Somebody said ,in the Rumor thread, that the previous gen. 5speed short throw shifter fits the new Imprezas.

The shifter assembly appears to be unchanged from the '11 impreza. Installed Kartboy short shifter on my '12.

Oh yeah and in case any one is wondering, the e-brake boot is the same as the '11 also. Installed a JPM Coachworks alcantara e-brake boot. Still waiting on the matching alcantara shift boot but I'd be astonished if it didn't fit.

Hey all--just joined up.
@ rwilner: I'm w you, brother. One must-have mod for my 2012 Impreza Sport was a good short-shifter. The stock is decent but throws too long for my taste. Like SubuImpreza12, I installed Kartboy short-shifter for WRX 08-12/Legacy 06-09 (lever only, stuck with OEM bushings) a few days ago w friend's help (thx, DCY). Works very well--slick. @ Diskreet: shift knob threads same fit as WRX & last-gen Legacy, too. Adds a lot to the car given that I feel I have to shift a lot more to get as much out of the 2.0 litre engine as I did out of my 2.5 litre Legacy. Overall MUCH better than stock--shorter throw, stick about 3/4" to 1" lower. Increased resistance noticeable but not intrusive--makes sense given the physics of a shorter torque-lever. Install note: If doing yourself, the install is very similar (almost indentical) to 2008-2011 WRX install (check YouTube for "How to install Short Shifter for 09 WRX") with one critical difference. The release bolts for the center console are NOT inside the rear compartment--they are on the OUTSIDE of the console toward the rear under plastic caps with small indents for removal. If you kneel down with back doors open & front seats slid forward, you will see them. Also of note, there was a lot of additional padding around the rubber shifter boot in the 2012 Impreza when compared to the 09 WRX in the video. I'm not sure what it's for (soundproofing? vibration?) but it lifts out easily with the rubber boot. Happy shifting & hope that helps! --Rave PS--with thanks to Tom from Kartboy, who seems very dedicated to his craft & told me that the shifter would work. And boy does it. One thing to take note of, you do not, at this moment, have a WRX or STI model that shares your body style. This is going to slow things down a bit because the aftermarket is really driven but the WRX owners. Outside NASIOC, the vast majority of NA Subaru owners will never mod their car or have any interest in doing it. Are you SOL? Kinda, but maybe not, it's going to take some work though. If you are new to Subarus, they are kinda like legos. Subaru economizes by sharing a lot of parts between models. You have an all new body and engine, so you probably won't find too much there, but you may find some similarities ( like the SS kits, as noted above). That said, I think that you are still on the same platform as the 08-11 Imprezas, (and the 05-09 Legacies) so there are probably a lot of places where you can swap in parts from other Subies. Get an 2012 OEM parts catalog and start comparing the part numbers to other Subarus. Find some pics of the underside of the ealier cars and then get under your car and see if it looks the same. I'll bet that your brakes will swap with others give the right mounting plates, and probably some suspension parts too. Once you find similarities with OEM parts, the connection to aftermarket parts from other models is easy. It's a tedious process but your alternative is to sit around and wait for the aftermarket companies to catch up to you. Without the turbo models to drive the market, you could be waiting a long time. Heck, even the 08 WRX sedans had a hard time finding parts early on because the 08 STI was a hatch, so the STI market wasn't driving parts development for sedans. |

The engagement is quicker, the shifting precise, the throws about 1/3 shorter, and the stick about 3/4" to 1" lower in height. I have heard the bushings firm-up the system even more, but I'm pretty happy w the stockers so far. I suspect it's a taste thing. If you replace the bushings & really like it, please post again & let me know how it went! |

This is true, I ordered my 2012 WRX monday morning and a dealer-installed option is a short-throw shifter kit.
If I remember it was a rather pricey option, especially with dealer installation fees. I may or may not purchase it down the road and install it myself. (Also, first post, what up guys ) |

Haven't ordered parts yet (nobody know if they fit). My biggest concern for the bushing is, with the stock shifter, is the play of the shifter itself. I have a big 1/2 play in all direction when engaged in gears. I want to eliminated/reduce that. Is it what you guys call "crisp" or "precise"

Anyone know if cruise control can be added either aftermarket or OEM on the 2012? I used to install Rostra aftermarket kits back years ago but have been out of the business for a while. Figured I would come here and ask those that have done so...
We'll I found my answer I guess - Rostra makes one not shown in their current catalog but it won't work with my manual transmission. I guess time will tell if there comes a solution... Last edited by Oceanguy; 02-28-2012 at 04:36 PM. Reason: found 250-1875 part number |

I'd love to see some wheel specs as far as fitment, particularly for 18" wheels. I love SWP, but don't love the Sport wheels on it.

Ya I'd love some fogs. Are the stock ones bad? I was contemplating installing them myself if I did them for the right price.
