a project that once you are finished...you are glad you never have to go through that again.

Last night, a friend of mine and I installed the ALK. Getting the factory bushings out was a huge pain in the ass. They were really in there and after heat, a 600 ft/lb impact and multiple configurations on a bushing kit...they finally came loose.

The ALK adds .5 positive degrees of caster and put the forces of driving back on the suspension and out of the flexible rubber stock bushing. It also helps turn in and other steering characteristics.

I haven't gotten a chance to really throw the car around, but these along with the steering rack bushings is starting to bring the steering of the car to where it should have been.

This won't be for everyone...but I like it.

I have never really liked the light silver in the interior of the WRX. It doesn't seem to flow with the rest of the dark interior and it scratches incredibly easy. So...I started looking into ways I could paint or cover it to change things up a little bit.

I ended up using the 1080 Scotchptint carbon vinyl from 3M. It is easier to work with than Di-Noc and the finish looks better in my opinion. I just did the JDM radio bezel and center console. I'll probably start there as I don't want to over do it...

Made some progress at the dyno today at TopSpeed. (DynoJet Dyno)

Stance on the new suspension.

Keep in mind...how low my car was with this modification was a distant worry. The was a performance first mod that is paying huge dividends already. Ideally, I actually didn't want the car to come down much at all as I use it for mountain biking and a slammed car would cause issues in that area. According to RCE, the car comes down 15mm with this setup from stock. I am assuming the springs need to settle a little bit so this is the highest it will be. I can also adjust the rear down some more if I want to as it is in the middle height position.

No more weenie Subaru horn. Stealth Hella's

I got a killer deal on some Whiteline KBR Rear Braces (FREE!). Painted them to match my RCE Sways. We'll see if they actually make a difference or not...

Daniel and I went on our first solo trip yesterday. Car seat fits perfectly and he loves the sound of the exhaust. Didn't make a peep the entire trip. I have a really cool new co-driver.

It was time for a brake upgrade and I came across a deal I just couldn't pass up...they just needed some work.

Front and rears came in looking like this...

Rotors were drilled and blue...so I painted them black.

Stripped...

Primed...

Ready to go on...

Installed...

Now I just have to bleed and take daylight pictures. Rears will be done as soon as I get the brackets from KNS Brakes.

Some proper pictures now that the car is clean and out of the driveway.

Roof rack is off for now until my back heals so I can get back on the bike and the rears will be on and matching within a week or so.

Installed one of the Sparco Milano's today. The blackish gray Alcantara looks pretty good, but the other seat is off at JPM Coachworks to get some custom work done. Once that seat is done...we'll do this one as well, so this look is temporary.

I have gotten some questions on how I did the calipers...so I thought I would post what I used here.

Stripped the old paint of with this --> http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web...ntent=10711125

Painted with this --> http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web...ntent=10711125

Clear coated with this --> http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web...ntent=10711125

Then wet sanded and waxed.

Front and rear Kartboy endlinks are on.

I took it for a spirited drive after the install to set everything in. It appears the sways are able to do their job better over the the stock end links. Feels great so far.

GReddy SP Elite Catback is installed!

Before with the SPT...

After with the GReddy

I wanted something that was a little quieter and had larger tips/tubing. The power mods are starting to go on in the next couple of weeks so I wanted to make sure everything was as free flowing as possible.

I got A LOT of compliments on how the SPT exhaust sounded. It was just a little bit too loud for my tastes and the tips didn't really fill up the bumper gaps like I wanted. The GReddy fits up perfectly to my tastes.

Rears are complete. Big thanks to Ken at KNS brakes for making the brackets, supplying the rear rotors and putting up with my constant asking about the brackets progress.

The brackets work PERFECTLY. A little bit of grinding off the knuckle and they bolt right up.

My original teaser picture showed drilled rotors. For one...those didn't work because there is a depth difference in the e-brake between 07-08 which makes the rotors completely lock up when you torque down the wheel. This was ok with me as I wanted to switch to slotted from drilled anyway, so Ken sent over a set of 08+ STI DBA 4000 STI rotors drilled for 5x100. Everything mounted up nicely...

Once the everything was bled, caliper was waxed and the wheel was torqued down...I went for a drive and everything performed flawlessly. The car is insanely dirty from a lot of driving this week...but here is how they look behind my Works (still waiting on my center caps).

Now I just have to get slotted rings for my fronts to get rid of the drilled rotors I hate and everything will be matched up. It's nice to finally have the rears on.

The fronts for reference...

Played at AllPro Subaru in Alpharetta, GA...

Low boost map until the EBCS is installed. Only hitting around 16 pounds right now. Tune by Doug at TopSpeed Motorsports.

Wideband is in.

There have been some questions on whether or not the factory fog lights will work with the Perrin FMIC. As you can see from the picture...they fit perfectly. The passenger side fog does fit but has been removed to decrease intake temps. I need to find a sponge or something to put behind it to keep water out...but so far it is doing the trick.

Got a completely new camera kit this week along with all the part for my rig setup. I just had to test it out in my neighborhood pool parking lot. Everyone was looking at me with crazy eyes as I had a 14 foot aluminum pole hanging off my car.

Today was a good day to say the least. Final 93 pump tune is on the car and it is pretty strong. Doug at TopSpeed Motorsports did work.

All of the parts were sourced by TopSpeed and then I did the work with the guys at AllPro. It was basically all of the power mods minus the downpipe and exhaust.

We removed the secondary air pump. It won't fit with the new turbo.

Question

Wow, first off congrats! That is one cool car.
Any estimate as to how much you have spent total to get it to that point?
Any reliability issues running all those power upgrades for a DD?
Thanks again for sharing!

I don't want to add it up. But it isn't cheap. I shop for parts really well and do a lot of the work myself. That helps.
None so far. The tune is really safe on purpose since I am on a stock bottom end right now.
